Punjab Sports University, officially Maharaja Bhupinder Singh Punjab Sports University (MBSPSU), is a residential and affiliating sports state university [1] in Patiala, Punjab, India.

History

A sports university in Punjab was announced by the Government of Punjab in June 2017. [2] In July 2019 it was decided to name it after Maharaja Bhupinder Singh. [3] It was established in August 2019 thorough The Maharaja Bhupinder Singh Punjab Sports University Act, 2019 [4] and approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in September of that year. [5] Jagbir Singh Cheema was appointed the first Vice-Chancellor. [6]

Campus

The university was started from a transit campus at Prof. Gursewak Singh Government College of Physical Education. [7] It will have a permanent campus of 97 acres (39 ha) in Sidhowal village, Patiala district adjacent to the Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law. [8]

The University Grants Commission of India is a statutory body set up by the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India in accordance to the UGC Act 1956 and is charged with coordination, determination and maintenance of standards of higher education. It provides recognition to universities in India, and disbursements of funds to such recognized universities and colleges. The headquarters are in New Delhi, and it has six regional centres in Pune, Bhopal, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Guwahati and Bangalore. It was established on 30 April 1962, and is only the second university in the world to be named after a language, after Hebrew University of Israel. Guru Nanak Dev University (G.N.D.U.) was established at Amritsar, Punjab, India on 24 November 1969 to commemorate Guru Nanak Dev's birth quincentenary. Guru Nanak Dev University's campus is spread over 500 acres (2 km²) near village of Kot Khalsa, nearly 8 km west of the Amritsar, next to Khalsa College, Amritsar. Central universities or union universities in India are established by an Act of Parliament and are under the purview of the Department of Higher Education in the Ministry of Education. In general, universities in India are recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC), which draws its power from the University Grants Commission Act, 1956. Moti Bagh Palace

Moti Bagh Palace is a palace in Patiala, also known as Pearl Garden Palace. The word "Moti" means "pearl", and "Bagh" means "garden". The Palace was built by Maharaja Narinder Singh, the great-grandfather of Maharaja Bhupinder Singh, in 1847, at a cost of five lakhs of rupees. The Old Moti Bagh Palace and New Moti Bagh Palace were built respectively by Maharaja Narinder Singh and Maharaja Yadavindra Singh.

Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL), is a public law school and a National Law University located in Patiala, Punjab, India. It was established in 2006 by the Punjab Government as a university dedicated to the field of Legal Education. The first vice-chancellor of the University was Gurjit Singh. The institution is currently being headed by Dr. Paramjit S. Jaswal. RGNUL started functioning from its Headquarters-Mohindra Kothi, The Mall, Patiala w.e.f. 26 May 2006. From session of 2013 RGNUL started functioning in its permanent 50-acre (20 ha) campus which is located at scenic Sidhuwal, 12 km (7.5 mi) from Patiala. RGNUL is affiliated to UGC and approved by the Bar Council of India. It is one of the autonomous law schools in India.

Universities in India are recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC), which draws its power from the University Grants Commission Act, 1956. In addition, 15 Professional Councils are established, controlling different aspects of accreditation and coordination. Private universities in India are regulated under the UGC Regulations, 2003. Per the UGC act and these regulations, private universities are established by an act of a local legislative assembly and listed by the UGC in the Gazette upon receiving the act. As confirmed by ruling of the Supreme Court of India, recognition by the UGC is required for the university to operate. Also, per the 2003 regulations, the UGC sends committees to inspect the private universities and publishes their inspection report.

Maharaja Ranjit Singh Punjab Technical University

Maharaja Ranjit Singh Punjab Technical University (MRSPTU), formerly Maharaja Ranjit Singh State Technical University, is a State technical university of Punjab located in Bathinda, Punjab, India. It was established in 2015 and has jurisdiction over 11 districts namely Bathinda, Ferozepur, Moga, Faridkot, Sri Muktsar Sahib, Barnala, Mansa, Sangrur, Patiala, Fatehgarh Sahib and Fazilka. University will function from upgraded Giani Zail Singh Punjab Technical University Campus. MRSPTU has signed MoU with Thompson Rivers University of Canada in which a student of 4 year Bachelor's degree program here after studying for 2 years, can complete rest 2 years in Canada and also get 3 year work permit in Canada. The building is situated in bathinda - dabwali road. MRSPTU is also fit for central assistance under section 12(B).
