The West Central Railway, one of the 19 zones of the Indian Railways, came into existence on 1 April 2003. It is headquartered at Jabalpur. It was created by taking away two divisions namely Bhopal division and Jabalpur division from central railways and one division namely Kota division from Western Railway zone. The WCR zone provides rail route coverage to the west central region of India. Most of its route is in the states of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan with a very little portion in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

The Howrah–Barddhaman chord line is a broad-gauge rail line connecting Howrah and Bardhaman. The 95-kilometre-long (59 mi) railway line operates in Howrah, Hooghly and Purba Bardhaman districts in the state of West Bengal. The Asansol–Gaya section is a railway line connecting Asansol and Gaya in India. This 267-kilometre long (166 mi) track is part of the Grand Chord, Howrah–Gaya–Delhi line and Howrah–Allahabad–Mumbai line. This section includes the NSC Bose Gomoh–Barkakana line. It is under the jurisdiction of Eastern Railway and East Central Railway. The section links to South Eastern Railway through Bokaro Steel City and Adra.

It is the largest railway station in Jharkhand, handling over 100 trains and 100000+ passengers every day. Dhanbad is also the headquarters of the Dhanbad Rail Division of the East Central Railway zone. Grand Chord rail-line that connects Howrah and New Delhi passes through Dhanbad junction. Dhanbad is located at 23°47′32″N86°25′42″E. It has an elevation of 235 metres (771 ft).

Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction, formerly known as Mughalsarai Junction, is a railway station in the town of Mughalsarai in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The station contains the largest railway marshaling yard in Asia. This yard caters to around 450–500 trains in a month. All trains, including premium category Vande Bharat, Rajdhani and Duronto trains, halt at this station, which makes it unique in the entire Indian Railways network. "Major installations in Mughalsarai include electric locomotive shed holding 147 locomotives, diesel locomotive shed holding 53 locomotives, wagon ROH shed, and a 169-bed divisional hospital."
Shree Siddharoodha Swamiji Hubballi Junction Railway Station, is a railway junction station under Hubballi railway division of South Western Railway zone (SWR) of Indian Railways situated in Hubli, Karnataka, India. The platform number 1 of Hubli Junction has a length of 1,507 metres, making it the longest railway platform in the world as of March 2023.
The Silchar–Secunderabad Express is a Superfast Express train operated by Northeast Frontier Railway zone of Indian Railways that runs between Silchar, Assam and Secunderabad, Telangana via Guwahati. The train is currently being operated with 12513/12514 numbers on a weekly basis. Earlier this train was run between Guwahati and Secunderabad. From 21 October 2023, the train is being extended up to Silchar.

Ranchi–Kamakhya Express is an Express train of the Indian Railways connecting Ranchi Junction in Jharkhand and Kamakhya Junction in Assam. It is currently being operated with 15661/15662 train numbers once in week basis. The train passes through Jharkhand, Bihar, West Bengal and Assam.
The Singrauli–Patna Express is an Express train belonging to East Central Railway zone that runs between Singrauli and Patna Junction in India. It is currently being operated with 13349/13350 train numbers on a daily basis.
The Diesel Locomotive Factory, Marhowrah is a joint venture of GE Transportation, part of American company Wabtec, with Indian Railways for the production of 1000 high-power freight locomotives over a period of 10 years designed to run on Indian railway tracks. This factory is located at Marhaura and started manufacturing the locomotives from September 2018.
