Vedaratnam Appakutti Pillai was an Indian freedom fighter, social worker and the co-founder of Kasturba Gandhi National Memorial Trust, a non profit non governmental organization working for the welfare of women in the rural areas of Indian state of Tamil Nadu. [1]

Born into a family of salt merchants in the state of Tamil Nadu to A. Vedaratnam, a freedom activist, he contributed to the efforts of his father to found Kasturba Gandhi Kanya Gurukulam, a rural residential school for girls from financially challenged families, at Vedaranyam, in Nagapattinam district of the state. [2] [3] The establishment has grown over the years to house a printing school, electronics and computer training school and an incense manufacturing unit. [4] The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of Padma Shri in 1989. [5]

The Bharat Ratna is the highest civilian award of the Republic of India. Instituted on 2 January 1954, the award is conferred in recognition of "exceptional service/performance of the highest order", without distinction of race, occupation, position, or sex. Krishnammal Jagannathan is an Indian social activist from the state of Tamil Nadu. She and her husband, Sankaralingam Jagannathan, protested against social injustice and they are Gandhian activists. <span class="mw-page-title-main">1923 Madras Presidency Legislative Council election</span>

The second legislative council election to Madras Presidency after the establishment of diarchical system of government by the Government of India Act, 1919 was held in 1923. Voter turnout was higher than the previous election. Swarajists, a breakaway group from Indian National Congress participated in the election. The ruling Justice Party had suffered a split, when a splinter group calling themselves anti-Ministerialists left the party. It won the highest number of seats but fell short of a majority. Nevertheless, Madras Governor Willington invited it to form the government. Incumbent Justice chief minister Panagal Raja was nominated by party leader Theagaraya Chetty to continue as chief minister for a second term. The government survived a no-confidence motion, brought against it on the first day of its tenure by the opposition headed by C. R. Reddy.

Harijan Sevak Sangh is a non-profit organisation founded by Mahatma Gandhi in 1932 to eradicate untouchability in India, working for Harijan or Dalit people and upliftment of Depressed Class of India. It is headquartered at Kingsway Camp in Delhi, with branches in 26 states across India.

Amalprava Das, also known as Amal Prabha Das, was an Indian social worker, Gandhian and the founder of Kasturba Ashram at Sarania Hills, Assam, a self help group for women and their economic upliftment and Guwahati Yubak Sevadal, a non governmental organization working for the social development of harijans. The Government of India honoured her in 1954, with the award of Padma Shri, the fourth highest Indian civilian award for her contributions to the society, placing her among the first recipients of the award. A recipient of the 1981 Jamnalal Bajaj Award, Das was honoured again by the Government of India with the second highest civilian award of Padma Vibhushan which she declined to accept.

Krishnaswami Srinivas Sanjivi (1903–1994) was an Indian medical doctor, Gandhian, social worker and the founder of Voluntary Health Services (VHS), a medical facility in Chennai reported to be serving the lower and middle-class people of the society. He was honoured by the Government of India in 1971 with Padma Shri, the fourth highest Indian civilian award. Five years later, the government followed it up by awarding him the third highest civilian award of Padma Bhushan in 1976.

Kanta Tyagi is an Indian social worker and the director of the Kasturba Vanvasi Kanya Ashram, a non governmental organization based at Nimar which is engaged in services focussed at the economically and socially compromised rural women of Madhya Pradesh. Under the aegis of the organization, she runs a tailoring and knitting school, a condiments and Pappad manufacturing unit and a health centre for tribal women and children. She is the Official representative (Pratinidhi) of the Kasturba Gandhi National Memorial Trust in Niwali, Madhya Pradesh and a member of the Resettlement and Rehabilitation Subgroup for the Sardar Sarovar Project, a part of the Narmada Control Authority (NCA). She received the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award from the Government of India in 1998 for her services to the rural community. She is also a recipient of the Janaki Devi Bajaj Award (2002) of the Indian Merchants Chambers Ladies’ Wing.

P. R. Thilagam, popularly known as Thiruvarur Thilagam, is an Indian composer, vocalist and exponent of Kuravanji, a traditional form of dance drama popular in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. She hails from Kondi parampara of the Isai Vellalar community, a sect of women dedicated to the worship at Thyagaraja Temple, Tiruvarur.

Meenakshi Chitharanjan, an Indian classical dancer, teacher and choreographer, is known as an exponent of the Pandanallur style of the classical dance form of Bharatanatyam. She is the founder of Kaladiksha, an institution promoting Bharatanatyam and striving to preserve the Pandanallur tradition. A disciple of the father-son duo of Chokkalingam Pillai and Subbaraya Pillai, she is a recipient of several honours including Kalaimamani Award of the Government of Tamil Nadu and the Natya Kala Sarathi of Sri Parthasarathy Swami Sabha. The Government of India awarded her the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2008, for her contributions to classical dance.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Narthaki Nataraj</span> Indian dancer

Narthaki Nataraj is a Bharatanatyam dancer. In 2019, she was awarded the Padma Shri, making her the first transgender woman to be awarded India's fourth-highest civilian award.
