Nicholas Curson [1] [2] [3] (born 1973 [4] [5] [6] ) is an American strength and conditioning coach (S&C coach), [7] [8] [9] founder of Speed Of Sport gym in Torrance, California. [10] Curson has been involved with various S&C training modalities since the mid-1990s, [4] [5] [11] as a Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) practitioner, competitor and instructor. [3] [12] Since late 2009, [5] he has specialized in Eastern Bloc influenced Marinovich Training Systems and works closely with Russian–born neuroscientist and neurophysiologist Dr. Igor Lavrov of the S.M. Kirov Military Medical Academy and currently a Mayo Clinic principal researcher. [4] [13] [14] Curson describes himself as a sports performance specialist, since he is not credentialed with a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) certificate. [15] [16]

Professional background

Curson started training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) in 1995, for the first four years under Rickson Gracie, [3] [12] and gained his blue belt. [6] He received his black belt in 2007 and his 1st degree in 2010, both under Rigan Machado. [3] [12]

In 2008 he founded Unity Jiu Jitsu (UJJ) Academy in Redondo Beach, California and was teaching BJJ. [12] [16] Some of his students have gone on to win medals in BJJ World, [17] Pan-American [18] and US National championships [19] [20] as well as other tournaments. [3]

Curson has been involved with various S&C training modalities as a BJJ practitioner and instructor. [4] [5] [11] Examples include classic weight training, kettlebells, and crossfit. [6] [21]

While taking on the role of a training partner for MMA fighter B.J. Penn in preparation for Penn's December 12, 2009 UFC lightweight championship fight on UFC 107, Curson got exposed to the Marinovich-based Neuromuscular Intensification System (NIS) training program and became "hooked" and a "believer". [5] [12] [21] [22] Penn's S&C program under head trainer Marv Marinovich was at Gavin MacMillan's Sport Science Lab (SSL) in San Juan Capistrano, California. [22] [23] [24] In March 2010, Curson started the SSL Affiliate Program [25] [26] and proceeded to get certified in most of the Neuromuscular Intensification System various elements. [21] [27] [28] becoming a certified NIS personal trainer. [12] [29] [30]

Curson started offering the NIS S&C program at Unity Jiu Jitsu Academy. [29] [31] From mid-2011 Curson gradually shifted from BJJ instructor + S&C trainer, to S&C inclusive trainer. [6] [32] By March 2012 Unity Jiu Jitsu Academy was permanently closed. [33] [34] Curson instead founded Speed Of Sport Gym at the same location, [35] later moving the gym to Torrance, California. [10]

Speed Of Sport is not affiliated with MacMillan and Sport Science Lab . Curson is a protégé of the brothers Marv and Gary Marinovich (Marinovich Training Systems [36] ), [3] [9] [37] who, since late 2011, were training out of Integrated Martial Sciences Academy (IMS Academy) in Live Oak, Santa Cruz County, California and sometimes at Noble-Moreno Boxing Gym in Watsonville, California. Training method

Curson consults with physiologists and sports biomechanics experts in formulating a conditioning program for his athletes. [4] [13]

His training techniques are based on plyometrics and ballistic modalities with a physioball modification. [9] [40] [41] He works on speed, flexibility and stamina. [42] He employs fast-twitch muscle training in the swimming pool, [43] downhill sprinting, [6] hypoxic altitude simulation, [6] [44] motor coordination and kinesthetic awareness exercises. [45] Significant attention is given to foot strengthening exercises. [6] [40]

On The Joe Rogan Experience podcast he explained how he's against traditional squats, bench press, deadlift, etc., against slow resistance training, and against the use of kettlebells for explosive sports like MMA and boxing. [6] [40] Curson has stated: "Weight training with heavy loads has been scientifically proven to be detrimental to boxers' speed, force, and accuracy", [5] and in reference to elite level athletes, "Lift heavy and YOU WILL lose efficiency, economy of movement…guaranteed". [46] Kickboxer Joe Schilling stated that Curson's exercises were hard and difficult, but didn't break him down like other S&C systems, noting the emphasis in Curson's system of not overtraining. [47]

Curson opposes the use of performance–enhancing drugs (PEDs), stating his clients only take multivitamins and nutrients from natural food. [5]

Edgar Bravo is an American martial arts instructor, podcaster, stand-up comedian, and musician. After earning a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2003, Bravo began teaching his own self-developed style of jiu-jitsu and founded 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu. He is also the creator of the Eddie Bravo Invitational (EBI) grappling competition and the EBI ruleset. He is a recurring guest on The Joe Rogan Experience and the Tin Foil Hat Podcast.

Matt Serra is an American former professional mixed martial artist and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner who competed for the Ultimate Fighting Championship. He is the co-star of Dana White: Lookin' for a Fight and co-host of the official podcast of the UFC, UFC Unfiltered, alongside Jim Norton. Serra defeated Pete Spratt, Shonie Carter and Chris Lytle en route to becoming The Ultimate Fighter 4 Welterweight Tournament Winner. He captured the UFC Welterweight Championship immediately after. Serra also served as the head coach for The Ultimate Fighter 6 reality show opposite Matt Hughes, and he is a member of the UFC Hall of Fame. In grappling, Serra holds a Silver Medal in the ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship.

Ralph Gracie is a retired Brazilian professional mixed martial artist and jiu-jitsu black belt. A member of the famed Gracie family, he is the son of Robson Gracie and the brother of 11 Gracies, including Charles Gracie, Renzo Gracie and the late Ryan Gracie.

Mario Yamasaki is a Brazilian mixed martial arts referee licensed in many states, most recognizable from his duties with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), as well as founder and chief instructor of the International Yamasaki Academy. Yamasaki is a veteran of over 400 fights in the UFC, Strikeforce, WEC, EliteXC and Pride Fighting Championships.

Having won multiple World Championships, he was referred to by Vice magazine as "America's jiu-jitsu superhero", regarded by BJJ Heroes as "the most accomplished American grappler of his generation" and as the best Submission Wrestler in the World by Gracie Magazine.

Braulio de Oliveira Estima is a 4th degree black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. He received his black belt from Carlos Gracie Jr. on January 4, 2004. Throughout his grappling career, he has won in many Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournaments across the world, such as the Mundials, ADCC, Pan American Championship, and European Championship. His long list of accomplishments has made him well respected among other Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners, such that some consider him one of the top Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners in the world and one of the head coaches for Gracie Barra U.K.

Rafael Souza dos Anjos is a Brazilian and American professional mixed martial artist. He currently competes in the Welterweight and Lightweight divisions in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). A professional competitor since 2004, he is a former UFC Lightweight Champion. As of December 5, 2023, he is #11 in the UFC lightweight rankings.

Marvin Jack Marinovich was an American college and professional football player who became a strength and conditioning coach. He played college football as a two-way lineman for the USC Trojans and was captain of their national championship team in 1962. He played professionally as an offensive guard for the Oakland Raiders of the National Football League (NFL). He was later the founder of Marinovich Training Systems.

Jason Parillo is an American Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) coach at the RVCA Training Centre and former professional boxer. He is best known for training multiple MMA world champions.

Serra-Longo Fight Team is a mixed martial arts team based on Long Island, New York that was formed by Matt Serra and Ray Longo. The team has two gyms operating under it, Serra BJJ Academy and Longo-Weidman MMA.
