Padatik Kolkata is one of the premier institutions in the field of the performing arts in India, especially in Theatre and Dance. It was founded in 1972 by the eminent Theatre Personality, Late Shyamanand Jalan. He was a recipient of the Sangeet Natak Akademi (SNA) Award for Direction in 1972. He was also the vice chairman of SNA from 1999-2004.

Padatik’s productions, both in theatre and dance have toured extensively all over the globe. Padatik had also organized the ‘International Seminar on Indian Dance Traditions and Modern Theatre’ in collaboration with International Theatre Institute (UNESCO) in 1983, and the ‘International Festival & Seminar on Theatre, Dance and Martial Arts’ in 1987.

History

Padatik theatre group was formed by Shyamanand Jalan in 1972. Shyamanand Jalan’s productions over the last 40 years include Evam Indrajit, Sakharam Binder, Hazar Chaurasi Ki Maa, Shakuntala, Panchhi Aise Aate Hain, Uddhwastha Dharamshala, Janata Ka Shatru, Bibiyon ka Madarsa, Adhey Adhurey, Raja Lear, Lahron Ke Rajhans & Madhavi to name just a few.

Padatik Theatre group’s current resident directors are:

Vinay Sharma, whose major productions include Ek Anarchist ki Ittefquia Maut, Godot Ka Intezaar Karte Hue, Mr Biederman aur Aag Laganewale, Antim Din, John Gabriel Borkman, Weekend, ho sakta hai do aadmi do kursiyan (also written by him) and the recently directed Atmakatha [1] to name a few.

Kunal Padhy, whose notable productions include Gali Chahat Wali, Yeh Zindagi Aakhir Kiski, Wada Chirebandi, Thaneer Thaneer and Late Lateef

Janardan Ghosh who has recently directed Hayavadana, Ek Je Chilo Brikkho, Beyond Freud and Khela

Eminent Guest theatre directors invited over the years have included Satyadev Dubey (Mumbai), Rajinder Nath (Delhi), Fritz Bennewitz (Germany), Ranjit Kapoor (Mumbai), Anmol Vellani (Delhi), Vincenzo Cozzi (Italy), Rodney Marriott (USA) and very recently Wlodzimierz Staniewski (Gardzienice Centre for Theatre Practices, Poland). Shyamanand Jalan National Youth Theatre Award

In 2011, Padatik theatre group announced the commemorative Shyamanand Jalan National Youth Theatre Award (annual) for original scripts from Indian playwrights between 18 and 25 years of age. [3]

Padatik Performance Spaces

The late Shyamanand Jalan was one of the first established Indian Theatre Directors to move away from the proscenium theatre and explore studio theatre performances at Padatik. [4] The 1st having opened in 1982, today Padatik houses 3 different intimate performance spaces, fully equipped and functional; which not just the Padatik group but other theatre groups from within and outside the city avail of. It also has its own small sound recording studio.

Kulbhushan Kharbanda

Kulbhushan Kharbanda is an Indian actor who works in Hindi and Punjabi films. He is best known for his role as the antagonist Shakaal in Shaan (1980), Starting off with the Delhi-based theatre group 'Yatrik' in the 1960s, he moved to films with Sai Paranjpye's Jadu Ka Shankh in 1974. He worked in several parallel cinema films before working in the mainstream Hindi film industry. He appeared in Mahesh Bhatt's classic Arth (1982), Ek Chadar Maili Si (1986), Waaris (1988), and in all three parts of Deepa Mehta's Elements trilogy: Fire (1996), Earth (1998), and Water (2005).

<i>Ssshhhh...Koi Hai</i> Indian television series

Ssshhhh...Koi Hai is an Indian horror thriller television anthology series created by Cinevistaas Limited and Contiloe Entertainment for Star Plus. The first season was created by them together, while later seasons were only created by Abhimanyu Raj Singh and were aired on Star Plus' sister channel Star One. The series which premiered on 27 July 2001, ran for three seasons ending on 16 May 2010.

Shyamanand Jalan Indian thespian

Shyamanand Jalan was an influential Kolkata-based Indian thespian, theatre director, and actor. He is credited for the renaissance period of modern Indian theatre and especially the Hindi theatre in Kolkata from the 1960s to 1980s. He was the first to perform modernist Mohan Rakesh, starting with his magnum opus Ashadh Ka Ek Din in 1960 and in the coming years bridged the gap between Hindi theatre and Bengali theatre, by mounting Hindi productions of works by Bengali playwrights, like Badal Sircar's Evam Indrajit (1968) and Pagla Ghora (1971), which in turn introduced Sircar to rest of the country. In 2005, he directed his first and only film Eashwar Mime Co., which was an adaptation of Dibyendu Palit's story, Mukhabhinoy, by Vijay Tendulkar.

Mohan Rakesh

Mohan Rakesh was one of the pioneers of the Nai Kahani literary movement of the Hindi literature in the 1950s. He wrote the first modern Hindi play, Ashadh Ka Ek Din (1958), which won a competition organised by the Sangeet Natak Akademi. He made significant contributions to the novel, the short story, travelogue, criticism, memoir and drama.

Hindi theatre primarily refers to theatre performed in the Hindi language, including dialects such as Braj Bhasha, Khari Boli and Hindustani. Hindi theatre is produced mainly in North India, and some parts of West India and Central India, which include Mumbai and Bhopal. Hindi theatre has its roots in the traditional folk theatre of North India, like Ram lila and Raslila, and also influenced by distant Sanskrit drama. Starting with Bhartendu Harishchandra in the late 19th century and subsequent playwrights like Jaishankar Prasad, Mohan Rakesh, Hindi theatre came of age in the 1940s and 50s, when IPTA movement created a new brand of theatre practitioners in Hindi speaking areas, especially with IPTA Mumbai, Prithvi Theatres of thespian Prithviraj Kapoor, and theatre artiste Habib Tanvir, paving way for next generation of artists who came out once National School of Drama, Delhi started functioning in 1959.
