The West Party is an Australian political party based in the western suburbs of Melbourne founded by businessman Paul Hopper, who ran as an independent in the 2025 Werribee state by-election. The party aims to run candidates in all western suburbs for the 2026 Victorian state election. [1]
Hopper stated the new party would remain in the “sensible centre” of politics and that the party is focused on popular issues such as family, roads, public health and safety. [2] The party intends to run candidates in Footscray, Kororoit, Laverton, Niddrie, Point Cook, St Albans, Sunbury, Sydenham, Tarneit, Werribee & Williamstown. [3]
The party is primarily aimed at appealing to dissatisfied Labor voters. [4] Hopper has ruled out making preference deals with the Liberals, contributing to Labor narrowly defeating the Liberals in the 2025 Werribee state by-election. [2] He was a candidate in the by-election and came in third place. [5] [6] [7]
Paul Hopper is a member of the Hopper family, the namesake of western suburb Hoppers Crossing. [8] Other notable politicians that are members of the party include Wyndham City Council candidate Lisa Markovic, and chair of the Werribee Museum and Historical Society, Lisa Heinrichs.[ citation needed ]
Former Victorian Labor strategist and ABC analyst Kos Samaras suggests that in the upcoming state election, the new party could provide an option for voters traditionally loyal to Labor but seeking change, by concentrating on practical, community-focused policies without aligning strictly with traditional left or right ideologies.
