Rahul Narwekar is an Indian politician and member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He is the current speaker of Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. Narwekar was elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Council in June 2016 as a Governor's Nominated member. He is the second-youngest (age 44) person to be elected speaker of any state in the country, the youngest being Shivraj Patil (age 42). [1] [2] In May 2023, he completed a 4-day UK tour speaking at the Ideas for India Conference organised by Bridge India in London, [3] and speaking with students at Cambridge University. His tour attracted media attention [4] [5] [6] [7] because of its proximity to the Supreme Court judgement on the disqualification of 16 MLAs of the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena. [8]

Personal life

Rahul Narwekar is the son-in-law of senior NCP leader Ramraje Naik Nimbalkar. Rahul's father, Suresh Narwekar was a Municipal Councillor from the Colaba area. Rahul's brother Makarand Narwekar is a second-term Municipal Councillor, currently from Ward No. 227. [9] [10] [11] [12] [13] [14] His sister-in-law Harshita Narwekar is also a Municipal Councillor on a Bhartiya Janata Party ticket from the Cuffe Parade area. [15]


Political career

Narwekar began his political career with the Shiv Sena party, where he served as a spokesperson for the youth wing. After 15 years with the Shiv Sena, Narwekar left the party in 2014 when he was denied a ticket for the Lok Sabha election. [16] He then joined the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and contested the 2014 Lok Sabha election from the Maval constituency but was unsuccessful. In June 2016, Narwekar was elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Council as a Governor's Nominated member. [17] In 2019, Narwekar switched to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and successfully contested the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly election from the Colaba constituency, winning by over 57,000 votes. [18] On July 3, 2022, Narwekar was elected as the Speaker of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. At the age of 45, he became the youngest person to be elected as Speaker of any state legislature in India. [19] In May 2023, Narwekar was tasked by the Supreme Court of India with deciding on the disqualification petitions of 34 MLAs from the two factions of Shiv Sena that emerged after the party split in 2022. Sunil Dnyandev Kamble is an Indian politician. He was elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly from Pune Cantonment in the 2019 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly election as a member of Bharatiya Janata Party. He has previously served as Corporator in the Pune Municipal Corporation since 1992 - incumbent. He is known for his social work and direct approach. He was also elected as Standing Committee Chairperson of PMC in March 2019. He is the younger brother of 2 times BJP Minister Dilip Kamble. Coming from an extremely poor background, he emerged as a mass leader at a very young age. He began his social life as a young activist in ABVP. He played a pivotal role from the BJP side in campaigning and contacting on booth level in elections to the Balurghat Assembly constituency in West Bengal 2021 elections. Shri. Kamble currently is also a member of the legislative committee on Schedule Castes in the Maharashtra Legislature.

Mukta Tilak was an Indian politician. She was elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly from Kasba Peth in the 2019 state elections as a member of Bharatiya Janata Party.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Maha Vikas Aghadi</span> Indian political alliance

The Maha Vikas Aghadi or Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi, is a state-level political coalition formed after the 2019 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly election under the leadership of Uddhav Thackeray of SHS (UBT), Sharad Pawar of the NCP and Sonia Gandhi of the INC, along with the support from the Samajwadi Party, PWPI, CPI(M) and several other political parties including Independent MLAs. The 2023 Nationalist Congress Party split occurred on 2 July 2023, when Ajit Pawar, along with several other party leaders, broke away from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) led by his uncle Sharad Pawar and joined the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-Shiv Sena alliance government in Maharashtra. Ajit Pawar was sworn in as Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, along with eight other NCP leaders who took oath as ministers. This led to a vertical split in the party, with two factions emerging: one led by Sharad Pawar and the other by Ajit Pawar. The split resulted in a legal battle over the party's name and symbol. On 6 February 2024, the Election Commission of India (ECI) awarded the party name and symbol to the faction headed by Ajit Pawar. The faction led by Sharad Pawar was subsequently recognized as Nationalist Congress Party. On 5 March 2024, Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar declared the Ajit Pawar faction as the "real" NCP, citing its legislative majority.
