Björn Borg finished the year as ATP world No. 1 for the second time in his career. Borg won eight titles during the season, including two majors at the French Open and the Wimbledon Championships, as well as the Masters Grand Prix. He also finished runner-up at another major at the US Open.

John McEnroe was the 1980 Grand Prix No. 1. McEnroe won nine tournaments during the season, including a major at the US Open, and finished runner-up at another major at the Wimbledon Championships.

The 1980 Volvo Grand Prix was a men's professional tennis circuit held that year. It incorporated the four grand slam tournaments, the Grand Prix tournaments. The Grand Prix circuit is a precursor to the ATP Tour.

Contents

Volvo became the new tour sponsor of the Grand Prix circuit after Colgate-Palmolive decided to end its sponsorship. [1] [2] Eight World Championship Tennis tournaments were incorporated into the circuit.

Standings

The 1980 Grand Prix tournaments were divided in 12 separate point categories, ranging from the Grand Slam tournaments (350 points for the winner) to the smallest Regular Series tournaments (50 points for the winner). At the end of the year the top-ranked players received a bonus from a $750,000 bonus pool. To qualify for a bonus a player must have participated in at least three Grand Prix tournaments with a prize money of $175,000 or more as well as three tournaments with prize money of $50,000–$75,000 during weeks when a $75,000 event is scheduled.

The ILTF Grand Prix tennis circuit was a professional tennis tour for male players that existed from 1970 to 1989. The Grand Prix and World Championship Tennis (WCT) were the two predecessors to the current tour for male players, the ATP Tour, with the Grand Prix being more prominent.

World Championship Tennis (WCT) was a tour for professional male tennis players established in 1968 and lasted until the emergence of the ATP Tour in 1990. The 1985 Nabisco Grand Prix was a professional men's tennis circuit held that year. It consisted of 71 tournaments held in 19 different countries. The tour incorporated the four ITF grand slam tournaments, three World Championship Tennis tournaments and the Grand Prix tournaments. Total prize money for the circuit was $23 million. The circuit was administered by the Men's International Professional Tennis Council (MIPTC). In November 1985 the MIPTC sued player–management agencies ProServ and IMG alleging that these firms were holding the tennis game hostage and were 'exerting extensive power over players'.

The 1980 Masters was a men's tennis tournament played on indoor carpet courts and held at the Madison Square Garden, in New York City, New York, United States from January 14 through January 18, 1981. It was the year-end championship of the 1980 Volvo Grand Prix tour. First-seeded Björn Borg won the singles title and earned $100,000 first-prize money.

On 30 April 1981 World Championship Tennis (WCT) announced its withdrawal from the Grand Prix circuit, which it had been incorporated into since 1978, and the re-establishment of its own tour calendar for the 1982 season. To counter the threat of player leaving the Grand Prix tour for the WCT the MIPTC introduced a mandatory commitment to play at least 10 Grand Prix Super Series tournaments.

However he did not play enough tournaments (13) to qualify for largest share ($300,000) of the bonus pool, which instead went to third–ranked Eddie Dibbs.

The 1977 Colgate-Palmolive Grand Prix was a professional tennis circuit administered by the International Lawn Tennis Federation which served as a forerunner to the current Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) World Tour and the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Tour. The circuit consisted of the four modern Grand Slam tournaments and open tournaments recognised by the ILTF. The Colgate-Palmolive Masters is included in this calendar but did not count towards the Grand Prix ranking. Colgate-Palmolive was the new tour sponsor, taking over from Commercial Union. Guillermo Vilas won the Grand Prix circuit, having accumulated the most points (2,047), and received the largest share from the bonus pool ($300,000). The circuit ran from February through November.

The 1971 Pepsi Cola Grand Prix was a professional tennis circuit held that year. It incorporated three of the four Grand Slam tournaments, the Grand Prix tournaments. It was the second edition of the Grand Prix circuit and was run by the International Lawn Tennis Federation (ITLF). In addition to regular tournament prize money a bonus prize money pool of £60,000 ($150,000) was available to be divided among the 20 highest ranking players after the last tournament. To be eligible for a share of the bonus pool a player had to compete in a minimum of nine tournaments. The circuit culminated in a Masters event in Paris for the seven highest point scoring players. Stan Smith was the winner of the circuit with 187 ranking points and four tournament victories.

The 1983 Seiko World Super Tennis, also known as the Tokyo Indoor, was a men's tennis tournament played on indoor carpet courts at the Yoyogi National Stadium in Tokyo in Japan that was part of the 1983 Volvo Grand Prix. The tournament was held from 24 October through 28 October 1983. It was a major tournament of the Grand Prix tennis circuit and matches were the best of three sets. John McEnroe was the defending champion but did not participate. First-seeded Ivan Lendl won the singles title, his eighth title of the season, and earned $75,000 first-prize money.

The 1982 Monte Carlo Open was a men's tennis tournament played on outdoor clay courts at the Monte Carlo Country Club in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, France that was part of the 1982 Volvo Grand Prix circuit. It was the 76th edition of the tournament and was held from 5 April through 11 April 1982. Second-seeded Guillermo Vilas won the singles title.

The 1980 Austrian Open , also known as the 1980 Head Cup for sponsorship reasons, was a combined men's and women's tennis tournament played on outdoor clay courts. It was categorized as a two-star tournament and was part of the men's 1980 Volvo Grand Prix circuit and of the Colgate Series of the women's 1980 WTA Tour. It took place at the Tennis Stadium Kitzbühel in Kitzbühel, Austria and was held from 21 July through 27 July 1980. First-seeded Guillermo Vilas won the men's singles title and the accompanying $13,000 first-prize money while Virginia Ruzici won the women's singles event.

The 1981 United Virginia Bank Classic, also known as the Richmond WCT, was a men's tennis tournament played on indoor carpet courts at the Richmond Coliseum in Richmond, Virginia, United States. The event was part WCT Tour which was incorporated into the 1981 Volvo Grand Prix circuit. It was the 16th edition of the tournament and was held from February 2 through February 8, 1981. Eighth-seeded Yannick Noah won the singles title and $35,000 first-prize money after his opponent in the final Ivan Lendl retired with a pulled leg muscle.
