Guangzhou, previously romanized as Canton or Kwangchow, is the capital and largest city of Guangdong province in southern China. Located on the Pearl River about 120 km (75 mi) northwest of Hong Kong and 145 km (90 mi) north of Macau, Guangzhou has a history of over 2,200 years and was a major terminus of the Silk Road.
Hakka forms a language group of varieties of Chinese, spoken natively by the Hakka people in parts of Southern China, Taiwan, some diaspora areas of Southeast Asia and in overseas Chinese communities around the world.

The Guangzhou Broadcasting Network, also known as GZBN, is a municipally-owned television network in Guangzhou, Guangdong, People's Republic of China. The television department made its first broadcast on 10 January 1988, while radio department made its first broadcast on 1 December 1991. In July 2010, the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Guangzhou Committee, in a written proposal to mayor of Guangzhou Wan Qingliang, suggested increasing Mandarin programming on Guangzhou Television's main and news channels. The proposal sparked widespread controversy, met with fierce criticism in native Cantonese-speaking cities including Guangzhou and Hong Kong, which eventually triggered a mass protest in the former city. In a formal response, Guangzhou TV rejected the proposal, citing "historic causes and present demands" as reasons for Cantonese-Mandarin bilingualism.
The Southern Media Corporation (SMC) is a television network based in Guangzhou, Guangdong. It was found on 18 January 2004 between the merge of Guangdong Television (GDTV) and Southern Television (TVS). At the same time the television network expanded its service to Hong Kong, Macau and North America to compete with Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB) and Asia Television (aTV), other major Cantonese language TV networks.
The Guangdong National Language Regulations is a set of laws enacted by the Guangdong provincial government in the People's Republic of China in 2012 to promote the use of Standard Mandarin Chinese in broadcast and print media at the expense of the local Chinese varieties of Cantonese, Hakka and Teochew. It has also been labelled a "pro-Mandarin, anti-Cantonese" legislation (廢粵推普、推普廢粵). The law was signed and came into effect on 1 March 2012.
