The Queensland Open [1] originally called the Queensland Championships [2] and also known as the Queensland Lawn Tennis Championships [3] and the Queensland State Championships was a tennis tournament played in Brisbane, Australia, from 1888 to 1994. The event was part of the Grand Prix tennis circuit and WTA Tour and was played originally on outdoor grass courts then outdoor and indoor hard courts.

History

The Queensland State Championships were first played on grass until 1969. The Queensland Open continued on grass courts until 1982 between 1987 and 1988 it switched to indoor hard courts from 1989 to 1991 it was then played on outdoor hard courts before returning to indoor hard courts until the tournament ceased. The tournament was hosted at various venues over the course of its history first at the Toowong Sports Ground (1888, 1891–1893), the Breakfast Creek Sports Ground (1889–1890), the Brisbane Exhibition Grounds (1894–1896), the Woolloongabba Cricket Ground Cricket (1897,99 1900–04, 1907–08), the Auchenflower Ground (1904–1915) before settling in a permanent base at the Milton Courts tennis centre from (1919–1994). The tournament featured men's and women's singles and doubles competition as well as mixed doubles events the tournament survived for a period of 106 years, the tennis center was closed in 1997 due to heavy financial losses by Tennis Queensland.

Anthony Frederick Wilding, also known as Tony Wilding, was a New Zealand world No. 1 tennis player and soldier who was killed in action during World War I. Considered the world's first tennis superstar, Wilding was the son of wealthy English immigrants to Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand and enjoyed the use of private tennis courts at their home. He obtained a legal education at Trinity College, Cambridge and briefly joined his father's law firm. Wilding was a first-class cricketer and a keen motorcycle enthusiast. His tennis career started with him winning the Canterbury Championships aged 17. He developed into a leading tennis player in the world during 1909–1914 and is considered to be a former world No. 1. He won 11 Grand Slam tournament titles, six in singles and five in doubles, and is the first and to date only player from New Zealand to have won a Grand Slam singles title. In addition to Wimbledon, he also won three other ILTF World Championships : In singles, two World Hard Court Championships (WHCC) (1913–14) and one World Covered Court Championships (WCCC) (1913). With his eleven Grand Slam tournaments, two WHCC and one WCCC titles, he has a total of fourteen Major tournament titles. His sweep of the three ILTF World Championships in 1913 was accomplished on three different surfaces being the first time this has been achieved in Major tournaments.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">ASB Tennis Centre</span>

The ASB Tennis Centre is a tennis facility located in the Parnell district of Auckland, New Zealand. The centre was opened on 18 November 1922 by the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association on grounds leased from the Auckland City Council, that are a part of Pukekawa / Auckland Domain. Originally the centre had nine outdoor grass courts as well as a stand for 400 spectators. In 1977 the surface of the courts, 12 at the time, was changed to hardcourt. It currently hosts the ASB Classic for both men and women on consecutive weeks in January each year before the Australian Open. The centre is also a regular host of New Zealand Davis Cup team ties, including the 1975 and 1977 Eastern Zone finals. It is located on Stanley Street next to the Domain entrance.

The Bristol Open, originally known as the West of England Championships and the West of England Lawn Tennis Championships is a defunct tennis tournament that was originally hosted in Bath, Somerset, England, from 1881 till 1895. It was staged briefly in Bristol, England, in 1896, then from 1920 onwards was hosted again in Bristol annually until the tournament ceased in 1989.
