Rizokarpaso is a town on the Karpas Peninsula in the Northeastern part of Cyprus. The Zirve University was a private university established in 2009, located in Gaziantep, southeastern Anatolia, Turkey. The university had eight faculties. It was a mix-oriented institution. English language was the primary medium of teaching in College of Engineering, College of Architecture and Design, and College of Economics and Administrative Sciences. Turkish language was the primary medium of teaching for the rest of colleges while several courses were also offered in English. The university had total enrollment of more than 8,000 undergraduate and graduate students in 2016.
Istanbul Şehir University was a private, non-profit university located in Istanbul, Turkey. It was established in 2008 by the Bilim ve Sanat Vakfı. The university started its education in the academic year of 2010–11 at its campus in Altunizade, Üsküdar, following a ceremony held on October 5, 2010 that was attended by then State President Abdullah Gül, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmet Davutoğlu. The university was closed down on June 30, 2020, after it faced financial difficulties stemming from a legal land dispute, which in turn was fueled by a bitter political feud.

During Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's campaign for presidency in 2014 and throughout his presidency, there were numerous claims that he didn't graduate from a university and therefore he is ineligible to be President of Turkey, because he was not a university graduate. Similar claims have also been made about Erdogan's high school diploma. These claims refer to Article 101 of the Turkish constitution stating that presidential candidates are required to have completed their tertiary education. The article however doesn't narrow down tertiary education to universities only, allowing other options such as trade schools and colleges.
