Sugarloaf is a small coastal locality in the Shire of Colac Otway, Victoria, Australia. [2] In the 2011 census, the population of Sugarloaf was too low to separately report; however in November 2014 the Victorian Electoral Commission recorded 10 enrolled voters in Sugarloaf, living in 9 properties. The Shire of Colac Otway is a local government area in the Barwon South West region of Victoria, Australia, located in the south-western part of the state. It covers an area of 3,433 square kilometres (1,325 sq mi) and at the 2016 Census had a population of almost 21,000. It includes the towns of Apollo Bay, Beeac, Beech Forest, Birregurra, Colac, Cressy, Forrest, Johanna, Kennett River, Lavers Hill, Warrion and Wye River. It was formed in 1994 from the amalgamation of the City of Colac, Shire of Colac, Shire of Otway and part of the Shire of Heytesbury.

The locality is centred on a 30m high sand dune along the Great Ocean Road, and derives its name from an observation that it looked like a sugarloaf. [5] [6] [7] [8] It sits at the mouth of the Sugarloaf Creek, and fronts onto a cove known locally as Onion Bay. [9] [10] Sugarloaf is completely surrounded on land by the larger locality of Wongarra. [11]
The Great Ocean Road is an Australian National Heritage listed 243-kilometre (151 mi) stretch of road along the south-eastern coast of Australia between the Victorian cities of Torquay and Allansford. Built by returned soldiers between 1919 and 1932 and dedicated to soldiers killed during World War I, the road is the world's largest war memorial. Winding through varying terrain along the coast and providing access to several prominent landmarks, including the Twelve Apostles limestone stack formations, the road is an important tourist attraction in the region.
A sugarloaf was the usual form in which refined sugar was produced and sold until the late 19th century, when granulated and cube sugars were introduced. A tall cone with a rounded top was the end product of a process in which dark molasses was refined into white sugar. Molasses was a rich raw sugar that was imported from sugar-growing regions such as the Caribbean and Brazil.
Wongarra is a coastal locality in the Shire of Colac Otway, Victoria, Australia. In the 2016 census, Wongarra had a population of 37.
A former Redemptionist Fathers monastery is located at Sugarloaf. After its closure, it operated as short-term accommodation for people living with mental illness through Mind Australia. The property was sold in 2012, and has since operated as the Seacroft holiday accommodation. [12] [13] The "Stephanie's at Onion Bay" holiday apartments are also located at Sugarloaf. [6]
