Sphyrion is a genus of marine copepods in the family Sphyriidae.
The genus Sphyrion was erected by French zoologist Georges Cuvier in volume three of the second edition of Le Règne Animal , published in 1830. [1] [2] The name Sphyrion appears to be derived from the Greek word σφυρίον, meaning "little hammer". [3] [4] Cuvier created the genus to accommodate the species Chondracanthus lisse - first described in 1824 by Jean René Constant Quoy and Joseph Paul Gaimard and combined by Cuvier as Sphyrion lisse - which is now considered a synonym of Sphyrion laevigatum . [2] [3] [4] Three species are currently recognised. [1] [5]
