Gameplay

The gameplay of Starfield is expanded in this expansion. Players face new enemy factions, creatures, and bosses, and gain access to new weapons, armor, and equipment, as well as crafting and research materials. The expansion expands upon the base game's exploration mechanics, adding new star systems, planets, and points of interest, each with new environments, and challenges. [2] Players engage in space combat, ground exploration, and dialogue-driven quests. A notable addition is the car mech system, which combines the speed and maneuverability of cars with the combat capabilities of mechs. [3] These vehicles can be customized with various weapons, armor, and components to suit different playstyles. The Shattered Space Edition includes exclusive car mech skins, weapon blueprints, and consumables. [4]

Starfield: Shattered Space is set on a single planet, contrasting with the base game Starfield, which features multiple planets and star systems. This design choice allows for a more focused and detailed exploration experience. [5] The expansion emphasizes a dense and intricate environment, providing an immersive experience centered around a single locale. The level design in Shattered Space is consistent with earlier Bethesda titles, featuring intricate and expansive environments that facilitate thorough exploration. The design includes detailed interiors and diverse terrains, maintaining elements seen in Bethesda's previous games while integrating new features specific to the expansion. [6] [7]

Plot

Plot centers around a new faction, House Va'ruun, and their role in the broader Starfield universe. Players will investigate a mysterious anomaly that has disrupted space-time, creating new and perilous regions. [8] The expansion delves deeper into the lore of the Starfield universe, providing additional context for existing characters and factions, and introducing new characters who play significant roles in the story. [9]

Development

Development of Shattered Space began shortly after the release of Starfield. The expansion was announced on June 11, 2023, [10] and is scheduled for release on September 30, 2024. Creative director Todd Howard stated that the studio plans to release an annual story expansion pack for Starfield every year. [11]

Developed by Bethesda Game Studios using the Creation Engine 2, the expansion focuses on enhancing the core gameplay experience while maintaining consistency with the base game's aesthetic and mechanics. Significant effort was put into designing the car mech system to ensure it integrated well with existing gameplay elements. [12]
