Project Hail Mary is an upcoming American science fiction adventure film produced and directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller from a screenplay by Drew Goddard, based on the 2021 novel by Andy Weir. It is the first film directed by Lord and Miller in 12 years, following their last completed film 22 Jump Street (2014) and their firing from Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018). The film stars Ryan Gosling (also a producer), Sandra Hüller, and Milana Vayntrub, in a story about a man who awakens on an interstellar spacecraft with no memory of how he came to be there.

Contents

Project Hail Mary is scheduled to be released in the United States by Amazon MGM Studios on March 20, 2026.

Premise

Astronaut Ryland Grace awakens on a spacecraft with no memory of himself or his mission. He slowly deduces he is the sole survivor of a crew sent to the Tau Ceti solar system in search of a solution to a catastrophic event on Earth. In his search for answers, Grace must rely on his vast array of scientific knowledge, sheer ingenuity, and human will – but he may not have to search alone.

Cast

Production

In March 2020, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer was nearing a deal to acquire the project, an adaptation of the then-upcoming Andy Weir novel Project Hail Mary , with Ryan Gosling set to star in and produce the film. [1] The rights for the novel were acquired for $3 million. [2] In May, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were hired to direct and produce the film. [3] Drew Goddard (who previously adapted Weir's The Martian into a feature film) was hired to write the screenplay the next month. [4] In April 2024, Amazon MGM Studios, who acquired Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 2022, [5] announced a possible 2026 release window for the film. [6] In May 2024, Sandra Hüller joined the cast of the film, with Greig Fraser hired as cinematographer. [7] In June, Milana Vayntrub joined the cast. [8]

Principal photography began on June 3, 2024, in the United Kingdom and wrapped on October 26, 2024. [9] [10]

Music

It was announced at San Diego Comic Con that Daniel Pemberton would score the film. Pemberton previously worked with Lord and Miller on Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse . This is the first film Lord and Miller directed that was not scored by Mark Mothersbaugh. [11]

Marketing

The official trailer was released on June 30, 2025. [12] On July 9, 2025, it was announced that the trailer had accumulated 400 million global views over social media sites in the first week of its release, making it the most viewed trailer for any movie that was not a sequel or remake. [13]

Release

Project Hail Mary is scheduled to be released on March 20, 2026 in the United States by Amazon MGM Studios, and internationally by Sony Pictures Releasing. The film will also be released in IMAX. [14] [15] [16]
