University Mall is a shopping mall in Carbondale, Illinois, United States. Opened in 1974, it originally featured JCPenney and Sears as its major anchor stores, the latter taking the place of a Britt's discount store which never opened for business. The mall received multiple expansions in the 1980s and 1990s, adding Meis (sold to Elder-Beerman in 1989), Venture Stores, and Famous-Barr. Sears moved to the then Illinois Centre Mall and was replaced by Montgomery Ward. Venture, Elder-Beerman, and Montgomery Ward all closed throughout the 1990s, with the former becoming K's Merchandise Mart until 2007, while Famous-Barr became Macy's in 2006. The mall has seen several closures in stores throughout the 21st century, including both Macy's and JCPenney. The remaining mall tenants include Ross Dress for Less, Ulta Beauty, Old Navy, Bed Bath & Beyond (closing), Illinicare Health, and SIH Medical Group. University Mall is managed by Namdar Realty Group.
The first store to open at University Mall was a JCPenney department store, which opened in 1971. The same year, real estate developers David E. Hocker and Alan Squitieri, both of Owensboro, Kentucky, announced plans to build a mall extending easterly from the JCPenney store. Under their plans, the other original anchor stores would be Britt's (a discount department store owned by J. J. Newberry) and a Walgreens pharmacy. [1] After construction of the Britt's store was completed, the company defaulted on its lease, and the store was never completed. As a result, the space was instead converted to Sears. [2] The mall was slated to open in October 1974. In addition to JCPenney, Sears, and Walgreens, it also featured 20 other stores including Kirlin's Hallmark, Zales Jewelers, Baskin-Robbins, Waldenbooks, Regis Hairstylists, Karmelkorn, and General Nutrition Center, with a four-screen American Multi-Cinema theater planned for opening by December. [3] Opening ceremonies occurred on October 30, 1974, accompanied by the Carbondale Community High School band and then-Miss Illinois Jean Ahern, along with performers dressed as Winnie the Pooh and Big Bird. The first expansion to the mall occurred in 1980, when a new wing was added consisting of more than ten new storefronts and another anchor store: Terre Haute, Indiana-based Meis. Among the stores present in the new wing were Lerner New York, Spencer Gifts, Pearle Vision, Pier 1 Imports, Kinney Shoes, and Claire's. [5] In August 1989, Elder-Beerman completed acquisition and renaming of all stores in the Meis chain, including the location at University Mall. [6] A year later, Sears relocated to the Illinois Centre Mall in nearby Marion, and their location at University Mall was sold to Montgomery Ward. [7]
A second expansion in 1991 added a new wing and two more anchor stores both owned by The May Department Stores Company: Famous-Barr and Venture Stores. [8] Venture opened for business in March 1991, with many stores in their wing, including Victoria's Secret, Limited Express, and a relocation of Lerner New York, following in May. This new expansion cost over $43 million, and consisted of over 290,000 square feet (27,000 m2) of retail space. [9] Both Montgomery Ward and Famous-Barr opened for business on November 1, 1991. Other stores joining the mall at this point included Hibbett Sports, Maurices, and Belden Jewelers. In addition, a food court opened near JCPenney. [7]
Venture closed its store at University Mall in 1993, [10] and later became K's Merchandise Mart. Elder-Beerman closed in 1997 and became health offices. An Old Navy was added in May 2002, [11] and later that year, the Montgomery Ward space was demolished for a movie theater owned by Kerasotes [12] (later AMC Theatres) and other small stores, including Bed Bath & Beyond, Goody's Family Clothing, Steve & Barry's, and Michaels. The food court was relocated in 2004 to the former Elder-Beerman wing. [13] A Panera Bread opened in the surrounding area on May 17 of the same year. [14] In 2005, Stoltz Management acquired the mall, and one year later, Famous-Barr was one of several nameplates to be converted to Macy's.
K's Merchandise closed in early 2007, [15] as did Michaels. [16] These closures were followed in 2008 by Goody's and Steve & Barry's. In October 2012, Ross Dress for Less opened in the space vacated by Michaels, [17] and the former Steve & Barry's became Shoe Dept. Encore. On April 27, 2018, it was announced that AMC Theatres will be closing on May 10, 2018.
On January 6, 2020, it was announced that Macy's would close in March 2020 as part of a plan to close 125 stores nationwide. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the store closed abruptly on March 17, 2020 along with all Macy's locations nationwide. The store never reopened to the public. [18]
On June 4, 2020, JCPenney announced that it would close by around October 2020 as part of a plan to close 154 stores nationwide. [19] This will leave the mall with no traditional anchor stores.
On September 15, 2022, it was announced that Bed Bath & Beyond would be closing as part of a plan to close 150 stores nationwide. [20]
Dayton Mall is a shopping mall in Miami Township, Montgomery County, Ohio, United States, a suburb of Dayton. The mall's anchor stores are Dick's Sporting Goods, DSW, Guitar Center, H&M, JCPenney, Kirkland's, LensCrafters, Macy's, Morris Home Furniture, Ross Dress for Less, and Ulta Beauty. Located ten miles (16 km) south of downtown Dayton, just north of the junction of Interstate 75 and Interstate 675 between the suburbs of Centerville and Miamisburg, the mall has attracted millions of visitors since its grand opening in 1970. The mall is owned by Washington Prime Group, a Columbus-based firm, which acquired the complex in 1997; the company also owns The Mall at Fairfield Commons nearby; it is managed and leased by Spinoso Real Estate Group.
Battlefield Mall is an enclosed shopping mall in Springfield, Missouri. Opened in 1970, the mall features 153 stores in 1,202,116 square feet (111,680.2 m2) of mall shop space. The anchor stores are JCPenney, 2 Dillard's stores, and Macy's. There is 1 vacant anchor store that was once Sears. It is managed and owned by Simon Property Group, the successor of the same company that built it.
Haute City Center, formerly Honey Creek Mall, is a shopping center in Terre Haute, Indiana, with 680,890 sq ft (63,257 m2) of gross leasing area. The mall has been owned by Out of the Box Ventures, a subsidiary of Lionheart Capital since 2019. The mall opened in 1968 as Honey Creek Square. The complex was expanded in 1973 and 1981, and was renovated in 1992 and 2007. The center was renamed to Honey Creek Mall at the time of the 1992 renovation. In 1999, a management contract for the mall was awarded to Trammell Crow Faison Regional Mall Services, a unit of Trammell Crow Co. of Dallas. The mall was then purchased by CBL & Associates Properties in 2004.
Northpark Mall is a super regional mall located in Joplin, Missouri. The mall opened in 1972 with 600,000 square feet, and featured 60 stores, restaurants, and other services. Today, the Northpark mall is 1,080,000 square feet, and features more than 100 inline tenants including a food court. Northpark Mall is the largest mall in the Joplin region and serves a trade area of nearly 500,000 people. Freeman hospital added a soft play area in the Macy's women's court in the summer of 2014. The mall was also the temporary home of the 11th and 12th grades of Joplin High School until August 2014, when the new high school was completed. Northpark Mall is managed by CBL & Associates Properties. The anchor stores are Vintage Stock, TJ Maxx, H&M, JCPenney, and Dunham's Sports. There are three vacant anchor stores that were once two Macy's stores and Sears.
South County Center is a shopping mall located in Mehlville, Missouri, at the intersection between Interstate 55, Interstate 255, and U.S. Route 50. It opened on October 17, 1963 and was designed by Victor Gruen. it included a dome-roofed Famous-Barr, which became Macy's in 2006, a National Supermarket occupying the basement floor, which closed in 1973, and later JCPenney as anchors. Stix, Baer & Fuller,, was added in 1973 along with a new wing of stores. A Sears, a food court, and additional mall stores were added in 2001. In 2004, Several stores and restaurants were added that could be accessed from outside the mall including Qdoba, Applebee's, Noodle's and Company, and Border's. The anchor stores are Macy's, Round 1 Entertainment, Dillard's, JCPenney, DXL Men's Apparel, and Vintage Stock. History In 1990, the mall was purchased by The Westfield Group, which retained ownership until 2007. CBL & Associates Properties, Inc. bought South County Center and three other Westfield malls as part of their expansion into the St. Louis area.

Kentucky Oaks Mall is an enclosed super-regional shopping mall in Paducah, Kentucky, United States. The mall was developed by the Cafaro Company, which owns and manages it. Sandusky Mall is an indoor shopping center located in Perkins Township, south of Sandusky, Ohio. It is located on the east side of US 250, north of I-80/I-90 and SR 2. It is the only major shopping center within 45 miles (72 km). The mall comprises more than 70 stores. The anchor stores are TJ Maxx, JCPenney, Books-A-Million, Dewey Furniture, Five Below, and Ross. There is currently a partially vacant anchor remaining: Elder Beerman, which was partially filled by Shoe Dept. Encore when they relocated from their former spot by American Eagle Outfitters. JCPenney had previously operated a store in downtown Sandusky. It is managed by Cafaro Company of Niles, Ohio.
Woodville Mall was an enclosed shopping mall off of Woodville Road in Northwood, Ohio, outside the city of Toledo, Ohio. The mall opened in 1969 and, after losing most of its stores in the 2000s, became a dead mall. The mall's interior was closed in December 2011 and demolished in March 2014.

Kokomo Town Center, formerly Kokomo Mall, is an outdoor shopping mall in Kokomo, Indiana. Opened in 1963, the property was converted from an enclosed mall to an outdoor plaza in 2014. The plaza’s stores are Gabe's, AMC Theatres, Robert Miller & Son Furniture, Momentum Clothing & Accessories, Classy Nails, CosmoProf, and T-Mobile.
Cross County Mall is a shopping mall in Mattoon, Illinois, U.S. It was opened in 1971 with JCPenney, G. C. Murphy, IGA, Arlan's, and Myers Brothers, with Sears joining in 1972. Following the closure of Arlan's in 1973, the space became Kmart one year later. G. C. Murphy became Meis, Elder-Beerman, and then Carson's, while Kmart moved out of the mall in 1993 and became a larger Sears store. The Sears closed in 2014 and became a Rural King in 2019. After the closures of Carson's and JCPenney in 2018 and 2020 respectively, the mall's remaining anchors are Rural King, Marshalls, and Jo-Ann Fabrics. Rural King also owns the mall.
