The Provincetown Historic District encompasses most of the dense urban center of Provincetown, Massachusetts. The district is roughly bounded to the north by U.S. Route 6; to the west by the west end of Commercial St.; to the south by Provincetown Harbor; and to the east by the southeast end of Commercial St. It covers about 300 acres (120 ha), and includes more than 1,000 buildings. Its historic character spans more than 200 years of settlement, from the city's early years as a fishing community, to its development as a summer resort area and artists' colony beginning in the late 19th century. The district was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. Four properties in the district are also individually listed.
The Old Provincetown Public Library building is a historic building at 330 Commercial Street in downtown Provincetown, Massachusetts. Built in 1874, it served as the town's public library from then until 2002, when the library was moved to the former Center Methodist Church. The building, a fine local example of Second Empire architecture, now houses the local tourist board. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.
The Unitarian Universalist Meeting House of Provincetown is an historic church at 236 Commercial Street in Provincetown, Massachusetts. The Greek Revival building was built in 1847 based on a design by Benjamin Hallett, for a congregation that had been established in 1829. It is a massive post and beam timber-frame construction, and was originally built without the tower. The tower, which is telescopic in form, with Greek ornamentation, is the only surviving steeple in Provincetown, and is a landmark for seafarers.
The US Post Office-Millbury Main is an historic building on 119 Elm Street in Millbury, Massachusetts. The single-story brick building was built in 1941, and has styling with Art Deco features. It has a cupola with diamond-glass windows and a copper roof; the diamond window pattern also appears in the windows that flank and top the building's entrance. The interior retains much of its original woodwork and styling, and includes a mural painted by Joe Lasker depicting a battle between Native Americans and English colonists.
The Middleborough Main Post Office is a historic post office building in Middleborough, Massachusetts. The single-story brick and stone building was erected in 1933 as part of a Works Progress Administration jobs program. The building has neo-Classical style, with a projecting entry pavilion, and windows slightly recessed in round arch openings.
Wood End Light Lookout Station is a historic lighthouse, located at the southwest end of Long Point in Provincetown, Massachusetts. It is located at Wood End, near the southernmost extent of the Provincetown Spit, and acts as a navigational aid to vessels on their approach to Provincetown Harbor. The Long Point Light Station, further down the peninsula at the tip of Long Point is an identical design and completed in 1875, three years after Wood End Light.
The Hawthorne Class Studio is a historic studio building off Miller Hill Road in Provincetown, Massachusetts. The 1+1⁄2-story studio building is a large gambrel-roofed barn-like building, measuring about 50 by 80 feet, set on concrete pillars and clad in wooden shingles. Its symmetrically arranged front has a center entry with narrow flanking windows, paired windows in bays on either side of the entrance, and single windows at the second level under the gable. The studio was constructed c. 1907 to house the teaching studio of artist Charles Hawthorne. Hawthorne began giving art classes in Provincetown in 1899, and was an acknowledged leader of the artistic community there at the time of his death in 1930.
The US Post Office—Easthampton Main is a historic post office building at 19 Union Street in Easthampton, Massachusetts. Built in 1933, this Classical Revival building is one of the town center's most architecturally sophisticated buildings. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. It is currently being used as a senior center.
The Kemp Place and Barn form a historic farmstead in Reading, Massachusetts. The main house is a 2+1⁄2-story Italianate wood-frame structure, with an L-shaped cross-gable footprint and clapboard siding. Its roofline is studded with paired brackets, its windows have "eared" or shouldered hoods, and there is a round-arch window in the front gable end. The porch wraps around the front to the side, supported by Gothic style pierced-panel posts. The square cupola has banks of three round-arch windows on each side. It is one of Reading's more elaborate Italianate houses, and is one of the few of the period whose cupola has survived.
The US Post Office–Medford Main is a historic post office at 20 Forest Street in Medford, Massachusetts. Built in 1937, it is a fine example of construction work funded by the Public Works Administration, a jobs program of the 1930s. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.
The Dow Block is a historic commercial building on Central Square in Stoneham, Massachusetts. Built in 1864, it is the first of three mid-19th century buildings that define Central Square, and is a fine example of Second Empire architecture. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, and was included in the Central Square Historic District in 1990.
Flanley's Block is a historic commercial building at 349–353 Main Street in Wakefield, Massachusetts, US. Built about 1895, it is a well-preserved local example of late 19th-century Italianate commercial architecture. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.
The Item Building is a historic commercial building at 26 Albion Street in Wakefield, Massachusetts. Built in 1912, the single-story brick building serves as the headquarters of The Wakefield Daily Item, Wakefield's main community newspaper, and is a well-kept example of early 20th century commercial architecture.
The United States Post Office–Wakefield Main is a historic post office building at 321 Main Street in Wakefield, Massachusetts. Built in 1936 as part of a Depression-era works project, it is a Classical Revival structure that harmonizes with its neighbors. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987, and included in the Common District in 1990.
The Wakefield Trust Company is a historic commercial building at 371 Main Street in Wakefield, Massachusetts. Built in 1924, it is one of three buildings on the west side of Main Street that give the town center a strong Classical Revival flavor. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.
