Spring Breakers (Music from the Motion Picture) is the soundtrack to the 2012 film Spring Breakers , released through Big Beat Records and Warner Records on March 19, 2013. The album consisted of an original score jointly composed by Skrillex and Cliff Martinez along with songs from electronic dance and southern hip hop artists.
Cliff Martinez was recommended to Korine by the film's editor Douglas Crise who edited much of his themes as placeholder in the film. During their interaction, Korine said to Martinez, "Forget about the script. The script is just a starting point. You have to see the film." [1] He eventually watched the film during the edit and agreed to be a part of the film. [2] Korine sent links of Skrillex's songs to music supervisor Randall Poster. [3] Several of his songs were included in the film, which Martinez described that he came onboard much before his involvement. He was instrumental in Skrillex being involved as he needed a trance-like experience to the film and his music being representative of that, and further added that beside the pop elements, his music also had a "bombastic and brutal electronic aspect". [4] Despite, Skrillex's busy schedule, Korine interacted with the former through FaceTime discussing the musical process and eventually agreed on his involvement. [1] Skrillex and Martinez jointly wrote the film's incidental music and provided dramatic underscore, despite their distinctive approaches and styles on electronic music. [5] [6] James Franco performed a rap portion for the film's original song "Hangin' with Da Dopeboys". [7]
The track list of the film's soundtrack was first revealed through IndieWire magazine on February 18, 2013. [8] It was exclusively made available for online streaming on March 6, 2013 through Pitchfork, [9] [10] prior to the digital distribution on March 12 and through CDs on March 19. The review aggregator website Metacritic assigned Spring Breakers (Music from the Motion Picture), a score of 68 out of 100, indicating "generally favorable reviews". [21]
In a 3.5-star review, David Jeffries of AllMusic described the soundtrack as "a weird and wonderful set, as hyped-up, hallucinatory, and hot as the film that either oozed or sweated it out". [14] Writing for Consequence of Sound , Amanda Kollner assigned a "C−" score to the album, stating "The album marries moments of both excess and restraint, and the dance between Skrillex and Martinez makes the ebb and flow of the music match that of the plot: a successful score." [15] Benjamin Boles of Now wrote "The contrast between the adrenaline rushes and nihilistic machismo and the score’s cold serenity is strangely intoxicating." [16]
Corban Goble of Pitchfork assigned 7.6 (out of 10) to the album, summarising "Given its relatively seamless mesh of spiky, aggro party music and the more contemplative electronic moments created by Martinez and Moore, Spring Breakers is the rare soundtrack that covers both extremes and makes it work as a whole." [17] Adam Lukach of RedEye gave three out of four stars, describing the music as "a whimsical post-rock aesthetic that descends into mayhem and gloom at opportune moments". [18] Jon Dolan of Rolling Stone described the album as "refined, minimalist, often quite lovely and even chiller than Trent Reznor's Social Network score". [19] Sean Daly of Tampa Bay Times called the album as a "mesmerising mix". [20] Ron Harris of San Diego Union-Tribune called it as "a decent soundtrack and a good sampler of what the spring break set is doing". [22]
A critic from Vice described the film's soundtrack as the best trap album for the mainstream audience, further stating that "This movie and soundtrack both have a vested interest in rap culture, but given trap music's tendency to indulge and borrow from actual rap culture, the prominent placement of trap rap-aping white dudes feels appropriate." [23] Scott Interrante of PopMatters also opined on the use of trap music in the film, while also summarising "The various ways the music is employed throughout the film helps confuse, disorient, or ground us, and the play between diegetic and non-diegetic music brings us in and out of the characters’ perspective, all amounting to a wonderfully unsettling, intriguing, and unforgettable experience." Warren Ellis is an Australian musician and composer. He is a member of the rock groups Dirty Three and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. He performed with the band Grinderman until its disbandment in 2013, and has composed film scores with long-time friend, collaborator and band-mate Nick Cave. Ellis plays the violin, piano, accordion, bouzouki, guitar, flute, mandolin, mandocello and viola. He has been a member of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds since 1994.
Harmony Korine is an American filmmaker, actor, photographer, artist, and author. His methods feature an erratic, loose and transgressive aesthetic, exploring taboo themes and incorporating experimental techniques, and works with art, music, fashion and advertising.
Cliff Robert Martinez is an American musician and composer. Early in his career, Martinez was known as a drummer notably with the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Captain Beefheart. Since the 1990s, he has worked primarily as a film score composer, writing music for Spring Breakers, The Foreigner, and multiple films by Steven Soderbergh and Nicolas Winding Refn.
Chromatics were an American electronic music band from Portland, Oregon, formed in 2001. The band's final line-up consisted of Ruth Radelet, Adam Miller, Nat Walker, and Johnny Jewel. The band originally featured a trademark sound indebted to punk and lo-fi that was described as "noisy" and "chaotic". After numerous lineup changes, which left guitarist Adam Miller as the sole original member, the band began releasing material on the Italians Do It Better record label in 2007, with their style streamlined into an Italo disco-influenced sound.

It is the second track from his second extended play, Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites, released on October 22, 2010, through Mau5trap and Big Beat. The song began as a test for the Native Instruments synthesizer FM8 and was the first written for the EP. A dubstep track, critics noted the contrast between the beginning of the song and its drop. In 2012, it was used in multiple media and won the Best Dance Recording category at the 54th Grammy Awards. The song charted in multiple countries and received a double platinum certification in Australia, Sweden, and the United States (RIAA). It has since been named as an influential electronic dance music (EDM) song that brought dubstep to a mainstream audience.
Spring Breakers is a 2012 American crime comedy film written and directed by Harmony Korine and starring James Franco, Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson, Rachel Korine, and Gucci Mane. Sonny John Moore, known professionally as Skrillex, is an American DJ, record producer, and singer. Raised in Northeast Los Angeles and Northern California, he began his career in 2004 as the lead vocalist of the post-hardcore band From First to Last. He recorded their first two studio albums with the band, Dear Diary, My Teen Angst Has a Bodycount (2004) and Heroine (2006), before leaving to pursue a solo career in 2007. He began his first tour as a solo artist in late 2007. After recruiting a new band lineup, Moore joined the Alternative Press Tour to support bands such as All Time Low and the Rocket Summer, and appeared on the cover of Alternative Press's annual "100 Bands You Need to Know" issue.
Drive (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) is the soundtrack album to the 2011 American film of the same name. Initially, Johnny Jewel was hired to compose the film's score, but producers ultimately hired Cliff Martinez to replace Jewel. The album consists of songs which is a blend of electronic, ambient and retro music.
Horst Christian Simco, known professionally as Riff Raff, is an American rapper from Katy, Texas. He was originally managed by Swishahouse co-founder OG Ron C in 2011. After initially signing with rapper Soulja Boy's record label Stacks on Deck Entertainment, Simco signed with producer Diplo's record label Mad Decent to release his debut studio album, Neon Icon (2014). Despite lukewarm critical and commercial response, it mildly entered the Billboard 200 along with his second album Peach Panther (2016), which was released by Warner Records. Prior to its release, Simco entered a US$4 million joint partnership with Stampede Management and BMG for his Neon Nation label and production company. The joint deal fell apart in the wake of legal disputes with the publication of the 2012 film Spring Breakers.
Io Echo was an American indie rock band formed in Los Angeles by Ioanna Gika and Leopold Ross. Their debut album, Ministry of Love, was released in 2013 on Iamsound in the US. Previously, the band released the single "While You Were Sleeping" in 2010 and a self-titled EP in 2012 on the same label. Io Echo's style combines rock music compositions with instruments such as a Japanese koto harp and Chinese violins. Io Echo were hand-picked by Trent Reznor to open for Nine Inch Nails at the last show of their Wave Goodbye Tour. Io Echo have also composed the score to the Harmony Korine and James Franco film project Rebel. In 2013, the band played Coachella, Lollapalooza, South by South West and toured with Bloc Party and Garbage. As well as recording and touring, after seeing them perform live Jeffrey Deitch asked the band to curate an audio visual festival at the Museum of Modern Art Los Angeles. Io Echo named it PLAY MOCA and played alongside Salem, Cults, Zola Jesus, Active Child, and more.
Thor: The Dark World is the film score for the Marvel Studios film, Thor: The Dark World by Brian Tyler, which was released by Hollywood Records in Europe on October 28, 2013. The album was released digitally in the United States on November 5, followed by a CD release on November 12, 2013. It is the first soundtrack in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to feature the "Marvel Studios Fanfare".
