The people in the district are mainly indigenous citizens of Aymara descent. Aymara is the language which the majority of the population (80.88%) learnt to speak in childhood, 18.39% of the residents started speaking using the Spanish language (2007 Peru Census). [3]

Puno is a department and region in southeastern Peru. It is the fifth largest department in Peru, after Cuzco, Madre de Dios, Ucayali, and Loreto. It is bordered by Bolivia on the east, the departments of Madre de Dios on the north, Cusco and Arequipa on the west, Moquegua on the southwest, and Tacna on the south.
