The SOS Design Festival is an annual graphics and product design festival held in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. [1] It was established by the Academy of Fine Arts in cooperation with the National Gallery of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the International Council of Design. [2] It is primarily an educational platform, while also being as an exhibitory event that was originally conceived by the students of the Department of Graphic and Product design of the Academy of Fine Arts in Sarajevo. [3]

An arts festival is a festival that can encompass a wide range of art genres including music, dance, film, fine art, literature, poetry etc. and isn't solely focused on "visual arts." Arts festivals may feature a mixed program that include music, literature, comedy, children's entertainment, science, or street theatre, and are typically presented in venues over a period of time ranging from as short as a day or a weekend to a month. Each event within the program is usually separately ticketed.

[5] It also provides a new form of supplementary education to students and professionals in the field of design and encourages the development and promotion of design in the Former Yugoslavia. [6]

PechaKucha

PechaKucha is a presentation style in which 20 slides are shown for 20 seconds each. The format, which keeps presentations concise and fast-paced, powers multiple-speaker events called PechaKucha Nights (PKNs).

The festival lasts for five days and hosts numerous international guests, speakers, lecturers and artists. Guests have included Milton Glaser, Ian Anderson, Dick Bruna, April Greiman, Peter Saville, Roberto Baldazzini, Mirko Ilić, Oscar Mariné and others. [7] [8]

Milton Glaser American artist

Milton Glaser is an American graphic designer. His designs include the I ❤ NY logo, the psychedelic Bob Dylan poster, and the Brooklyn Brewery logo. In 1954, he also co-founded Push Pin Studios, co-founded New York Magazine with Clay Felker, and established Milton Glaser, Inc. in 1974. His artwork has been featured in exhibits, and placed in permanent collections in many museums worldwide. Throughout his long career, he has designed many posters, publications and architectural designs. He has received many awards for his work, including the National Medal of the Arts award from President Barack Obama in 2009, and was the first graphic designer to receive this award.

Ian Anderson Scottish musician, leader of Jethro Tull

Ian Scott Anderson is a Scottish musician, singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist best known for his work as the lead vocalist, flautist and acoustic guitarist of British rock band Jethro Tull. Anderson plays several other musical instruments, including keyboards, bass guitar, bouzouki, balalaika, saxophone, harmonica, and a variety of whistles. His solo work began with the 1983 album Walk into Light, and since then he has released another five works, including the sequel to the Jethro Tull album Thick as a Brick (1972) in 2012, entitled Thick as a Brick 2.

Bojan Hadzihalilovic is a Sarajevo-based graphic designer and creative director of a Bosnia and Herzegovina design company called Fabrika. He graduated from the Sarajevo Academy of Fine Arts in 1989 and with his colleague Lejla Mulabegovic formed the designer group called TRIO Sarajevo in 1989. From its founding until April 1992, they have designed some 50 important projects, including record covers of some of the most popular rock bands from Bosnia and Herzegovina, numerous design projects at many festivals in the former Yugoslavia, design of books, newspapers and film posters. For their pre-Bosnian war work they have been awarded by Saatchi & Saatchi. They have also taken part in numerous exhibits in the country and abroad.

Alma Selimovic is a queer artist and LGBT*IQA human rights defender. She is most known as one of the organizers of the first Queer Festival in Sarajevo and by her mixed media works through which she explores body, gender and sexuality. Selimovic exhibited her work in over 30 museums and galleries and other venues in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Germany and the United States of America. As of 2017, she lives and works in the US. She identifies as a lesbian and gender-queer person.

MESS (festival)

The MESS International Theatre Festival (MESS) is a theatre festival that takes place annually in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is the oldest living theatre festival in the Balkans, programming international experimental performances and emerging artists. MESS was the largest theatre festival in the Former Yugoslavia and was named one of Living Theatre's international showcases in 1974. It surived the Siege of Sarajevo, during which it hosted directors such as Susan Sontag and Peter Schumann. It organized the first edition of the Sarajevo Film Festival in 1993 and still acts as a collective board member today. Today it is the largest theatre festival in Bosnia and Herzegovina and one of the largest in South-Eastern Europe. In 2009 it expanded its activities to the city of Zenica, which now hosts parts of the regional program.

Beton Fest

Beton Fest is an international 3D street art festival held annually in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is held in July of every year and lasts for five days, bringing in international street artists from all over the world. It was established in 2012 by the arts association Progres in cooperation with the Academy of Fine Arts, Sarajevo. Apart from showcasing 3D street art, it also organizes the Beton Music Stage which holds concerts and open-air parties for the duration of the festival. It is the only 3D street art festival in Southeastern Europe and has hosted many renowned street artists such as Vera Bugatti, Giovanna la Pietra, Tony Cuboliquido, Manuel Bastante and others.

Pop-Up! Sarajevo

Pop-Up! Sarajevo is an international student graphics design and visual communications festival held annually in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The festival was established in 2014 by the Departement of graphics design of the Sarajevo Academy of Fine Arts. It lasts for 7 days. Each year's edition programmes exhibitions, lectures, workshops and film screenings that are focused on the fields of digital illustration, new media, digital animation, video production, motion graphic design, concept art and caricatures.

Al Jazeera Balkans Documentary Film Festival

The Al Jazeera Balkans Documentary Film Festival - AJB DOC is an annual international documentary film festival that is based in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Its first edition was held from 21–25 September 2018. The festival was established by Al Jazeera Balkans in cooperation with the Al Jazeera Media Network and the Doha-based Al Jazeera Media Institute. Al Jazeera Balkans is currently the biggest buyer of television format documentaries in the Former Yugoslavia and annually acquires rights for most of the regional documentary films that are screened during the Sarajevo Film Festival. AJB DOC directly lent its concept from the Aljazeera International Documentary Film Festival, which was founded in 2005 by Jordanian film director and writer, Abbas Arnaout.

Street art in Sarajevo

Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina has gained international notoriety for its diverse range of street art and associated subcultures. The city has a long history of street art that was first tied to various subcultures in the 1970s and 1980s. During the Bosnian war political and anti-war street art was one of the main artistic focal points of the besieged city. Today, Sarajevo is a European center for street art and hosts two international festivals dedicated to the art form.
