The Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame is a nonprofit organization in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania that was established in May 2002 to honor individuals and groups who are either area natives who became prominent in the field of sports or who became prominent in the field of sports in the region. [1] [2]

Contents

The Hall of Fame's address is 2701 Grant Avenue in Philadelphia.

From 2004 to 2010, the organization also presented an annual Pride of Philadelphia Award to a team or individual. [3]

Requirements

Individuals, Teams, Venues, Events, and Organizations are all eligible. Generally they must have gained national prominence as individuals or venues while attached to the Philadelphia region, or won a championship as a team from the Philadelphia region. Individuals are eligible for induction five years after retirement from a playing career. When an individual dies, he or she becomes immediately eligible. [4]

An individual who was not an athlete may be inducted in the following categories: Legacy of Excellence, Lifetime Commitment, Philadelphia Medal.

From 2004-2010 The Pride of Philadelphia Award was given to teams or individuals who "represented the Philadelphia area with dignity, determination, and class through athletic achievement." [3]

The hall of fame's website has a page that honors every Greater Philadelphia team—college and professional—that won the championship in its particular sport. [7]

Hall of Fame Charities

The Foundation formed Hall of Fame Charities in 2004. It supports or has formed partnerships with organizations in the Greater Philadelphia area that promote youth sports, especially at the pre-teen, grade-school level. These organizations include: Richie Ashburn Baseball Foundation, Police Athletic League (PAL) Junior Golf, Arthur Ashe Youth Tennis and Education, Bruce Simon Southampton Summer Basketball Camp, The First Tee of Philadelphia, and Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation. Hall of Fame Charities also has student [9] and community [10] programs.

The Curse of Billy Penn (1987–2008) was a sports-related curse, urban legend, and popular explanation for the failure of major Philadelphia professional sports teams to win championships following the March 1987 construction of the One Liberty Place skyscraper, which exceeded the height of William Penn's statue atop Philadelphia City Hall. For decades prior to the construction of One Liberty Place, there had been a gentlemen's agreement in place to ensure that no building in Philadelphia would be permitted to be higher than the William Penn statue atop Philadelphia City Hall.

Jerold Taylor "Jay" Wright Jr. is an American former college basketball coach. He served as the head coach of Villanova University from 2001 until 2022. Wright led the Villanova Wildcats to six Big East Conference championships and 16 NCAA tournament appearances in 21 seasons as head coach. Under Wright, Villanova reached four Final Fours and won two national championships in 2016 and 2018. Wright is widely regarded as one of the best coaches in NCAA history.

Edward Malcolm Snider was an American business executive. He was the chairman of Comcast Spectacor, a Philadelphia-based sports and entertainment company that owns the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League; the Wells Fargo Center; the regional sports network Comcast SportsNet; and Global Spectrum, an international facilities management company. The Temple Owls men's basketball team represents Temple University in the sport of basketball. The Owls compete in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I as a member of the American Athletic Conference. They play their home games in the Liacouras Center on the university's main campus in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and are currently led by head coach Adam Fisher. Temple is the sixth-most winningest NCAA Division I men's college basketball program of all time, with 1,978 wins at the end of the 2022–23 season. Although they have reached the NCAA Tournament over thirty times, they are one of nine programs with that many appearances to have not won the Tournament and one of four to have never reached the National Championship Game.

The Philadelphia Sports Writers Association (PSWA) was founded on May 12, 1904, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The first of what would become an annual Awards Dinner was held on February 15, 1905.

Collin Gillespie is an American professional basketball player for the Denver Nuggets of the National Basketball Association (NBA), on a two-way contract with the Grand Rapids Gold of the NBA G League. He played college basketball for the Villanova Wildcats. Gillespie was named Big East co-Player of the Year in 2021 and won it outright the following year.
