The Tyneside Passenger Transport Executive was the operations arm of the Tyneside Passenger Transport Authority, created by the Transport Act 1968. [1] and came into operation on 1 January 1970.

Area covered

The initial operating area of the PTE covered a number of local suthority areas in south east Nothumberland and north east Co Durham. [2]

On 1 March 1973, the PTE area expanded to include two new local authority areas. [3]

Operations

Tyneside PTE took over the municipal bus operations of Newcastle Corporation and South Shields Corporation from 1 January 1970 [4] and added those of Sunderland Corporation from 1 March 1973. It adopted a livery very similar to that used by Newcastle Transport.

In 1972, it took control of Market Place Ferry (now known as the Shields Ferry) crossing the River Tyne between North Shields and South Shields.

Replacement

The Local Government Act 1972 created the metropolitan county of Tyne and Wear on 1 April 1974. [5] As a result, the Tyneside Passenger Transport Authority was abolished, with the new Tyne and Wear County Council taking over responsibility for that role. [6] The PTE's operating area was altered to coincide with that of the new county, changing to become the Tyne and Wear PTE.

Shields Ferry ferry across the River Tyne in north east England

The Shields Ferry operates across the River Tyne, England, between North Shields and South Shields. The service is operated by Nexus, the Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Executive (PTE). It was known as the Market Place Ferry until takeover by the PTE in 1972.

The Blyth and Tyne Railway was a railway company in Northumberland, England. It was incorporated in 1853 to unify several private railways and waggonways that were concerned with bringing coal from the Northumberland coalfield to Blyth and to the River Tyne. Over the years it expanded its network to include Ashington, Morpeth and Tynemouth. As coal output increased the company became very prosperous in hauling the mineral to quays for export, and in addition a residential passenger service based on Newcastle built up.

North East Combined Authority local government body in north east England

The North East Combined Authority is a combined authority that covers part of the North East region of England. It was established by statutory instrument under the Local Democracy, Economic Development and Construction Act 2009 on 15 April 2014. It is a strategic authority with powers over transport, economic development and regeneration. At its first meeting on 15 April 2014, Simon Henig, Leader of Durham County Council, was elected as its chair. The functions, property, rights and liabilities of the former Tyne and Wear Integrated Transport Authority were inherited by the North East Combined Authority, forming an executive body within the new authority as the Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Executive.

1973 Tyne and Wear County Council election

The 1973 Tyne and Wear County Council election was held on 12 April 1973 as part of the first elections to the new local authorities established by the Local Government Act 1972 in England and Wales.104 councillors were elected from 95 electoral divisions across the region's five boroughs. Each division returned either one or two county councillors each by first-past-the-post voting for a four-year term of office. The election took place ahead of the elections to the area's metropolitan borough councils, which followed on 10 May 1973.

The North East Joint Transport Committee is a special joint committee of the North East Combined Authority and the North of Tyne Combined Authority. It is responsible for public transport policy in Tyne and Wear, County Durham and Northumberland. It is the governance of Nexus, the trading name of the Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Executive. The inaugural meeting was held on 20 November 2018.
