Valve Bone Woe is the second solo studio album by American singer-songwriter Chrissie Hynde. The album consists entirely of cover versions, and was released on September 6, 2019, by BMG Rights Management. [1] [2] The jazz-influenced album features 14 renditions from a wide variety of artists, including Frank Sinatra, the Beach Boys, Nick Drake, John Coltrane and more. [3] The album was generally received well by critics.
The genesis of the album began in 1999 when Chrissie Hynde teamed up with composer and producer Marius de Vries to work on music for the film Eye of the Beholder . [4] Hynde writes in the album's liner notes: "After we'd recorded "I Wish You Love" for the Eye of the Beholder soundtrack I'd often expressed a desire to do more along those lines. What eventually emerged was the idea to do what we refer to as our jazz/dub album." [5] [6]
The majority of the album was recorded at London's Air Studios with additional vocals recorded at Sarm Studios in London. [5] Although the album includes two instrumentals: Charles Mingus' "Meditation on a Pair of Wire Cutters" and John Coltrane's "Naima", Hynde features on wordless background vocals on both tracks. [7]
In the album's liner notes, Hynde writes about the album title: "A few years back when I saw an obit in the paper for the valve trombonist, Bob Brookmeyer, I mailed my jazz sax-playing brother, saying "R. I. P. Bob Brookmeyer." Terry, a man of few words, responded with "Valve Bone Woe," a kind of Haiku beatnik prose. I thought that was a perfect title for the album." [5]

Valve Bone Woe received generally positive reviews from critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from critics, the album received an average score of 77, which indicates "generally favorable reviews", based on 11 reviews. [8]
Stephen Thomas Erlewine, writing for AllMusic, wrote, "Most of Valve Bone Woe sways to a soft, gentle beat and is dressed in elegant strings, keyboards, and other jazzy accouterments, but beneath this lush exterior lies some modern flair. Hints of studio trickery are peppered throughout the record, most evident in elongated electronic echoes, and far from seeming out of place, they lend the album a certain sense of hipness." [9] Rich Wilhelm of PopMatters said, "It could be a jazz album, or a mood music album, or a covers album, or a wee-small-hours-of-the-morning album ... These descriptions all work, and yet Valve Bone Woe doesn't fit comfortably into any of those categories ... But with its orchestral ambitions, imaginative song selection, and sometimes unexpected sonic architecture, Valve Bone Woe is a supremely odd journey as well." [14]
The Guardian's Rachel Aroesti wrote that Valve Bone Woe "sees Hynde drown out cliche (and, occasionally, any recognisable tune) with her inbuilt insouciant cool and disregard for anything approaching stuffy tradition. Alongside jazz, she calls on dub, psychedelia and faintly disorientating interludes of electronica to enhance the otherworldliness of her alternative American songbook." [10]
Matt Silver, writing for WRTI, wrote that the tracks not originally composed as jazz tunes are given "something close enough to qualify as jazz treatment, but, as a whole, this is as genre-fluid and idiosyncratic a collection of jazz and pop covers as any in recent memory." Silver felt that Hynde "deserves recognition for an audacious approach to her first jazz album. She takes some bold chances; some land, others don't, and still others may prove to be tastes acquired over time." [15]

Pretenders is the debut studio album by British-American band The Pretenders, released in January 1980. A combination of rock and roll, punk and new wave music, this album made the band famous. The album features the singles "Stop Your Sobbing", "Kid" and "Brass in Pocket".
Christine Ellen Hynde is an American-British musician. She is a founding member and the lead vocalist, guitarist, and primary songwriter of the rock band The Pretenders, and one of the band's two remaining original members alongside drummer Martin Chambers. She is the only continuous member of the band, appearing on every studio album.
¡Viva El Amor! is the seventh studio album by the rock band the Pretenders, released in 1999. The band's lineup for the album is the same as that credited on 1994's Last of the Independents: Chrissie Hynde, Martin Chambers (drums), Andy Hobson (bass) and Adam Seymour (guitar). Last of the Independents is the sixth studio album by English American rock group the Pretenders, released in 1994. For this album, the band is officially credited as being Chrissie Hynde, Adam Seymour (guitar), Andy Hobson (bass) and Martin Chambers (drums). However, this line-up only plays together on one track ; the rest of the album is performed by Hynde and Seymour in conjunction with a rotating series of musicians on bass and drums. These musicians include Hobson and Chambers, as well as bassists Andy Rourke, Tom Kelly and David Paton, and drummers Jimmy Copley and J.F.T. Hood. A few other session musicians also appear, including Ian Stanley, and one-time Pretenders guitarist Robbie McIntosh, who plays alongside Hynde and Seymour on "I'm a mother". The album marked the official return of Chambers, who had been fired by Hynde eight years prior.
Loose Screw is the eighth studio album by rock group the Pretenders, and was released in 2002. It was the first time that the Pretenders had the same credited band line-up on three consecutive studio albums.
"Que reste-t-il de nos amours ?" is a French popular song, with music by Léo Chauliac and Charles Trenet and lyrics by Charles Trenet. A version of the song with English lyrics entitled "I Wish You Love" is recognizable by the opening line "I wish you bluebirds, in the spring".
Break Up the Concrete is the ninth studio album by rock group the Pretenders. It is their first studio album since Loose Screw in 2002. Several "exclusive" editions of the disc exist ; each appends a new countrified version of a vintage Pretenders song, in keeping with the general sound of the album. The title song "Break Up the Concrete" was used in the opening scene of an episode of House M.D..

Mother is a collaborative studio album of jazz pianist Jacky Terrasson and jazz trumpeter Stéphane Belmondo. The album was recorded in Pompignan, France and released on September 2, 2016, by Impulse! Records. This is Terrasson's second release for Impulse! The album contains 14 tracks, a mix of jazz standards and the originals written by bandmembers. The title track of the album, the melancholic ballad "Mother", has already appeared on Terrasson's album Gouache released in 2012. Originally, the album was supposed to be called Twin Spirit, but the duo chose to name it Mother due to the memory of Terrasson's suddenly deceased mother.
Relentless is the twelfth studio album by the English-American rock band the Pretenders, released on 15 September 2023 through Parlophone. It is the first Pretenders album released through Parlophone and was preceded by the lead single "Let the Sun Come In". The band began their Relentless Tour on 12 May, which includes the UK and Ireland as well as various European, US and Canada dates up to October 2023.
