The Open Theatre of Tirana is an open-air theatre within the Grand Park of Tirana, Albania. The theatre is called an "amphitheatre" by locals, mainly because it is in the open, and also because of its almost semi-circular form, which recalls the typical shapes of the Roman theatres (although not amphitheatres). [1]
In 1973, architect-engineer Temo Vito projected the theatre within the Grand Park of Tirana. He did so taking into consideration the green park around the area. The main problem were some century-old olive trees, which, according to local beliefs could not be cut. This was circumvented by transferring those olive trees in a nearby area, work that was conducted under the supervision of agronomist Abedin Çiço. Construction of the theatre was performed by the government-owned company "21 dhjetori", and the theatre was inaugurated in spring 1974. It has a stage, the podium, dressing rooms for the artists and a technical room for projectors, and can be used as a concert stage, as well as a movie theatre. [2]
After the 1990s the summer theatre was abandoned and the seats were almost fully ruined by the elements. The town hall of Tirana started the rehabilitation in the fall of 2017 and on 30 May 2018 the theatre re-opened, with a night concert given by the Albanian Armed Forces band, the orchestra of the Radio Televizioni Shqiptar, led by Noorman Widjaja, violinist Olen Cesari, and the school of ballet students, for a total number of 400 artists participating in the event. [3] [4] The spectacle was followed by another concert, two days later, by the Greek singer, George Dalaras. [5]
Tirana is the capital and largest city of Albania. It is located in the centre of the country, enclosed by mountains and hills with Dajti rising to the east and a slight valley to the northwest overlooking the Adriatic Sea in the distance. Due to its location at the Plain of Tirana and the close proximity to the Mediterranean Sea, the city is particularly influenced by a Mediterranean seasonal climate. It is among the wettest and sunniest cities in Europe, with 2,544 hours of sun per year.
Klubi i Futbollit Tirana is an Albanian professional football club based in the country's capital city, Tirana. The men's football club is part of the multi-disciplinary sports club SK Tirana, and is the most successful in Albania, having won 54 recognized major domestic trophies. They are the only football club in Albania with two stars in their crest after winning the 20th championship in 2003, each star corresponds to ten championships. Making them the first and only Albanian club to have achieved such a feat. They play their home games at the Selman Stërmasi Stadium in Tirana and they play in the Kategoria Superiore.
The Mat is a river in north-central Albania. Its overall length is 115 km (71 mi), while its catchment surface is 2,441 km2 (942 sq mi). Its average discharge is 103 m3/s (3,600 cu ft/s). The main tributary is Fan, flowing from the northeast, while the Mat flows from the southwest down to the confluence with Fan and then towards the Adriatic Sea.
The National Theatre of Albania was the main theatre in Tirana, Albania. In March 2020, the National Theatre of Albania was selected by Europa Nostra among the 7 most endangered monuments in Europe, as an exceptional example of modern Italian architecture from the 1930s and one of the most prominent cultural centers in Albania, facing impending threat of demolition. On 17 May 2020, the National Theatre building was demolished.
Saint Procopius Church of Tirana is an Orthodox church on the outskirts of Tirana, Albania. It was one of only two Orthodox churches that existed in the city before World War II, the other one being the 19th-century Evangelismos Church, which was demolished in 1967.
