The South Australian Music Awards, also known as SA Music Awards, commonly SAM Awards, formerly Fowler's Live Music Awards (FLMA), are annual awards that exist to recognise, promote and celebrate excellence in the South Australian contemporary music industry. They take place in Adelaide, South Australia every November. The venue has varied over the years.
The inaugural South Australian Music Awards took place in November 2015, after having been known as the Fowler's Live Music Awards (FLMA) from 2012 to 2014, when custodianship was handed to Music SA. [1] Fowler's Live (since 2018 and as of 2021 [update] Lion Arts Factory) was a popular Adelaide live music venue. Major partners are as of 2019 [update] the South Australian Government's Music Development Office (in the Department of Innovation & Skills [2] ), The Music, Moshtix & Australian Hotels Association. All applicants must have commercially released the entered work between the eligible period of 1 August to 31 July (of the award year). All applicants must have at least 50% of their band members residing in South Australia or they must identify and promote themselves as being South Australian. All applicants should be registered with APRA AMCOS. All entered works must be original compositions. [5]
People's choice awards are 100% voted for by the public via themusic.com.au. For the Industry and Major awards, a judging panel consisting of ten local and five national industry peers is selected each year. The panel includes a diverse range of gender, age and culture. [6]
The 2012 Fowler's Live Music Awards took place at Fowlers on 1 November 2012 to "recognise success and achievement over the past 12 months [and] celebrate the great diversity of original live music" in South Australia. 20 industry and five public voted awards were handed out. The 2014 Fowler's Live Music Awards took place on 13 November 2014. Organiser Peter Darwin said "It is humbling to see the level of support both within the industry and from the music loving public for the FLMA's. The 2015 South Australian Music Awards took place on 10 November 2015. The Ryan Freeman Live Music Award, created in honour of Ryan Freeman, a live music fan who died in 2009, was awarded to Kelly Menhennett who also received $4000 to assist her career. 2015 marks Music SA's inaugural custodianship of the rebranded awards. The 2019 South Australian Music Awards took place in Bonython Hall at the University of Adelaide on 22 November 2019. Kelly Menhennett, Jimblah, Stellie, Jess Day, Horror My Friend and Electric Fields gave live performances. [15]
There were a few changes in 2019. The APRA/AMCOS Emily Burrows Award, instituted in 2001 in memory of Emily Burrows, a former APRA AMCOS membership representative and compliance officer and awarded to a South Australian artist or band, [16] was included in the ceremony. The "World Music" category was replaced with "Soul/Funk/RnB", and the "Best Engineer" category was split into "Best Live Engineer" and "Best Studio Engineer". [15] The winners are listed below. [8]

Falls Music & Arts Festival is a multi-day music festival held annually in Byron Bay and Fremantle, Australia over the New Year's Eve and January period. The festival hosts contemporary music performances, dance, comedy, theatre, circus, cabaret, and other art forms. The Adelaide 500, since 2023 known as VAILO Adelaide 500 after its chief sponsor, is an annual motor racing event for Supercars held on the streets of the east end of Adelaide, South Australia between 1999 and 2020 and again from 2022. The event is still colloquially known as the Clipsal 500 or simply "Clipsal" after its former longtime sponsor. Takudzwa Victoria Rosa "Tkay" Maidza is a Zimbabwean-born Australian singer-songwriter and hip hop artist from Adelaide, South Australia. She has been nominated for and won many awards, and released two albums: Tkay (2016) and Sweet Justice (2023). She collaborated with Flume on her 2023 single "Silent Assassin".
Tkay is the debut studio album by Australian singer and rapper Tkay Maidza. It was released on 28 October 2016 by Dew Process and peaked at number 20 on the ARIA Charts.
Moutaiz Al-Obaidi, known professionally as Motez, is an Australian record producer, musician, installation artist and DJ. Motez was a refugee born in Iraq and moved to Adelaide in 2006. Motez's Song "The Future" featuring Antony and Cleopatra was certified Platinum in Australia. He has won several South Australian Music Awards for Best Solo Artist (2021) and Most Popular Electronic Artist
The Big Pineapple Music Festival is held annually at the Big Pineapple Landmark, in Woombye, Queensland, Australia. The festival features a range of artists from a variety of genres and first occurred on 21 April 2013 with over 8,000 tickets purchased. The festival was initially developed by the new Big Pineapple landmark owners, in an attempt to pull the business out of bankruptcy. From 2016-2019, the festival has repeatedly sold out, with the 2019 Big Pineapple Music Festival reporting a record attendance of 16,000 people. The Big Pineapple Music Festival has consecutively won the ‘People’s Choice Award Festival of the Year’ for 2018 and 2019 at the Queensland Music Awards.
Elsy Wameyo, also known as ELSY, is a Kenyan Australian singer-songwriter and rapper, whose style ranges from hip hop to the fusion of traditional African music with contemporary rap and R&B. Based in Adelaide, South Australia, Wameyo was awarded Young Kenyan of the Year in 2018, and won People's Choice Best Hip Hop Award at the annual South Australian Music Awards in 2019.
