Schendylops oligopus is a species of soil centipede in the family Schendylidae. [1] This species is notable as one of only two species in the order Geophilomorpha known to include centipedes with only 27 pairs of legs, the minimum number recorded in this order. Furthermore, S. oligopus was the first species in this order found to feature so few legs. [2]
This species was first described in 1995 by the biologists Luis Alberto Pereira, Alessandro Minelli, and Francesco Barbieri. The original description of this species is based on a large sample, including a female holotype, a male allotype, nine paratypes (eight females and one male), and fourteen other specimens (thirteen females and one male). All specimens were collected in 1982 or 1983 from the Adolfo Ducke Forest Reserve in Amazonas state in Brazil. Pereira and his coauthors named the species oligopus in light of the small number of legs observed in these specimens: All the females had only 31 pairs of legs, and all three male specimens had only 29 pairs, the minimum number recorded at the time in the order Geophilomorpha and a number then shared by only two other species of centipede. In 2000, Minelli, Pereira, Donatella Foddai, and John G.E. Lewis reported the collection of eleven more specimens (six males and five females) of S. oligopus in 1990. These specimens had the expected number of legs, except for one unusual male with only 27 leg pairs, the first specimen in the order Geophilomorpha recorded with so few legs. [4] S. oligopus remained the only species in this order known to feature so few legs until the discovery of S. ramirezi , another species in the same genus, first described in 2013, with 27 leg pairs in males and 29 pairs in females. [2]
Pereira, Minelli, and Barbieri originally described S. oligopus in 1995 under the name Schendylurus oligopus. [3] In 1997, the American zoologist Richard L. Hoffman and Pereira moved this species to the genus Schendylops when they deemed Schendylurus to be a junior synonym for Schendylops. [5]
All females of this species have 31 pairs of legs, and males usually have 29 leg pairs. In a large sample of 29 males, 35 females, and 13 juveniles of unknown sex, only one male was found to have 27 leg pairs. [4] Females can reach 10 mm in length, and males can reach 8 mm in length. [2] The holotype (preserved in alcohol) is a pale yellowish color. [3]
The species S. oligopus shares a distinctive set of traits with several other species of Schendylops, including S. ramirezi. These features include pore-fields limited to the anterior region of the body, but without a pore-field on the sternite of the first leg-bearing segment. Moreover, the fourth segment of the antenna is similar in length to the contiguous segments. [2] [6]
Although S. oligopus and S. ramirezi share many features, including a similar number of legs, these two species also differ from one another in numerous respects. For example, S. ramirezi features setae on the coxosternite of the first maxillae and a large seta in the middle of the coxosternite of the second maxillae, whereas all these setae are absent in S. oligopus. Furthermore, while both species are notable for their small sizes, S. oligopus is nevertheless larger than S. ramirezi: Females of the species S. ramirezi reach only 7 mm in length, and males reach only 6 mm in length. This species has been found in four locations in Amazonas state in Brazil, including the type locality in the Adolfo Ducke Forest Reserve. [2]
Geophilomorpha is an order of centipedes commonly known as soil centipedes. The name "Geophilomorpha" is from Ancient Greek roots meaning "formed to love the earth." This group is the most diverse centipede order, with 230 genera. These centipedes are found nearly worldwide but are absent in Antarctica and most Arctic regions.

Geophilidae is a family of soil centipedes in the superfamily Geophiloidea and the order Geophilomorpha. In 2014, a phylogenetic analysis based on morphological and molecular data found this family to be polyphyletic. To avoid this polyphyly, authorities dismissed the families Aphilodontidae, Dignathodontidae, Linotaeniidae, and Macronicophilidae, which are now deemed to be junior synonyms for Geophilidae. Authorities also moved some genera from Geophilidae to form the family Zelanophildae in order to avoid the polyphyly of the family Geophilidae. The family Geophilidae now includes more than 650 species in more than 120 genera. This family has a cosmopolitan distribution, with species found almost worldwide.
Mecistocephalidae is a monophyletic family of centipedes in the order Geophilomorpha. It is the only family in the suborder Placodesmata. Most species in this family live in tropical or subtropical regions, but some occur in temperate regions. This family is the third most diverse in the order Geophiliomorpha, with about 170 species, including about 130 species in the genus Mecistocephalus.

Known from a single male specimen measuring 16.2 mm in length, G. persephones has only 29 pairs of legs, one of only two species in the Geophilidae family to feature so few leg pairs.
Ballophilidae is a monophyletic group of centipedes belonging to the order Geophilomorpha and superfamily Himantarioidea. Authorities now dismiss this group as a family, citing phylogenetic analysis, and instead refer to this clade as Ballophilinae, a possible subfamily within the family Schendylidae. Centipedes in this clade differ from others in the family Schendylidae by having bodies tapered toward the anterior tip, short heads, slender forcipules that are well apart, and an undivided lamina for the female gonopods. Centipedes in this clade are found in most tropical regions.

These centipedes range from about 1 cm to about 9 cm in length and have 41 to 113 pairs of legs. The dwarf species Ityphilus donatellae ranges from 8.5 to 11 mm in length and can have as few as 41 leg pairs, the minimum number found in this genus. The large species I. grandis can reach 93 mm in length and have as many as 113 leg pairs, the maximum number found in the clade Ballophilidae.

Mecistocephalus spissus is a species of centipede in the Mecistocephalidae family. The American biologist Horatio Curtis Wood first described this species in 1862 based on type material found in Kauai or Oahu in Hawaii. This centipede has only 45 pairs of legs, the minimum number recorded in the genus Mecistocephalus, and was the first species in this genus to be discovered with such a modest number of legs.
