Sudhir M. Parikh is an American medical doctor of Indian origin, known for his expertise in the treatment of Asthma and allergies [1] and for his social activities. [2] [3] The Government of India honoured him, in 2010, with the award of Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, for his contributions to the field of social service. [4]

Biography

Sudhir M. Parikh, a Gujarat born [5] medical graduate from B. J. Medical College, Ahmedabad, migrated to the US in the Seventies, is a known allergist and immunologist, [6] [7] practicing in Highland Park, New Jersey. He set up his private practice in 1980 at Hoboken, New Jersey [5] and is now associated with several hospitals such as Asthma and Allergy of New Jersey, Asthma and Allergy Medical Care of New York, Allergy Asthma Associates of Murray Hill, [8] Christ Hospital and Hoboken University Medical Center. [1] He also works for the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in the capacity of an Assistant Professor. [7]

Social activities

Parikh is known to be involved in social activities in a number of areas, partly on behalf of the foundation he founded in the nineties, the Parikh Foundation. [5] Under the aegis of the foundation, Dr. Parikh assisted in raising monies for humanitarian relief activities for the tsunami victims of Tamil Nadu and the earthquake victims of Gujarat. [2] He was one of delegates who accompanied President Bill Clinton on his visit of the affected areas of the Gujarat earthquake. [5] [2] He has also contributed towards raising of funds to spread AIDS awareness and other healthcare issues in India. [5] He is reported to have contributed more than US$ 2 million from his personal funds to Share and Care Foundation, Nargis Dutt Memorial Foundation, and the American India Foundation. [5] [2] He provided the corpus for a scholarship programme for the Indo American community through Share and Care Foundation during 1995 through 2005 and is a supporter of the Ekal Vidyalaya, a tribal education programme in India. Parikh is a former member of the National Leadership Advisory Committee of the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian Americans. It is reported that Dr. Parikh's interventions helped to influence Congressmen Elliot Engel, Rush Holt and Anthony Weiner to join the Caucus. [2] He is also a founder member of the Indian American Republican Council (IARC). [2] Parikh Worldwide Media is a publishing house he has founded where he serves as the Chairman. [9] The media house has four publications, [3] News India Times, [10] two Desi Talk editions [11] such as Desi Talk in New York, Desi Talk in Chicago and The Indian American. [12] Dr. Parikh, a member of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin [13] also holds memberships in the American College of Allergy and Immunology, the American Academy of Allergy and Immunology, the New Jersey Allergy Society, the New Jersey Medical Society, and the Middlesex County Medical Society. Awards and recognitions

Parikh has been honored with The Ellis Island Medal of Honor (2005) and the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman, (2006) [3] which succeeded the National Excellence Award by the then Prime Minister of India, P. V. Narasimha Rao, in 2002. [2] [7] [14] In 2010, he was awarded the Padma Shri, [7] when he was included in the Indian Republic Day honours. [14] [2] [5] [13]

Ramanlal C. Mehta was an Indian musician and musicologist. In 2009, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India's third-highest civilian honour.

Jaishankar Bhojak

Jaishankar Bhudhardas Bhojak, better known by his theatre name Jaishankar Sundari , was an Indian actor and director of Gujarati theatre. Starting at the young age, he rose to fame for his roles of female impersonator in early Gujarati plays. He retired from acting in 1932 but returned to theatre direction and teaching in 1948. He directed and acted in several successful plays. He was awarded the Ranjitram Suvarna Chandrak in 1951 and the Padma Vibhushan in 1971.

R. Nagarathnamma Indian theatre personality

R. Nagarathnamma (1926–2012) was an Indian theatre personality and the founder of Stree Nataka Mandali, an all-women theatre group based in Bengaluru. A recipient of the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, she was honored by the Government of India, in 2012, with the fourth highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri.

Kavungal Chathunni Panicker

Kavungal Chathunni Panicker (1922-2007) was an Indian classical dancer, known for his proficiency in Kathakali, the traditional dance form of Kerala. He was an exponent of the Kavungal School of Kathakali, noted for its rigorous training methods and overt physical interpretation of abhinaya. He is known to have brought innovations to the dance form, especially in the decorative movements (kalasam) and his contributions are reported in the development of grammar and costumes for the Kavungal School. A recipient of the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1973, Panicker was honored again by the Government of India, in 2006, with the fourth highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri.

Malavika Sarukkai

Malavika Sarukkai is an Indian classical dancer and choreographer specializing in Bharatanatyam. A 2002 winner of the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, she was honoured by the Government of India in 2003 with Padma Shri, the fourth highest Indian civilian award.

Bindhyavasini Devi was an Indian folk musician. She was popularly recognised as Bihar Kokila. She was the founder of Vindhya Kala Mandir, a Patna based music academy promoting folk music, Vindhya Kala Mandir. The academy is associated with Bhatkhande University, Lucknow for 55 years now which is now run by her daughter-in-law Shobha Sinha, son Sudhir Kumar Sinha. She was born in Muzzafarpur in the Indian state of Bihar and specialised in Maithili, Bhojpuri and Magahi folk music. She also sang a popular song, Chhote Dulha Ke, in a movie, Vivah Geet and many of her songs have been released in CD format.

Devendra Triguna is an Indian Ayurveda practitioner, known for his expertise in Pulse diagnosis. He is a former honorary physician to the President of India and the incumbent president of the Association of Manufacturers of Ayurvedic Medicine (AMAM) and the All India Ayurvedic Congress (AIAC). The Government of India awarded him the fourth-highest civilian award, the Padma Shri, in 1999, and followed it up, a decade later, with the third-highest honour of the Padma Bhushan in 2009.

Mohsin Wali

Mohsin Wali is an Indian cardiologist and a former honorary physician to R. Venkataraman and Shankar Dayal Sharma and the serving physician to Pranab Mukherjee. His first assignment as a physician to the President of India was with R. Venkataraman, at the age of 33, making him the youngest physician to serve an Indian President. He is the only physician to have served three Presidents of India. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2007, for his contributions to Indian medicine.

Raman Viswanathan (1899–1982) was an Indian chest physician, medical mycologist and pulmonologist, considered by many as the father of Chest Medicine in India. He was the founder director of Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute, a postgraduate medical institute based in Delhi. An elected fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians, Royal College of Physicians of London, Indian National Science Academy and the Academy of Medical Sciences, United Kingdom, he was a recipient of several honors including the Forlanini Medal by Italian Tuberculosis Association and the Eugeno Morelli Prize of the National Academy of Sciences, Italy. The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan, in 1974, for his contributions to medicine.

Bhikhudan Gadhvi Indian folk singer (born 1948)

Bhikhudan Govindbhai Gadhvi is an Indian folk singer and songwriter, known as a proponent of Dayro, a narrative singing tradition of Gujarat. He is a recipient of the Gujarat Gaurav Award of the Government of Gujarat and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2016, for his contributions to folk music.

Sudhir V. Shah is an Indian neurologist, professor and the head of the department of neurology at Smt. NHL Municipal Medical College, Ahmedabad. Holder of an MD in general medicine and a DM in neurology, he is associated with the Neurological Society of India, Indian Academy of Neurology and Association of Physicians of India as a member. He is known for his research on brain cells and books on neurology and Jainism which have reportedly been sold over 50,000 copies, the earnings of which have been donated to charities. He is a former chairman of the National Jain Doctor’s Federation as well as a director of neurosciences at Sterling Hospitals and has served as the honorary neurologist to the Governor of Gujarat. He has written several articles on neurology and spirituality which include Journey to Happiness and Peace, The Art and Science of Meditation, Diseases of The Brain and Nervous System, and Jainism: A Super Science and is a co-author of Meditation Must, a book detailing the medical aspects of meditation. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2016, for his contributions to medical science.

Sudhir K. Jain Vice-chancellor of BHU

Sudhir Kumar Jain, referred to as Sudhir K. Jain is the incumbent and 28th Vice-Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University. He is a civil engineer by education and has formerly served three terms as the founding director of the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar. He has carried out intensive research and development in the fields of Seismic Design Codes, Dynamic of Buildings, and Post Earthquake Studies. Beside these, Jain has actively participated in teaching, research activities and development in Earthquake Engineering focused on developing countries. He is an elected fellow of Indian National Academy of Engineering. He was also elected a member of U.S. National Academy of Engineering (2021) for leadership in earthquake engineering in developing countries.
