Ubungo District, officially the, Ubungo Municipal Council (Halimashauri ya Manispaa ya Ubungo, in Swahili) is one of five districts of the Dar es Salaam Region of Tanzania. The Kinondoni District and Kibaha of the Pwani Region border the district to the north; the Kisarawe District of Pwani Region borders it to the west; and the Ilala District borders the it to the south and east. The district covers an area of 269.4 km2 (104.0 sq mi). [2] The district is comparable in size to the land area of St. Kitts and Nevis. [3] The administrative seat is Kwembe. The district is home to the University of Dar es Salaam, The Magufuli Bus Terminal, the largest in the country, and Pande Game Reserve the largest protected land area in Dar es Salaam Region. In addition, the district is home to the largest natural gas powered power station, the Ubungo Thermal Power Station and the headquarters of the Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (TANESCO). The 2022 census states the population of the district as 1,086,912. [4]
The Zaramo, a Bantu-speaking tribe, have lived in the area that is now Ubungo for thousands of years. Similar to the Zaramo, the Kaguru from Morogoro Region, are a matrilineal community and cousins. The Kaguru word Lubungo, which refers to a strong, malleable form of wood and is frequently used to describe a tough, resilient woman—the ideal sort of woman, may be the source of the Ubungo's derivation. Most likely the district got its name from the Lubungo River, which a tributary of the Msimbazi River. [5]
The fourteen (14) wards that make up the Ubungo Municipal Council are further subdivided into sub-wards known as Mtaa (single) or Mitaa (plural). It takes 91 Mitaa. Additionally, the Municipality includes two electoral districts: Ubungo and Kibamba. The Full Council, which is the entity in charge of municipal affairs, is made up of 14 Councillors, two of whom are elected MPs from specific constituencies. [6] The wards are listed below:
A total of 386.3 km of roads in the Ubungo District Council are maintained by the council, with 23 km of asphalt, 245.25 km of gravel, 118.05 km of earth roads, and 78 bridges and box culverts. Ubungo Interchange was launched in February 2021, and was named to honor the late Chief Secretary, John Kijazi. [7] The bus terminal that was formerly called Ubungo Bus Terminal has been relocated to Magufuli Bus Terminal in Mbezi. [8] The old Ubungo Bus Terminal has been converted to a new UDART bus service station as of November 2021.
Residents of Ubungo get their water primarily from the Lower and Upper Ruvu, which are run by the Dar es Salaam Water and Sewerage Authority (DAWASA). 68% of the water used each day comes from DAWASA systems, with the remaining portion coming from shallow and deep wells that are both privately and communally held. Only 68% of the estimated 1,031349 residents in Kinondoni Municipality have direct access to clean and safe water, and the remaining 32% do not have easy access. [9]
Ubungo is thought to have a population of 1,031,349 in 2016, of whom 701,317 are of working age. The remaining population is made up of elderly people and children, who total 20,626 and 309,404, respectively. where 61% of the workforce works in the private sector, 35% is self-employed, and 4% is working in government. Private businesses, institutions, businesses, petty traders, fishing, livestock rearing, and agricultural pursuits are among the activities involved. [10]
Small-scale industry is primarily centered in residential areas and is concentrated in home production sectors dispersed throughout the Municipal. Tanzanians working individually or in groups produce a wide variety of commodities in this industry. The authorized industrial regions of Ubungo, Mabibo, and Makuburi are home to large-scale businesses. Ubungo hosts the country's second-largest indoor shopping mall, the Mlimani City Shopping Mall. [11]
The National Bank of Commerce (NBC), National Micro Finance Bank (NMB), Tanzania Postal Bank, Akiba Commercial Bank, Access Bank, Azania Bank, and Efatha Bank Ltd. are the main financial institutions with services in the Municipality. Some loan facilities established by the Kinondoni Municipal Council are geared toward women and young people. These include the Kinondoni Youth Employment Network for Urban Renewal (K-YEN-UR), the Women Development Funds (WDF), and the Village Community Bank (VICOBA) through the Kinondoni Women and Youth Development Funds (KWYDF). The Zaramo and Ndengereko minorities were the district's original residents, but subsequent urbanization has made Ubungo one of Tanzania's most ethnically diverse districts, some wards have ethnic majorities for example Kimara ward is home to one of the largest Chagga communities outside Kilimanjaro Region. [13]
The municipality had a population of 1,086,912 in 2022, with 519,925 males and 566,987 females. According to the census, there are 317,087 households in the city, with an average of 3.4 people per home. [4]
There are 113 pre-primary schools in the Ubungo Municipal Council, of which 60 are owned by the government and 53 by the private sector. Additionally, the District Council has 118 primary schools, of which 64 are owned by the government and 54 by the private sector. 76,346 students in STD I through STD VII are enrolled in all 64 primary schools, together with 2,434 teachers. For higher learning institutions, Ubungu is home to The University of Dar es Salaam, [16] and St.Joseph University in Kwembe. [17]
In cooperation with service providers from the commercial sector, the Ubungo District Council is in charge of delivering health services to its residents. The council currently has 68 health facilities in total, 17 of which are held by the government and the remaining 51 by private organizations. The sole government-owned hospital in the Municipality that offers medical services is Sinza Hospital. This hospital, which provides services for 1,000 to 1,500 in-and-out patients daily, is known as a district hospital. [18]
The municipality already has certain sports organizations, such as the Ubungo Football Association (UFA), but Ubungo Municipal is also working to start organizations for boxing, handball, volleyball, table tennis, and netball. The primary sports venues are Makurumla Sports Field, owned by CCM, Baraza Sports Field in Mburahati, Manzese Roman Catholic Church, where netball courts are located, Sahala Sports Ground in Mburahati, Kiluvya, Kwembe, Kibamba, Ubungo Nation Housing, and Kines Football Group. Municipality facilities also include play areas for educational and public institutions, including the University of Dar es Salaam. [19]
Musical legends like Wazee wa Ngwasuma (i.FM Academy), Acudo Impact, Diamond Music Entertainment, Twanga Pepeta Entertainment, Bwagamoyo Sound, Mapacha Watatu, Utalii Band, Vijana Bendi, and Malaika Band are all based in Ubungo. [20]
Dar es Salaam Region is one of Tanzania's 31 administrative regions and is located in the east coast of the country. The region covers an area of 1,393 km2 (538 sq mi). The region is comparable in size to the combined land and water areas of the nation state of Mauritius. Dar es Salaam Region is bordered to the east by Indian Ocean and it is entirely surrounded by Pwani Region. The Pwani districts that border Dar es Salaam region are Bagamoyo District to the north, Kibaha Urban District to the west, Kisarawe District to the south west and Mkuranga District to the south of the region. The region's seat (capital) is located inside the ward of Ilala. The region is named after the city of Dar es Salaam itself. The region is home to Tanzania's major finance, administration and industries, thus the making it the country's richest region. The region also has the second highest Human Development Index in the country after Mjini Magharibi. According to the 2022 census, the region has a total population of 5,383,728. The region has the highest population in Tanzania followed by Mwanza Region.
Kinondoni District, officially the Kinondoni Municipal Council is one of five districts of the Dar es Salaam Region of Tanzania. The district is bordered to the north by Bagamoyo District and Kibaha of Pwani Region, to the east by the Indian Ocean, the west by Ubungo District, and to the south by the Ilala District. The district covers an area of 269.5 km2 (104.1 sq mi). The district is comparable in size to the land area of Malta. The administrative seat is Ndugumbi. The district is home to one of the best preserved Medieval Swahili settlements, Kunduchi Ruins, headquarters for the National Muslim Council of Tanzania (BAKWATA) and Makumbusho Village Museum. Considered the cultural center of Dar es Salaam, Kinondoni District is also regarded the birthplace of the musical genre of Singeli. In addition the district is one of two districts in Dar es Salaam that has a National Historic Site, namely the Kunduchi Ruins. The 2012 National Tanzania Census states the population for Kinondoni as 1,775,049.
Goba is an administrative ward in Ubungo District of the Dar es Salaam Region in Tanzania. The Wazo, Mbezi Juu, and Makongo wards of Kinondoni MC border the ward on the north and the east, respectively. The ward is bordered by Saranga to the south and Mbezi to the west. According to the 2012 census, the ward has a total population of 42,669.
Kigogo is an administrative ward in Kinondoni District of the Dar es Salaam Region in Tanzania. Mburahati and Mabibo of Ubungo MC border the ward on the north and west, respectively. The ward is bordered to the east by the Mzimuni and Mchikichini of Ilala MC. The ward is bordered to the south by the wards of Ilala, Buguruni, and Tabata of Ilala MC. According to the 2012 census, the ward has a population of 57,613.
Mabibo chuo(Kata ya Kimara, in Swahili) is an administrative ward in Ubungo District of the Dar es Salaam Region in Tanzania. The ward borders Kinondoni's Makongo to the north. Ubungo and Makuburi border the ward to the east. Kimanga and Kinyerezi of Ilala are to the south. Saranga ward is to the west. According to the 2012 census, the ward has a total population of 76,577.
Kinondoni is an administrative ward in the Kinondoni District of the Dar es Salaam Region in Tanzania. The ward is bordered to the east by Mikocheni and Mwananyamala wards, to the west by Hananasif ward, and to the north by Msasani ward. The ward is home to the headquarters for the National Muslim Council of Tanzania (BAKWATA) with its grand Mosque. Mabibo is an administrative ward in Ubungo District of the Dar es Salaam Region in Tanzania. Manzese and Ubungo border the ward to the north. Makurumla and Mburahati border the ward to the east. Kigogo and Tabata, the latter of which is in Ilala and former of Kinondoni, are to the south. The Makuburi ward is to the west. According to the 2012 census, the ward has a total population of 85,735.
Makurumla is an administrative ward in Ubungo District of the Dar es Salaam Region in Tanzania. The Kinondoni Municipal District's Ndugumbi ward borders the ward on the north. Mzimuni Ward to the east, Mburahati and Mabibo to the south were its neighbors. Lastly, via Manzese ward towards the west. In 2016 the Tanzania National Bureau of Statistics report there were 79,331 people in the ward, from 63,352 in 2012.
Manzese is an administrative ward in Ubungo District of the Dar es Salaam Region in Tanzania. Sinza and Kijitonyama, the latter belonging to Kinondoni MC, border the ward on the north. The ward is bordered to the east by the wards of Tandale, Ndugumbi, and Makurumla. Mabibo is in the south. Ubungo ward is to the west. Manzese was founded as a squatted informal settlement and had a population of 90,000 in 1975. A third of its adults were working full-time. By 1980, it had basic infrastructure such as roads and sanitation facilities. According to the 2012 census, the ward has a total population of 70,507.
Mburahati is an administrative ward in Ubungo District of the Dar es Salaam Region in Tanzania. Makurumla borders the ward to the north. The ward is bordered by Mzimuni of Kinondoni MC to the east. The Kinondoni ward of Kigogo is to the south. Mabibo is to the west. According to the 2012 census, the ward has a total population of 34,123.
Mzimuni is an administrative ward in Kinondoni District of the Dar es Salaam Region in Tanzania. The ward's northern boundaries are formed by the wards of Ndugumbi and Magomeni. Upanga West and Jangwani wards of Ilala MC surround the ward on the east, and Kigogo ward borders it on the south. The Makurumla and Mburahati wards of Ubungo MC are to the west. The ward is home to the Mwalimu Nyerere Memorial House. In 2016 the Tanzania National Bureau of Statistics report there were 26,905 people in the ward, from 21,486 in 2012.
Ndugumbi is an administrative ward and district capital of the Kinondoni District of the Dar es Salaam Region in Tanzania. Tandale and Makumbusho ward border the ward to the north, Mzimuni to the east, Makurumla to the south and Manzese on the west. The last two being located in Ubungo District. In 2016 the Tanzania National Bureau of Statistics report there were 46,134 people in the ward, from 36,841 in 2012.
Sinza is an administrative ward in Ubungo District of the Dar es Salaam Region in Tanzania. The Kinondoni MC communities of Makongo and Kijitonyama, which border the ward to the north and east, respectively. Manzese and Ubungo wards are to the south and west of here. According to the 2012 census, the ward has a total population of 40,546.
Tandale is an administrative ward in Kinondoni District of the Dar es Salaam Region in Tanzania. The ward is bordered by the wards of Makumbusho to the east, Ndugumbi to the south, Kijitonyama to the north, and Manzese to the west in the Ubungo MC. Tandale is considered the birthplace of Singeli music, specifically by the Zaramo community in the Mtogole neighborhood of the ward. The ward is also where musical artist Diamond Platnumz grew up. According to the 2012 census, the ward has a population of 54,781.
Kinyerezi is an administrative ward of the Ilala Municipal Council of the Dar es Salaam Region in Tanzania. The wards of Kinondoni MC are bordered to the north by Msigani, Saranga, and Kimara wards of Ubungo MC. The ward is bordered to the east by the wards of Segerea and Kimanga. Kipawa, Ukonga, Gongolamboto, and Pugu are to the south. The ward is bordered by Kwembe to the west. According to the 2022 census, the ward has a total population of 62,480.
Msigani is an administrative ward in Ubungo District of the Dar es Salaam Region in Tanzania. Mbezi forms the northern boundary of the ward. The ward is bordered with Saranga to the east. The Kinyerezi ward of Ilala MC is to the south. Kwembe is to the west. According to the 2012 census, the ward has a total population of 34,123.

Mbezi Juu is an administrative ward in Kinondoni District of the Dar es Salaam Region in Tanzania. The ward is surrounded by the wards of Goba of Ubungo District to the west, Makongo to the south, and Kawe to the east. Last but not least, the ward is bordered to the north by Wazo and Kunduchi wards. The ward is named after the Mbezi River, which runs through it towards Kawe. In 2012, the ward had a population of 41,340.
Wazo is an administrative ward in Kinondoni District of the Dar es Salaam Region in Tanzania. The ward is surrounded to the east by the wards of Kunduchi and Kawe. The Goba and Mbezi wards of the Ubungo District, as well as Mbezi Juu, about it to the south. Mabwepande and Bunju wards form the ward's western and northern boundaries. According to the 2012 census, the ward has a population of 90,825.
