Sky Void of Stars is the twelfth studio album by Swedish heavy metal band Katatonia. It was released on 20 January 2023 and was generally well received by critics.
In April 2020, Katatonia released their eleventh studio album, City Burials . [3] The band had initially planned on touring in support of the album, but the breakout of the COVID-19 pandemic halted all plans. [3] Upon realizing that this was not a short-term issue, but something that was going to be completely halting their ability to tour, they instead turned to releasing further music. [3] These plans including releasing a new live album Dead Air (2020), a compilation album Mnemosynean (2021), a box set Melancholium (2022), and forging ahead into writing and recording a twelfth studio album. [4] [5]
Work on the album started shortly after the April 2020 release of City Burials. [4] While most Katatonia albums were written as a collaboration between vocalist Jonas Renkse and Anders Nyström, the album, like its predecessor, was written entirely by Renkse. [1] [4] The album is not directly about the COVID pandemic, but rather, the writing sessions acted as a sort of therapy to help Renkse maintain his mental health while living through it. [4] The album's title, Sky Void of Stars, alludes to the centuries old concept that travelers sailing ocean couldn't travel when there aren't any stars lighting the sky and environment; a metaphor of sorts to how they felt "frozen" and "crippled" as a band with an unclear path forward while enduring the COVID pandemic. [5] The title is taken from the lyrics of the track "Author". [5]
The song "Colossal Shade" was inspired by Lick It Up -era of music from the band Kiss; the track was an effort to implement guitar riffs like those found on the respective Kiss album and mold them into Katatonia's own sound. [5] The track "Opaline" was similarly influenced by the music of the Swedish pop rock band Kent in an effort to meld their sound into Katatonia's sound. [5] The main guitar riff for the track "Birds" was originally rejected by Renkse for too closely resembling something from the gothic metal band Paradise Lost, but he later reversed the decision, feeling it was appropriate to use as a bit of a homage to the band. [5] Joel Ekelof of the Swedish progressive metal band Soen recorded vocals for the song "Impermanence. [4] Ekelof and Renkse had intended to collaborate for quite some time, but hadn't found the right way to do it. [5]
Jacob Hansen returned from the City Burial sessions again to mix and master the album, and this time extending his help into the area of music production as well. [4] The album was described as more guitar driven than their prior album, City Burials. [1]
The album's name, Sky Void of Stars, and release date, 20 January 2023, was announced on 26 October 2022. [6] The album was also announced to be their first to be released on record label Napalm Records. [7] The first single, "Atrium" was also released at the time of the announcement in October, [6] [1] while a second single, "Austerity" was released ahead of the album on 2 December 2022. [8] [9] A European and Latin American tour in support of the album is scheduled for early 2023. [6] Napalm Records sold a limited edition cd/blu-ray box containing a Dolby Atmos mix of the entire album, created from session stems and mixed by Bruce Soord of The Pinapple Thief. This mix is also available streaming on Apple Music.
Sky Void of Stars was generally well-received by music critics. Metal Hammer praised the album for its combination and variety of rock and metal elements, concluding that "The only predictable thing about Sky Void Of Stars is how absurdly fucking great it is." [10] Metal Injection concluded that "If you evaluate each song individually on their musical merits, they are all excellent. But what Katatonia has always been able to do, and what they've done again on Sky Void of Stars, is to also build an emotional connection and resonance in their songs that has an exponential effect, making for a sum greater than its parts." Blabbermouth, alluding to the band's transitions through various genre over their career, noted that "Sky Void of Stars is the embodiment of a band that no matter the change in presentation, is still the darkest and most varied in metal. [1] Sputnik Music's staff review praised the album for " manag[ing] to recapture the essence that made them sovereigns of the progressive metal scene, marrying the gloom wizardry they unearthed at the turn of the new millennium with the soothing wisdom that emanates from their latest compositions." [2]

Bloodbath is a Swedish death metal supergroup from Stockholm, formed in 1998. The band has released six full-length albums, two EPs and two DVDs depicting their performances at Wacken Open Air and Bloodstock Open Air. The group consists of Martin Axenrot (ex-Opeth), Anders Nyström (Katatonia), Jonas Renkse and Nick Holmes.
Katatonia is a Swedish heavy metal band formed in Stockholm in 1991 by Jonas Renkse and Anders Nyström. The band started as a studio-only project for the duo, as an outlet for the band's love of death metal. Increasing popularity led them to add more band members for live performances, though outside of the band's founders, the lineup was a constantly changing, revolving door of musicians throughout the 1990s, notably including Mikael Åkerfeldt of the band Opeth for a period. After two death/doom albums, Dance of December Souls (1993) and Brave Murder Day (1996), problems with Renkse's vocal cords coupled with new musical influences led the band away from the screamed vocals of death metal to a more traditional, melodic form of heavy metal music.
Brave Murder Day is the second studio album by Swedish heavy metal band Katatonia, released on 1 August 1996 by Avantgarde Music. The lead vocals on the album are provided by Mikael Åkerfeldt of Opeth, as Katatonia frontman Jonas Renkse was medically unable to perform screamed vocals anymore following health issues that arose from performing the band's debut. It was also the band's first album with second guitarist Fredrik Norrman.
Discouraged Ones is the third studio album by Swedish heavy metal band Katatonia, released on 27 April 1998. This is the only Katatonia album with bassist Micke Oretoft. It is also their last release with Jonas Renkse on drums; on future releases, he was the band's lead vocalist and contributed additional guitar work. According to Renkse, Discouraged Ones had sold roughly 20,000 copies as of 2001.
Tonight's Decision is the fourth studio album by Swedish heavy metal band Katatonia, released in 1999 by Peaceville Records. It was reissued in 2003 with two bonus tracks.

Dance of December Souls is the debut studio album by Swedish heavy metal band Katatonia. It was released on CD in 1993 by No Fashion Records and LP by Helion Records, released in the US in 1999 by Century Black. In 2004, record label Black Lodge reissued the album with all new artwork, but the band has stated on its website that it does not support this release for personal reasons. In 2007, the album was reissued, this time under Peaceville UK with a blue version of the original cover and all five songs from the Jhva Elohim Meth... The Revival EP appended as bonus tracks. In 2010, Svart Records released a double vinyl version, which also included all songs from the EP.
Last Fair Deal Gone Down is the fifth studio album by Swedish heavy metal band Katatonia, released in 2001 by Peaceville Records. The release was the first of a series of four albums done by the band with a stable line up of Jonas Renkse, Anders Nyström, Fredrik Norrman, Mattias Norrman, and Daniel Liljekvist, after years of lineup and role changes with prior albums.

The artwork was designed by Travis Smith and is close to the visual concept for The Great Cold Distance.
October Tide is a Swedish death/doom metal band that was created in 1994 by Katatonia vocalist Jonas Renkse and then-Katatonia guitarist Fred Norrman. Norrman revived the band after leaving Katatonia in 2009.
Dead End Kings is the ninth studio album by Swedish heavy metal band Katatonia. It was released on 27 August 2012 in Europe and 28 August in the United States through Peaceville Records. Like all Katatonia releases, the album was written primarily by founding members Jonas Renkse and Anders Nyström. The band went through a number of lineup changes, making the album the first to feature bassist Niklas Sandin, the only album to feature second guitarist Per Eriksson, and the last to feature drummer Daniel Liljekvist.
The Fall of Hearts is the tenth studio album by Swedish heavy metal band Katatonia. It was released on 20 May 2016. The album, mostly written and produced by founding members Jonas Renkse and Anders Nyström, was the first to also feature new members Daniel Moilanen and Roger Öjersson. The album moved in a more progressive direction than prior albums, and was generally well received by critics. Two singles were released in promotion of the album, "Old Heart Falls", and "Serein".
Kocytean is the ninth EP by Swedish heavy metal band Katatonia. The album was released on April 19, 2014, as part of the 2014 iteration of Record Store Day. The release consists of a collection of six B-side songs from their prior three albums at the time – The Great Cold Distance (2006), Night is the New Day (2009), and Dead End Kings (2012). While given a limited release, it was still generally praised by critics.
"Serein" is a song by Swedish heavy metal band Katatonia. It is the second single off of their tenth studio album The Fall of Hearts. The song title alludes to the concept of raining without clouds being visible.
