The Sharm El Sheikh Museum (SSM) is a museum in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt. Located in Airport road, the museum displays a collection of 7,000 artifacts, presenting the Egyptian civilization from prehistoric times to the Modern era. [1] The SSM was officially inaugurated on 31 November 2020. [2]

The museum is considered the first museum of Egyptian antiquities in the city of Sharm El-Sheikh, which is known with beach and leisure tourism. The SSM was established to be a center of cultural and civilizational radiation and a forum for human civilizations, and a tangible addition to the promising tourism in the city, in line with the Ministry’s plan to integrate recreational tourism and cultural tourism. The museum is home to artifacts, models, photographs, manuscripts, oil paintings, artistic artifacts, and antiquities. [1]

Background

The museum covers an area of ​​110,000 square meters. The facility consists of 9 halls, a conference hall, a basement, a number of shops for traditional crafts, an open-air theater, and a number of restaurants. [3] The museum’s display scenario broadly reflects the different aspects of human civilization and culture in general, while shedding light specifically on ancient Egyptian civilization. This is done through a selection of historical objects that were carefully chosen from museum storage rooms. [4] [5]

Museum halls

The Great Hall expresses man and wildlife in ancient Egypt, by displaying a number of paintings representing the Egyptian family in different historical stages. [6] To a number of sacred animals in ancient Egypt, such as cats and scarabs of different shapes and sizes, which were discovered in 2019 in the Saqqara archaeological area. [7] [8]

The museum’s Grand Hall presents a history of humans and wildlife in ancient Egypt, and highlights ancient Egyptian civilization’s preoccupation with science, mathematics, industry, crafts, family life, and love for animals to the point of reverence. To showcase this point, animal the Grand Hall is where animal mummies are displayed. In the Hall of Civilization, displayed the inner and outer coffins of Isetemheb, the wife of the high-priest of AmunPanedjem II, who was herself a priestess of Isis, Min, and Horus in Akhmim. Notable also are papyrus collection, cosmetics,and perfume vessels, the head of a statue of Queen Hatshepsut, and tanagrafigurines depicting women wearing a variety of dresses, in addition to objects that display Sinai’s cultural heritage. Among the most important artifacts in the museum is a rare piece of mosaic from the city of Alexandria dating back to the fourth century BC, a statue of the god "Eros" hunting deer, which is displayed at the entrance to the museum, and another rare statue of the god "Bes" made of incompletely burned clay that is displayed inside the great hall.
