San Gabriel High School (SGHS) is a public high school located in Los Angeles County, California and operated by the Alhambra Unified School District. It is almost entirely in the city limits of Alhambra, with a small portion and the school's address in the city limits of San Gabriel. [2] [3] [4]

It traditionally served students residing in San Gabriel although the balance was shifted in 1994 when San Gabriel Unified School District separated itself from Alhambra Unified. Upon separation, SGUSD opened Gabrielino High School to serve its students.[ citation needed ] San Gabriel High School now serves students from portions of Alhambra, San Gabriel, and Rosemead. San Gabriel High School first opened its doors in September 1955. It has been open with a couple of new buildings being built since then. [6]

Academics

Students of San Gabriel High should complete 220 credits in order to graduate. San Gabriel offers 15 Advanced Placement (AP) courses including: English language, English literature, Calculus AB, Calculus BC, Statistics, World History, US History, American Government, Chemistry, Biology, Physics 1, Psychology, Spanish language, Chinese language, and Art History. [7]

San Gabriel High School has been accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges—for the first time in 1966 and most recently in 2022, for a fixed term after each evaluation. [8]

The San Gabriel Cross Country team took 4th in State in 1991, led by a Cross Country champion, Angel Martinez.

School demographics

The school has 2,429 students and 76 full-time teachers. The ethnic composition of San Gabriel High School is 57.1% Asian, 41% Hispanic, 1% White, 1% Two or More Races, 0.2% African American, and 0.1% Pacific Islander. [9]

1988 hostage incident

Jeffrey Lyne Cox, a senior at San Gabriel High School, took an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle to school on April 26, 1988, and held a humanities class of about 60 students hostage for over 30 minutes. Cox held the gun to one student when the teacher doubted Cox would cause harm and stated that he would prove it to her. At that time three students escaped out a rear door and were fired upon. Cox was later tackled and disarmed by another student. A friend of Cox's told the press that Cox had been inspired by the Kuwait Airways Flight 422 hijacking and by the Stephen King novel Rage , [10] which Cox had read over and over again and with which he strongly identified. [11] After the jury deadlocked, Cox pleaded no contest to charges of kidnapping and assault with a deadly weapon—both of which are felony offences. [12] He was sentenced to five years in prison. [13]

San Gabriel Unified School District, also known as SGUSD, is a public school district that serves the community of San Gabriel, California. It is located in the San Gabriel Valley area. SGUSD separated itself from the Alhambra Unified School District. This is a rather small district which has only one middle school and one high school. Del Mar High is a continuation school which provides service to the students who have discipline and/or grade problems or are behind credits to graduation.

Valley Boulevard is a street in Southern California, running east from Los Angeles to Pomona, where it becomes Holt Avenue, and a continuation from Fontana to Colton. Garvey School District is a pre-K-8 school district with headquarters located in the city of Rosemead, California. It operates nine pre-K-6 elementary schools, one pre-K-8 elementary school and two intermediate schools. The district serves more than 6000 students from diverse backgrounds, predominantly Asian and Latin American.

Wilmar was the former name of a then-unincorporated district of San Gabriel Township in the San Gabriel Valley, about eight miles east of the center of Los Angeles. In the 1940 census, Wilmar had a population of 11,590. Wilmar was combined with the unincorporated communities of Garvey and Potrero Heights to become the unincorporated community of South San Gabriel in the early 1950s. It was named for the city of Wilmar, Arkansas by "Arkies" who migrated to the area as a rural counterpart to their roots in Arkansas.

Garvey Avenue is a west-east thoroughfare in the San Gabriel Valley. It is named after Richard Garvey Sr., a former postal horse rider and ranch owner who donated part of his land to create the thoroughfare, which became an important link between Los Angeles and the San Gabriel Valley, especially prior to the establishment of the Interstate Highway System.
