The Philly Specials are an American musical group formed by three football players from the Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League: offensive linemen Lane Johnson, Jason Kelce, and Jordan Mailata. [1] They are known for recording three albums of Christmas music with the proceeds being donated to charity. [2] The group was named for the Philly Special trick play used by the Eagles to score a touchdown in Super Bowl LII in 2018. [1]

The Philly Specials' albums have been produced by Charlie Hall, drummer for the War on Drugs, with Philadelphia Eagles executive Connor Barwin as executive producer. [3] Their albums have featured numerous guest performers. The Philadelphia Eagles have been represented on the albums by other players such as A. J. Brown, Jordan Davis, Nakobe Dean, Landon Dickerson, Brandon Graham, Jalen Hurts, and Haason Reddick; offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland; general manager Howie Roseman; and play-by-play announcer Merrill Reese. [4] [5] Among the musical artists who have appeared on the Philly Specials' albums are Eric Bazilian and Rob Hyman (of the Hooters), Patti LaBelle, Amos Lee, Stevie Nicks, and Boyz II Men. Jason Kelce and his brother Travis Kelce of the Kansas City Chiefs performed a duet version of "Fairytale of New York", rewritten as "Fairytale of Philadelphia", on the group's second album. [5] The song reached No. 1 on two of Billboard magazine's specialty charts, Rock Digital Song Sales and Holiday Digital Song Sales. [8]

The group's 2024 album, A Philly Special Christmas Party , has been announced as being their last. [2] It reached No. 1 on Billboard's Independent Albums chart, selling 32,000 copies in its first week of release, of which 22,000 copies were on vinyl. [9] This marked the biggest sales week for any holiday album on vinyl since Nielsen SoundScan began keeping records in 1991. [9]

One month after its release, the album peaked at No. 13 on Billboard magazine's special, year-end, weekly Christmas Albums sales chart.

"Sleigh Ride" is a light orchestra standard composed by Leroy Anderson. He formed the idea for the piece during a heat wave in July 1946, and finished it in February 1948. Its first performance was by the Boston Pops Orchestra, with Arthur Fiedler conducting, on May 4, 1948. Anderson also made arrangements for wind band and piano.

The song describes Dominick, a donkey who helps Santa Claus bring presents to children in Italy due to the reindeer, despite their flight, being unable to climb the mountainous terrain. The song was re-released onto Amazon on September 26, 2011, on Dexterity Records. The spelling of "Dominick" was modified to "Dominic" for the re-release. It was included in Volume 2 of the Ultimate Christmas Album series produced by Collectables Records and on the Christmas compilation album Merry Xmas 2011 by Cinquenta Musica.

Top Album Sales is a music chart published by Billboard magazine starting in May 1991, and has existed in its current form since December 2014. It is a weekly chart documenting the best-selling albums on a weekly basis in the United States. Up until December 2014, this had been documented by the Billboard 200 chart, but that chart was altered to factor in music streaming by accounting for album-equivalent units in its tallies to document the effect of the rise of music streaming outlet such as Apple Music and Spotify. Starting in the Top Album Sales chart's debut week of May 25, 1991, Billboard began tabulating charts with electronically monitored piece count information from Soundscan, now known as Luminate. During the week of December 6, 2014, the chart switched to a methodology that blends album sales with track equivalent album units and streaming equivalent album units. Former Eagles linebacker Connor Barwin served as executive producer. Johnson, Kelce and Mailata returned to record their second studio album, A Philly Special Christmas Special, which was released on December 1, 2023.

A sequel to A Philly Special Christmas, the album consist of covers of classic Christmas songs, and was released by Vera Y Records on December 1, 2023. It features appearances by Amos Lee, Patti LaBelle, The Philly Special Children's Choir, Waxahatchee, Howie Roseman, Jordan Davis, Travis Kelce, and The Silver Ages. Proceeds from the album are donated to the Children's Crisis Treatment Center and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. The album raised more than $3 million.

A Philly Special Christmas Party is the third and final studio album from The Philly Specials, a vocal trio composed of Philadelphia Eagles offensive linemen Lane Johnson, Jason Kelce, and Jordan Mailata. The album was released on November 22, 2024 by Vera Y Records. Proceeds from the album will fund an initiative to gift every student in the Philadelphia public school system a present. The album featured appearances by Stevie Nicks, Boyz II Men, Travis Kelce, Kylie Kelce, Devon Gilfillian, Immanuel Wilkins and Mt. Joy.
