Description

Silver Peak is located in the Sierra Nevada mountain range, 3.2 miles northeast of Ebbetts Pass in the Carson-Iceberg Wilderness, on land managed by Humboldt–Toiyabe National Forest. The nearest town is Markleeville 8.5 mile (13.7 km) to the north and the nearest higher neighbor is Highland Peak 1.63 mile (2.6 km) to the south. [4] Precipitation runoff from this mountain drains into tributaries of the East Fork Carson River. Topographic relief is significant as the summit rises 3,400 feet (1,000 meters) above Noble Canyon in 1.6 mile (2.6 km). The mountain's toponym has been officially adopted by the United States Board on Geographic Names. [3]

Climate

According to the Köppen climate classification system, Silver Peak is located in an alpine climate zone. [6] Most weather fronts originate in the Pacific Ocean, and travel east toward the Sierra Nevada mountains. As fronts approach, they are forced upward by the peaks (orographic lift), causing them to drop their moisture in the form of rain or snowfall onto the range.

The peak is situated 3.9 miles (6.3 km) east of Mount Goddard, and 2.6 miles (4.2 km) south-southeast of Mount Fiske, which is the nearest higher neighbor. Topographic relief is significant as it rises 4,000 feet above Le Conte Canyon in approximately two miles. It is approximately 3.5 miles (5.6 km) southwest of the community of June Lake, 2.0 miles (3.2 km) south of Silver Lake, and 2.25 miles (3.62 km) northwest of San Joaquin Mountain, the nearest higher neighbor. Although it ranks as the 680th-highest summit in California, it ranks 36th-highest of those with at least 500 meters of topographic prominence. Also, there is no higher peak than Highland Peak to the north within the Sierra Nevada. Highland Peak has a subsidiary South Peak, with one-half mile separation between summits. The Pacific Crest Trail traverses the western foot of this mountain, providing an approach option. Precipitation runoff from this mountain drains into tributaries of the East Fork Carson River..
