Punchi Banda Aloysius Weerakoon (1 January 1900 - 22 March 1988) was a Ceylonese educator and politician. [1]
Aloysius Weerakoon was born on 1 January 1900 the son of S. Weerakoon of Nattarampota. [2] His father died when he was ten and his family moved to Ampitiya,where he was enrolled in an English missionary school. Weerakoon excelled at mathematics and when he turned eighteen,he was invited by the priests to conduct English and mathematics classes for the younger children at the school. In 1919 he entered the Government Teachers Training College in Colombo and graduated as a teacher. [2]
In 1925 he joined the staff at St. Anthony's College,Kandy,where he later became the headmaster of the primary school section. [2]
Weerakoon married Charlotte née Wijesinghe in 1936.
He entered politics in 1943,when he was elected as the representative for the Mawilmada Municipal Ward on the Kandy Municipal Council. [2] He served on the council for thirteen years,during which time he was also elected as the Deputy Mayor of Kandy. [2]
In 1956,he was invited by S. W. R. D. Bandaranaike to contest the seat of Wattegama,on behalf of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party,as part of Bandaranaike's MEP-SLFP coalition. Weerakoon defeated the sitting member,Abeyratne Ratnayaka,by 3,548 votes and was duly appointed as a Member of Parliament. [3]
He was appointed the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Education,Wijeyananda Dahanayake,as part of the S. W. R. D. Bandaranaike cabinet. Following the assassination of Bandaranayke in 1959,which led to Dr. Dahanayake being appointed the caretaker Prime Minister,Dahanayake entrusted Weerakoon with the additional role of Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Defence,as part of his cabinet.
He was re-elected at the 4th parliamentary election,held on 19 March 1960,where he polled 8,680 votes (53% of the total vote). [4] He was expelled from the Sri Lanka Freedom Party,after expressing his views that it should join the United National Party,and subsequently switched political allegiances moving to the United National Party. [2] [5] At the 5th parliamentary election,held on 20 July 1960,he contested the seat of Kundasale on behalf of the United National Party. He failed to defeat the sitting member from the Sri Lanka Freedom Party,U. P. Y. Jinadasa,losing the election by 1,586 votes. [6]
At the 6th parliamentary election,held on 22 March 1965,he returned to the seat of Wattegama,this time as the United National Party candidate,after the sitting member,Abeyratne Ratnayaka,agreed to be appointed to the Senate of Ceylon. Weerakoon received 12,373 votes (56% of the total vote),defeating the Sri Lanka Freedom Party candidate,A. G. Fernando,by 2,912 votes. [7] In his time in parliament he was responsible for setting up an Industrial Estate and Textile Factory in Pallekele. [2]
At the 7th parliamentary election,held on 27 May 1970,he was unable to retain his seat,losing to Fernando by 1,972 votes. [8]
Weerakoon died on 22 May 1988. [2] Weerakoon Gardens and P. B. A. Weerakoon Mawatha in Kandy are named in recognition of his services.

Navaratne Rajakaruna Wasala Mudiyanselage Tikiri Bandara Ilangaratne,popularly as T. B. Ilangaratne,was a Sri Lankan politician,author,dramatist,and theater actor. Ratnayake Wasala Mudiyanselage Abeyratne Ratnayaka was a Sri Lankan politician. He was the first Cabinet Minister of Food,Co-operatives;Minister of Home Affairs in independent Ceylon and the last President of the Senate of Ceylon.

Punchi Banda Gunathilleke Kalugalla was a Sri Lankan politician,Cabinet Minister and diplomat. He contested the 1956 election as a Sri Lanka Freedom Party candidate for Kegalle electorate,won and was appointed as a Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health by S. W. R. D. Bandaranaike. In June 1959 he was appointed as Minister of Cultural Affairs &Social Services,and held that portfolio under W. Dahanayake. Having held his seat in the 1960 parliamentary elections,he was appointed Minister of Transport &Works by Sirimavo Bandaranaike. In November 1962 he was appointed as Minister of Finance,then Minister of Education &Cultural Affairs in Bandaranaike's May 1963 cabinet reshuffle. Kalugalla held his seat through elections in 1965 and 1970,being appointed Minister of Shipping &Tourism,with Aviation being added to his portfolio following the Lanka Sama Samaja Party's departure from the Cabinet in 1975. The 1977 elections saw him lose the Kegalle seat,but won it back in 1994 on the Democratic United National Front ticket,being appointed Deputy Minister of Justice &Cultural Affairs by Chandrika Kumaratunge.
Hector Senarath Rajakaruna Bandara Kobbekaduwa was a Sri Lankan politician and lawyer. He was the Sri Lanka Freedom Party candidate in the 1982 Sri Lankan presidential election and the Minister for Agriculture and Lands from 1970 to 1977. He is remembered for nationalizing privately owned land and restricting the ownership of private land to 20 hectares for the purpose of giving land to landless peasants. He created collectively owned settlement programs called Janawasas in some of the land that was acquired. He contested the 1982 presidential election and lost. The campaign of the SLFP led by him advocated for restoring previous Sri Lanka Freedom Party policies. His opponents ran an effective campaign criticising the closed economy &socialist policies of his Sri Lanka Freedom Party –led regime from 1970-1977,they blamed the SLFP policies for creating scarcities of essential goods and unemployment. Although the SLFP led by him lost the 1982 Sri Lankan presidential election,he managed to gain a significant number of votes in Tamil speaking areas like Point Pedro defeating Tamil nationalist parties.
