The palezone shiner (Notropis albizonatus) is a rare species of ray-finned fish in the family Cyprinidae. It is native to Alabama and Kentucky in the United States. It once occurred in Tennessee, but it has been extirpated from the state. [2] There are two populations remaining. [3] It is a federally listed endangered species of the United States.
This fish, which was first described in 1994, is "among the most jeopardized fish species in the United States." [4] The two populations are located in the Paint Rock River of Alabama, a tributary of the Tennessee River, and the Little South Fork of the Cumberland River in Kentucky. Its distribution was once wider; it has also been collected from a tributary of the Clinch River in Tennessee. [3]
This minnow is up to 6 centimetres (2.4 inches) in length. It is very slender and cylindrical in shape. It is straw-colored with dark margins on some of its rear scales. There is a dark, silvery lateral stripe and a spot near the tail. A pale stripe runs above the dark lateral line, giving the fish its name. [3]
This fish lives in flowing streams with clear water and rocky, sandy bottoms. Little is known about the ecology of the species. The species spawns in late spring and summer; little else is known about its reproduction. [3]
This species is a widely disjunct distribution, with two isolated populations located far apart. Its range may have become reduced long ago or it may owe its rarity to more current, degraded conditions in its habitat, or both. Its extirpation from Tennessee was caused by coal mining pollution and the construction of reservoirs. [3]

Bigeye shiners prefer warm, quiet pools with clear water and silt-free substrates. Siltation, channelization, and gravel dredging are all threats to bigeye shiner populations. During spawning season, typically late April to August, bigeye shiners have several clutches of eggs. State agencies and the EPA have both played a role in the surveying of bigeye shiner populations. Populations have decreased in Ohio due mostly to habitat destruction. In addition to habitat destruction by humans, habitat alteration of the small streams and dried pools has also had a significant effect on abundance. Rivers and streams should not be channelized or modified in any way, which is becoming an increasingly popular trend in urban locations. Agricultural areas and properties within the watershed should adhere to regulations to prevent runoff into the streams.

It primarily occurs in the upper Kentucky and Green river systems of eastern and central Kentucky and north-central Tennessee, being found mostly in the Cumberland Plateau and Highland Rim regions. The fish gets its name from gets its name from the scattered dark spots on its relatively pale underside. However, a possible more telling characteristic of the species is the systematical arrangement of the spots at the base of the tail as well as the continuous stripes down either side of the back. Total population size is unknown but figured to be relatively large. The frecklebelly darter is a benthic darter that relies on invertebrates as its principal diet. The frecklebelly darter can be found primarily in creeks and small rivers with a moderate gradient and a pool/riffle type flow, and spends most of its time in midwater areas of the stream. The major threats of the frecklebelly darter include decimation through perturbations such as strip mining as well as stream channelization projects. The darter is thought to have a high resilience with minimum population doubling time less than 15 months; it is also believed to have low vulnerability. Frecklebelly darter females contain about 100-300 mature ova depending on size. Fish become mature by age 1. Spawning in this darter species involves egg burial where the male mounts the female and deposits eggs in deep depressions created by receptive females.
