"Protection" is a collaboration between English trip hop collective Massive Attack and Tracey Thorn from English duo Everything but the Girl. The song appears on Massive Attack's second studio album, Protection (1994). Released as a single on 9 January 1995 by the labels Wild Bunch and Circa, "Protection" reached number 14 on the UK Singles Chart, staying on the chart for four weeks, and also peaked at number 27 in New Zealand. The song received critical acclaim from music critics, whom praised Thorn's vocal performance. Michel Gondry directed the accompanying music video. The song was also included on Everything but the Girl's compilation The Best of and Like the Deserts Miss the Rain .
The song contains samples taken from "The Payback" by James Brown, [2] namely the hi-hat/bass figure that drives the beat and the recurrent wah-wah guitar chord.
Massive Attack had been looking to move away from the "Motown reggae" of their first album. Thorn received a backing track on cassette in the latter half of 1993—without title, melody or lyrics or "any indication as to where those things might go". Taken aback by the comparatively "slow and empty" sound, Thorn recognised that "a whole new thing" was happening. [3]
Initially unsure where to begin, Thorn lived with the track, allowing it to "seep into [her] brain", before putting down the words in a single sitting. She recounted the story of a girl told by friends a few nights earlier and reflected on her protective feelings towards Everything but the Girl band mate Ben Watt following a serious illness. [4]
Larry Flick from Billboard praised the song as "gorgeous". [5] Linda Ryan from the Gavin Report wrote, "Produced by Soul II Soul's Nellee Hooper (who also did Björk's album, Debut ), 'Protection' is a slow groove to paradise. I mean, this one is smooooth! Everything but the Girl's Tracey Thorn handles the vocals on this one, and she really shines." [6] Caroline Sullivan from The Guardian felt that the "normally limpid" singer "shows torchy sensuality" on the song. [7] Chuck Campbell from Knoxville News Sentinel viewed it as "supple", naming it the album's "highlight". [8] In his weekly UK chart commentary, James Masterton complimented the "velvet tones" of Thorn, stating that "the result is an instant Top 20 smash, just one place short of the peak originally reached by their groundbreaking debut hit 'Unfinished Sympathy'." [9] David Stubbs from Melody Maker felt "Protection" "sets the tone that they sustain throughout this eclectic selection, with its stately, undulating sequencers and its wits-end plea for compassion and assistance. And though you want to live yourself/Could you forgive yourself/If you left her as you found her...." [10] James Hamilton from Music Week's RM Dance Update described the song as "an attractive gentle atmospheric R&B swayer". [11]
James Lavelle for NME wrote, "You have to forget the boom-box busting beats of the past and enter a more dreamy, minimalist state, complete with analogue synth, piano lead and a constant, slamming beat. A welcome and brave return.!" [12] Another NME editor, Ted Kessler, praised "her rich voice", [13] while Andy Richardson named it 'Definitely Nearly Single of the Week', writing, "There's a storm brewing. Rain, a bit of thunder and all that stuff. Tracey Thorn breaks in and the sun starts shining. Mr Eno takes over, sprinkles angel dust and the skies clear. We pack our bags, remove some of our clothes and meander to a green-grassed place where we swoon and commune all day. Honest, 'Protection' is music to move you, music to soothe you; a enchanting dive into tranguil waters. It's pure, unadulterated dance; blissed, heavenly feel-good stuff that will make you smile at people in the street." [14] Parry Gettelman from Orlando Sentinel felt the singer is "a cool, elegantly melancholy presence". [15] Matt Hall from Select wrote, "From the moment Tracey Thorn's voice — an inspired recruitment — floats in over the stripped-down beat and patented Wild Bunch time-lapse scratches [...], it's apparent that Massive's ability to do funny things to the nerves on your scalp is undiminished." [16] Barry Walters for Spin constated, "The eight pained minutes of the title track are alone worth the price of the CD, despite suggesting that an Everything but the Girl remix album might have been the way to go." [17]
A music video was produced to promote the single, directed by French film director, screenwriter, and producer Michel Gondry. [18] It was made as a one-take, seven-minute-long video, whose camera travels inside and outside an apartment building observing its tenants. [19] The video both opens and ends on the street outside the building. It received an award from MTV in the category of Video of the Year at the 1995 MTV Europe Music Awards. [20]
Robert Del Naja told The Guardian in 2010, "The 'Protection' video shoot was the most agonising by far. We were lucky to work with Michel Gondry but I can safely say it was the start of all my back problems in life. I had to hold myself for around 15 takes against a slanting wall, in freezing Paris weather. We couldn't get our heads around it until he bought this scaled-down Lego model to the pub … or was it the record company? Either way I had a drink in my hand. But you couldn't storyboard it; without the model you couldn't understand how it would work. He was a very subtle guy, not a big booming director, and had such a strong imagination you had to trust him completely. I'd love to say that idea came all from us, but as a band I guess we take comfort in the fact that he was inspired by the song we gave him." [21]

"Girls & Boys" is a song by English Britpop band Blur, released in March 1994 by Food Records as the lead single from the group's third studio album, Parklife (1994). The frontman of Blur, Damon Albarn wrote the song's lyrics with bandmembers Graham Coxon, Alex James and Dave Rowntree, while Stephen Street produced it.
"If That Were Me" is a song by English recording artist Melanie C. It was co-written and produced by Rick Nowels for her solo debut studio album Northern Star (1999). The song's lyrics address the issue of homelessness. Selected as the album's fifth and final single, "If That Were Me" was released on 27 November 2000. The song peaked at number 18 on the UK Singles Chart, becoming Melanie C's first solo single not to reach the top five. The proceeds from its sale went to the Kandu Arts charity.
"Not Such an Innocent Girl" is the debut solo single by English singer Victoria Beckham. It was released on 17 September 2001 as the lead single from her self-titled debut solo album. It was the United Kingdom's 163rd best-seller of the year, peaking at number six on the UK Singles Chart. The song was originally recorded by American singer Willa Ford. However, her version was only performed live and never officially released.
"Fade into You" is a song by American alternative rock band Mazzy Star from their second studio album, So Tonight That I Might See (1993). The song was written by lyricist Hope Sandoval and composer David Roback, who also served as producer. The song reached number three on the US Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart in 1994 and is Mazzy Star's only single to appear on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 44. The song also charted at number 48 on the UK Singles Chart and number three in Iceland.
"Teardrop" is a song by English trip hop group Massive Attack. Vocals are performed by Scottish singer Elizabeth Fraser, former lead singer of Cocteau Twins, who also wrote the lyrics. It was released on 27 April 1998 by Circa and Virgin as the second single from the group's third studio album, Mezzanine (1998). A harpsichord-driven track, "Teardrop" was originally set to feature vocals from Madonna, whom Massive Attack turned down in favour of Fraser.
"My Love Is for Real" is a song by American singer and songwriter Paula Abdul with backing vocals from Israeli singer Ofra Haza. It was released on May 30, 1995 by Virgin and Captive, as the first single from Abdul's third studio album, Head over Heels (1995). Intended as Abdul's comeback single, "My Love Is for Real" reached number one in Hungary and the top 20 in Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, but it stalled outside the top 20 in the United States, peaking at number 28 on the Billboard Hot 100, and failed to make a major impact in Europe. The song's music video was directed by Michael Haussman.
"Rock and Roll Is Dead" is a song by American musician Lenny Kravitz, released in August 1995 by Virgin as the first single from his fourth album, Circus (1995). The song, both written and produced by Kravitz, reached the top 20 in Canada, Finland, New Zealand, and Spain, but it underperformed in the United States, peaking at number 75 on the Billboard Hot 100. The music video for "Rock and Roll Is Dead" was storyboarded by Andrew Trovaioli and directed by Ruven Afanador. It shows Kravitz performing the song with his band, as well as Kravitz with visual artistic related backgrounds. Kravitz was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance for the song in 1996.
"Let Forever Be" is a song by English electronic music duo the Chemical Brothers, released as the second single from their third studio album, Surrender (1999), on 23 July 1999 in Japan and on 2 August in the United Kingdom. It contains uncredited vocals from Noel Gallagher of Britpop band Oasis, who also co-wrote the song and previously worked with the Chemical Brothers on "Setting Sun".
"Yes" is the debut single of English music duo McAlmont & Butler, released on 15 May 1995 and later included on their debut album, The Sound Of... McAlmont & Butler. The soul ballad was their first UK hit, peaking at number eight on the UK Singles Chart, and remains their most successful single, selling over 200,000 copies in the United Kingdom to earn a silver sales certification. It climbed to its peak of number eight three weeks later and spent a total of 11 weeks on the UK Singles Chart. It also reached the top 30 in Ireland and New Zealand and experienced minimal success in North America. Colours is the debut studio album by English drum and bass producer Adam F. It was released on 3 November 1997 through Positiva Records. The album features collaborations with Tracey Thorn, Grooverider, MC Conrad and Ronny Jordan. The first single from the album, "Circles", was initially released in 1995, but did not chart until its re-release in 1997, when it entered the UK Singles Chart and peaked at number 20. Other singles from the album included "Metropolis" / "Mother Earth", "F-Jam", and "Music In My Mind". Upon release, the album reached number 47 on the UK Albums Chart.

Written by Diane Warren and produced by Steve Thompson and Michael Barbiero, the song can be found on the group's 1992 album Exposé, their third studio album. Lead vocals on the pop ballad were performed by Ann Curless. The song features Al Pitrelli as guest guitarist. "Light of My Life" is a song by British singer Louise, released as her first single as a solo artist following her departure from Eternal earlier that year. Released on 25 September 1995, the ballad reached number eight on the UK Singles Chart and number 18 in Ireland. A music video was made for the song, directed by Russell Young.
"Trouble" is a song by British female pop music duo Shampoo, released in July 1994 by Food Records as the first single from their debut album, We Are Shampoo (1994). The song was written by the duo's Carolyn "Carrie" Askew and Jacqueline "Jacqui" Blake with producer Conall Fitzpatrick, and peaked at No. 11 on the UK Singles Chart. It also reached the top-20 in Australia, Belgium, Finland and the Netherlands, as well as No. 37 in Canada. The single received critical acclaim by music critics and was named Single of the Week by Melody Maker and NME. Attempting to break into the US market, the song was released as a promotional single for the 1995 film Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie, in anticipation of the release of the US version of We Are Shampoo. A new music video was filmed featuring clips from the Power Rangers film. NME magazine ranked "Trouble" at No. 23 on their list of the 50 best songs of 1994.

"Walking Wounded" is a song by English musical duo Everything but the Girl. Member Ben Watt wrote the song's lyrics while electronic music duo Spring Heel Jack composed the music and produced the track. The song appears on Everything but the Girl's ninth studio album, Walking Wounded (1996), in two different versions: the album version as track five and the Omni Trio remix as the final track. It was the duo's first single release on Virgin Records, as their previous label, Blanco y Negro, had dropped them before the Todd Terry remix of "Missing" became a worldwide hit.
