Panagrolaimus detritophagus is a terrestrial free-living nematode (roundworm). It has been reported in California, South America and Europe. [2] It is the type species of the genus Panagrolaimus . [3] In 2018, it, along with another nematode species ( Plectus parvus ) became the first multicellular organism to be thawed back into a living state after prolonged cryopreservation. [4] [5] Pleistocene permafrost was obtained from the Kolyma River lowland, and thawed. The worms moved and ate after being thawed. They had been frozen for 30–40 thousand years, based on the age of that deposit. [4] [5] [6]

Ecology

This species is non-parasitic. It decomposes soil organic matter with the aid of symbiotic bacteria. [2] As such it is a decomposer. It is also involved in nitrogen mineralization. This species is considered an enrichment opportunist. [7] That means that this is a cp-1 ("colonizer") nematode, like many Panagrolaimidae species. [8] Enrichment opportunists are loosely comparable to r-strategists. They multiply quickly after an organic enrichment event, and then their population rapidly declines when nutrients run out. [9] Organic enrichment is the rapid addition of a large amount of organic nutrients, for example due to a pollution event. [10]

Anatomy

Adult females have been measured to be approximately 740 micrometers long and 33.5 micrometers wide, with a mass of approximately half a microgram. [7] Males and females have been collected. [2] All specimens have a short, cylinder-shaped stoma and a valve in the postcorpus. This species lacks caudal alae. Males have spicules. Females have a single ovary which is reflexed and prodelphic. The spermatheca is offset. This species is described as very active and fast-moving. [2]

The permafrost carbon cycle or Arctic carbon cycle is a sub-cycle of the larger global carbon cycle. <i>Silene stenophylla</i> Species of flowering plant

Silene stenophylla is a species of flowering plant in the family Caryophyllaceae. Commonly called narrow-leafed campion, it is a species in the genus Silene. It grows in the Arctic tundra of far eastern Siberia and the mountains of northern Japan. Frozen samples, estimated via radiocarbon dating to be around 32,000 years old, were discovered in the same area as current living specimens, and in 2012, a team of scientists successfully regenerated a plant from the samples.

Plectus parvus is a species of nematode (roundworm) found in freshwater and terrestrial environments. It has been sampled in Europe and New Zealand. Along with the similar nematode Panagrolaimus detritophagus, in 2018 it was the first species of multicellular eukaryote to be thawed into a living state after prolonged cryopreservation. Female worms of this species were found in Pleistocene permafrost in the Kolyma River lowland. They were mobile and ate, after being frozen for 30–40 thousand years.

The Northeast Siberian coastal tundra ecoregion is an ecoregion that covers the coastal plain of the central north region of Siberia in Russia. This coastal region borders the Laptev Sea and the East Siberian Sea, both marginal seas of the Arctic Ocean, from the Lena River delta in the west to the Kolyma River delta in the east. There are several large river deltas in the area that support breeding grounds for 60 to 80 species of migratory birds. The region is in the Palearctic realm, and the tundra biome. It has an area of 846,149 square kilometres (326,700 sq mi).

The Yana-Indigirka Lowland is a large, low alluvial plain located in northern Siberia, Far Eastern Federal District, Russia.

Retrogressive thaw slumps (RTS), are a type of landslide that occur in the terrestrial Arctic's permafrost region of the circumpolar Northern Hemisphere when an ice-rich section thaws. RTSs develop quickly and can extend across several hectares modifying Arctic coastlines and permafrost terrain. They are the most active and dynamic feature of thermokarst—the collapse of the land surface as ground ice melts. They are thermokarst slope failures due to abrupt thawing of ice-rich permafrost or glaciated terrains. These horseshoe-shaped landslides contribute to the thawing of hectares of permafrost annually and are considered to be one of the most active and dynamic features of thermokarst—the "processes and landforms that involve collapse of the land surface as a result of the melting of ground ice." They are found in permafrost or glaciated regions of the Northern Hemisphere—the Tibetan Plateau, Siberia, from the Himalayas to northern Greenland, and in northern Canada's Northwest Territories (NWT), the Yukon Territories, Nunavut, and Nunavik and in the American state of Alaska. The largest RTS in the world is in Siberia—the Batagaika Crater, also called a "megaslump", is one-kilometre-long and 100 metres (330 ft) deep and it grows a 100 feet (30 m) annually. The land began to sink, and the Batagaika Crater began to form in the 1960s, following clear-cutting of a section of forested area.
