Venissa Anne Head (born 1 September 1956 in Merthyr Tydfil) is a former international track and field athlete from Wales.

Biography

She went to secondary school at Cyfarthfa Castle Grammar School in Wales, and it was whilst there that she won her first of 15 Welsh shot put titles, at the age of 17. [1] She won 25 Welsh titles in total, with her 10 successive discus titles coming between 1979 and 1988. [1]

She was a member of the Cardiff Athletic Club, where she still holds the club discus record, as well as both the indoor and outdoor shot put records. [2] She was also a member of Bristol and West Athletic Club, and still holds the club discus and shot put records.

She took part in the inaugural IAAF World Championships in 1983, competing in both the shot put and the discus throw. [3] In the shot put, she finished 5th in Group A in qualifying with a put of 18.41 metres. [4] She putted a shorter 18.05 in the final to finish 10th overall. [5] This result is the best ever by a British athlete. [6] No British athletes have ever made the final since. [7] In the discus she finished 8th in Qualifying Group B with a throw of 53.78, and so did not progress to the final. [8]

She was part of the British Olympic team for the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, where she again competed in the discus throw and shot put. In the discus, she threw 55.24 metres in qualifying, which was 24 cm further than the mark needed to qualify for the final, and was the shortest mark to automatically qualify. [9] She finished sixth in Group A and eighth overall in qualifying. In the final, she finished seventh, with a best throw of 58.18 metres, achieved in the third round. [10] In the shot put, she finished sixth with a throw of 17.90 metres, in a competition that went straight to a final as there were only thirteen entrants, caused by the 1984 Summer Olympics boycott. [11]

Head also represented Wales at the Commonwealth Games, winning the silver medal in the discus throw at the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

She is also a musician in Pontypool Brass Band, playing the tuba. [12]

She was inducted into the Welsh Athletics Hall of Fame in 2010. [13] [14]

She is the British indoor shot put record holder, with her personal best of 19.06 metres set on 7 April 1984. [15] This put also places her second on the overall all-time list. [16] She was second on the British all-time list for discus until 27 February 2016, when a throw by Jade Lally relegated her to third. [17]

Jacqueline ("Jackie") McKernan is a retired Northern Irish discus thrower. She represented Great Britain and Northern Ireland at three Olympic Games and won silver medals at the Commonwealth Games in 1990 and the Universiade in 1993.

Dani Stevens is a retired Australian discus thrower who in 2009 became the youngest ever female world champion in the event. She is the current national and Oceanian record holder. Stevens qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and threw 58.77m in the Women's dicus throw. This was not a sufficient distance to qualify her for the final.

Sultana Frizell is a Canadian track and field athlete competing in the hammer throw. Frizell currently trains under the guidance of Derek Evely in Kamloops, British Columbia. She competed at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Frizell is the former Commonwealth Games champion in the hammer throw and Commonwealth Games record holder for the event as well.

Cardiff Amateur Athletic Club, formed in 1882 as Roath (Cardiff) Harriers, is an athletics club based at the Cardiff International Sports Stadium, Cardiff. The club began as a cross country club, the first athletics only club in Wales. Roath Harriers runners became individual and team champions of the first Welsh Cross Country Championships, held on 7 March 1894. Roath Harriers shared Maindy Stadium with Birchgrove Harriers from its opening in 1951 and the two clubs amalgamated to form Cardiff Amateur Athletic Club in 1968. Cardiff were British Athletics League champions in 1973, 1974, and 1975 and remain one of the top twelve clubs in Britain.

Beverley Jones is a Paralympian from Wales competing in category F37 throwing events. Jones won a bronze medal at the 2006 Commonwealth Games as an EAD in the 100m sprint. Jones has qualified for four Summer Paralympics from 2000 to 2012 finishing fourth twice, in the sprint in 2000 at Sydney and in the shot put at Athens in 2004.

In 2021, at the U.S. Olympic Trials he threw 23.37 m to break Randy Barnes's 31-year-old record of 23.12 m by almost 10 inches (25 cm). Crouser is also a two-time World Champion and the World Championship Record holder in the shot put 23.51m, just 2+1⁄2 in off his world record.

Bevis Shergold was a British track and field athlete who competed in the 1938 European Athletics Championships and the 1948 Summer Olympics.

Jessica Ramsey is an American shot putter. She won the bronze medal in the women's shot put event at the 2019 Pan American Games held in Lima, Peru.
