Temple Hall was a cargo motor ship that was built in Scotland in 1954. She was later renamed Pantelis in 1969 and then again as Telamon in 1977.
In 1981 Telamon sprang a leak in a storm and was beached on Lanzarote in the Canary Islands to prevent her sinking. A subsequent storm broke the wreck in two, and the forward part sank.
The aft part of the wreck remained above water, forming a local landmark and sea mark for more than four decades. Work to dismantle the wreck in situ began in 2022. The work was indefinitely suspended in mid-2023.
Caledon Shipbuilding & Engineering Company built the ship in Dundee as yard number 489. She was launched on 24 September 1953 [1] and completed in February 1954. She was a three-island general cargo ship, with her main superstructure amidships. Her length was 458 ft 0 in (139.6 m) overall and 436.2 ft (133.0 m) between perpendiculars. Her beam was 58 ft 8 in (17.9 m), her depth was 34.9 ft (10.6 m) and her draught was 26 ft 11+1⁄4 in (8.21 m). Her tonnages were 8,003 GRT, 4,584 NRT and 10,405 DWT. [2] [3]
She had a single screw, driven by a four-cylinder two-stroke diesel engine that was built by Vickers-Armstrongs of Barrow-in-Furness [2] and gave her a speed of 12+1⁄2 knots (23.2 km/h). [4]
Caledon built a sister ship, Temple Main, for the same customer. [5] She was launched on 22 November 1957 and completed in April 1958. [6]
Her first owner was the Temple Steam Ship Company, which had a fleet of tramp ships whose names all began with "Temple" and were managed by Lambert Brothers Ltd. Her owners registered her at London. Her UK official number was 186015 and her call sign was GQZG. [7] [3]
In 1969 the Temple Steam Ship Co sold Temple Hall and Temple Main to different Greek buyers. [6] Demetrios P Margaronis bought Temple Hall, renamed her Pantelis, and registered her in Piraeus. A year later he sold her on to the Compañia Naviera Para Sud América SA. This company was registered Panama, but kept Pantelis registered in Piraeus. [8]
In 1977 the Telamon Maritime Company SA acquired Pantelis, renamed her Telamon, and appointed a Greek company, Armour Shipping Inc, to manage her. [8] When IMO numbers were introduced, Telamon became IMO 5354896. [9]
In October 1981, Telamon was en route from San-Pédro and Abidjan in Ivory Coast to Thessaloniki with a cargo of logs. On 31 October she was in the strait of La Bocayna between the Canary Islands of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote when she developed a leak in one of her holds in a heavy storm. Her crew operated her bilge pump, but the water level in the hold continued to rise. [8]
Telamon's captain, Manuele Avtigromm, contacted the harbour master at Los Mármoles, Arrecife, via VHF radio, requesting emergency assistance. The harbour master, Antonion Sivera, had the ship manoeuvered with the aid of two lines attached to the shore, and grounded on the soft beach in the Las Caletas area of the port, near the DISA oil tanks. This saved Telemon from sinking, and also prevented her from accidentally blocking the harbour. [8]
Telemon's bunkers contained 260 tonnes of heavy fuel oil and 60 tonnes of diesel fuel. On 1 November, technicians from an environmental organisation flew from London to Lanzarote with equipment to contain any leak and disperse any oil if it escaped from the wreck into the water. Days later a Cepsa coaster, the 851 GRT Mayorga, came alongside and discharged the oil. Thereafter, Telamon's cargo of timber was discharged and brought ashore. [8]
A company considered refloating Telamon, but the cost was estimated at 100,000,000 Spanish pesetas, so the wreck was left in situ. [8] A subsequent storm broke the back of the wreck forward of the main superstructure amidships. The bow section changed position and is submerged. [10] Divers explored and videoed this part of the wreck in 2010. [8] The wreck remained at 28°58′32.6″N13°31′21.5″W / 28.975722°N 13.522639°W , visible from the Avenida de los Corales. The stern out was of the water, and the main superstructure amidships remained intact. [11]
In 2014 the Las Palmas Port Authority authorised a local company, Recuperadora Lanzaroteña, to dismantle and scrap the wreck, but work did not begin. [8] In 2019 the Spanish Ministry of Defence authorised the wreck's removal, and the Junta Delegada de Enajenaciones y Liquidadora de Material de Canarias ("Delegated Board of Disposals and Liquidator of Material of the Canary Islands", or JDELMCANAR) issued an invitation to tender for contractors to bid for the contract. [12] Recuperadora Lanzaroteña was the only company that submitted a bid. [13] JDELMCANAR and the Spanish Navy initially accepted the bid, but in January 2020 withdrew acceptance because of concerns about Recuperadora Lanzaroteña's tax arrangements and authorisation for waste management. [14]
The Navy then issued a new invitation to tender, [15] and in October 2021 awarded a new contract to Recuperadora Lanzaroteñas, [16] which began dismantling the ship in September 2022. [17] The dismantling work was suspended indefinitely in June 2023. [18]
Alan-A-Dale was a cargo motor ship that was built in Denmark in 1938 as Nordvest. In the Second World War the United States requisitioned her in 1941 and renamed her Alan-A-Dale. In December 1944 she was sunk by a German submarine off the coast of the Netherlands.
Antonio López was a merchant steamship that was built in Scotland in 1882 for the Spanish Compañía Transatlántica Española (CTE). A United States Navy auxiliary cruiser sank her in the Spanish–American War when she was trying to run the US blockade to supply materiél to the Spanish garrison on Puerto Rico. She is now the only known Spanish shipwreck in US waters from the war. Her wreck site, in 1,700 feet (520 m) of water off Dorado, Puerto Rico, was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1997.
SS Cantabria was a Spanish-owned cargo steamship that was built in 1919 in Canada and sunk in 1938 in a naval action in the Spanish Civil War in the North Sea. She was built as War Chief, renamed Alfonso Pérez shortly after she was built, and renamed Cantabria during the Spanish Civil War.
Type N3-S ships were a Maritime Commission small coastal cargo ship design to meet urgent World War II shipping needs, with the first of the 109 N3, both steam and diesel, type hulls delivered in December 1942.
MV Macdhui was a steel-hulled passenger and cargo motor ship built by Barclay Curle & Company at the Clydeholm Yard, Whiteinch, Scotland for Burns, Philp & Company, Limited, Sydney NSW, Australia. She was launched on 23 December 1930 and completed during March 1931. She operated with the company's Burns, Philp Line with service to Papua and New Guinea. She was sunk in 1942, as a result of damage suffered by being hit by bombs from Japanese aircraft, near Port Moresby.
MV Herstein was a 5100 gross register ton freighter launched in 1938 at Copenhagen. She was involved in the unsuccessful search for survivors from HMAS Sydney in November 1941, and was destroyed at Rabaul in 1942.
Windsor Castle was a wooden-hulled, three-masted sailing ship that was built in England in 1857 and wrecked off the coast of Cape Colony in 1884.
Ulysses was a 332 GRT coastal trading vessel that was built in 1941 as Empire Creek by J Pollock & Sons, Faversham, United Kingdom. She was built for the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT). Empire Creek survived being bombed shortly after entering service. In 1946, she was sold into merchant service and renamed Springcreek. Further sales in 1948 and 1951 saw her named Goldcreek and Milborne respectively. In 1964, she was sold to Greece and renamed Georgios. In 1978, she was sold to Panama and renamed Ulysses, serving until she ran aground near Naples, Italy in 1979 and was wrecked.
MV Empire Cross was a motor tanker that was built in England in 1945. She was launched as an Empire ship for the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT). In 1946 she exploded and sank in Haifa in Palestine, killing 25 of her crew.

SS Ithaka is a wrecked steam freighter and landmark on the coast of Hudson Bay near Churchill, Manitoba. Originally built as the lake freighter Frank A. Augsbury for the Canadian George Hall Coal & Shipping Corporation in 1922, she went on to sail for a variety of different owners in different locations being renamed to Granby in 1927, Parita II in 1948, Valbruna in 1951, Lawrencecliffe Hall in 1952, Federal Explorer in 1955 and finally Ithaka in 1960, before being wrecked later that year.
MV Sebastiano Veniero, formerly MV Jason, was a 6,310 GRT cargo and passenger motor ship that was built in Monfalcone, Italy in 1940. In 1941 she was requisitioned by Germany. On 9 December, 1941 she was damaged by a Royal Navy submarine in the Mediterranean Sea, killing at least 300 UK and Dominion prisoners of war, and possibly many more. She did not sink but was beached on the coast of the Peloponnese, where she was torpedoed again a week later and became a total loss.

As in the rest of Spain, the majority religion in the Canary Islands is the Catholic Church. The Catholic religion has been the majority since the Conquest of the Canary Islands in the fifteenth century. This religion would largely replace the Canarian aboriginal religion through the prohibition of the latter and syncretism. According to a survey conducted in 2019, Canary Islands is the fifth autonomous community in Spain with the highest percentage of people who declare themselves to be Catholics after the Region of Murcia, Extremadura, Galicia, Aragon, and Castile and León. 76.7% of the population is Catholic.
SS Reina Victoria-Eugenia was a steam ocean liner and mail ship launched in 1912 in England and operated by the Compañía Transatlántica Española (CTE). She and her sister ship Infanta Isabel de Borbon represented a significant modernisation of CTE's fleet of ageing and obsolescent ships.
