Ramkuiwangbe Jeme Newme (Born: 25 May 1947) is an Indian Social worker from Assam. [2] He is a retired Elementary Education Officer from Dima Hasao district of Assam. The Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri in 2023 for his lifelong efforts to promote education, eradicate sacrifice and protect and preserve the Heraka movement of the Naga people. [1] [3]

Life and work

Ramkuiwangbe Jeme Newme was born on May 25, 1947, [1] at Boro Henam, 28 km from Haflong one of the oldest Jeme villages of Dima Hasao district, located in the state of Assam. [2] His father Inchekambe Newme was a political leader. [4] He did his schooling and High School from Government Boys’ High School, Haflong and obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree from Shillong Government College in 1975. [4] He appointed as the North Cachar Hills District Council’s Sub-Inspector of Schools in Haflong in 1980 and retired as the District Primary Education Officer in 2011. [1] He is a social worker who is known as the ‘Hero of Heraka’ for preserving and promoting the Heraka faith and traditional culture of the Heraka people. [5] [6] . He transcribed the Heraka religious text "Tingwang Hingde" and founded ten primary schools throughout his life [7] He has also promoted women's education throughout his life. He worked as a personal assistant to liberation fighter Rani Gaidinliu. [8]

In 1974, Newme was the founding General Secretary of the Zeliangrong Heraka Association in North East India. [9] He is an active and dynamic leaders of the Heraka movement, a socio-religious movement established by Haipou Jadonang. [10]

Newme was nominated as the Court member of Dibrugarh University, Assam. [4] Presently, he is the president of Lodi High School Committee and of Rani Gaidinliu Memorial Junior College Committee, Haflong. [4]

Within the Heraka faith, she came to be considered an incarnation of the Goddess Cherachamdinliu. Satish Chandra Kakati was an Indian journalist, writer, the editor of The Assam Tribune, an Assam based English-language daily, and one of the founders of Assam Bani, a vernacular weekly started in 1955 by The Assam Tribune group. He was the vice president of the Editors' Guild of India and authored seven books in Assamese and English. A 2005 recipient of the Kanaklata Barua and Mukunda Kakati Memorial Award, Kakati was awarded the fourth highest civilian award of the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 1991.

Haflong, the district headquarters as well as its nearest town, is 17 km away to the east by the existing state road, and Harangajao lies to the west. Retzawl is surrounded by villages like Jatinga, on the east; Doiheng on the south; Jatinga Lampu on the west and Inchaikang on the north.

Jamchonga Nampui was an Indian civil servant. He was an Indian Administrative Service officer of Assam-Meghalaya cadre. He was the first person from Assam to be directly recruited to the IAS as well as the first Scheduled Tribe IAS officer in India when he cleared the civil services examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission in 1954. He belongs to the Biate community of Northeast India.

Sulagitti Narasamma was an Indian midwife from Pavagada town, in Tumkur district of Karnataka state. She performed more than 20,000 traditional deliveries free of charge over a 70-year period of service in deprived regions of Karnataka with no medical facilities. Her work was honored with the National Citizen's award of India in 2012 and the country's fourth highest civilian award, the Padma Shri, in 2018.

Dhaneswar Engti is a poet-author from the Indian State of Assam promoting the use of the endangered Karbi language spoken by the Karbi people of Northeastern India. Engti has authored 19 books and written around 100 songs in the Karbi language. He has also served as the Joint Secretary of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council. In the year 2022, Govt. of India conferred on him the Padma Shri award for his work towards the preservation and advancement of indigenous languages.

Gobinda Chandra Langthasa was an Indian politician from the state of Assam. He was a member of Assam Legislative Assembly for Haflong. He was also a cabinet minister in the first Tarun Gogoi cabinet, and Deputy Chief Minister of Assam under Hiteswar Saikia.

Kapil Dev Prasad is a weaver from Bihar, India. He is known for popularising the Buddhist art of weaving ‘bawan buti’ on sarees, bedsheets and curtains.

Konsam Ibomcha Singh is Indian artist who makes traditional Laiphadibi dolls and toys in Manipur. He participated in various national exhibitions, is a recipient of the Manipur State award for his contribution in handicraft. He was conferred the Padma Shri Award in March 2022 in Delhi for his pioneering work in Art. For over three decades, he has been crafting dolls, thereby garnering recognition and accolades.

Hemoprova Chutia is an Indian handloom weaver and artist based in Dibrugarh, Assam who has crafted a variety of creations using diverse fabrics such as cotton, silk, wool, and intricately cut bamboo. She has received various awards and honours for her contribution in the art, including the Assam Gourav award presented by the Government of Assam in 2022.

Hem Chandra Goswami is an Indian mask-making artist from Assam's Majuli district. He received the India’s fourth-highest civilian award Padma Shri in 2023 for his contributions in the field of art.
