Vibhor Sogani (born 1967/1968) [1] is an Indian artist and product designer. Born in Jaipur, he has been living and working in New Delhi for the past 25 years. [2] He has worked on several community art projects, the most notable of them being the Sprouts art installation near the AIIMS flyover in New Delhi. [3] [4] [5]

Early life and education

Vibhor Sogani was born in Jaipur, Rajasthan. After completing his schooling, he enrolled at the National Institute of Design in Ahmadabad, where he studied Industrial Design and graduated in 1992. [1]

Career

Sogani started his career with furniture division of Godrej Group in Mumbai designing the brand's executive-chair range in 1992 for almost a year. [4]

He started his own company, ODD (Office of Design & Development), in 1993 after shifting from Mumbai to Delhi. [4]

In August 2002, Sogani launched his Signature Brand of Lifestyle Accessories under the label Studio Vibhor Sogan, [4] and had his first solo design show at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi. Until 2005, he was involved in his accessories line. [4]

In 2006, Sogani designed a 2100 sq.m pavilion for DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organization) at the Defexpo with artist Ajoy David, which won the Best Exhibition Design Award. [6] In 2014, Vibhor Sogani has won the ‘Indian Icon of the Year’ award at Camera, Catwalk, Canvas Singapore. [7] In 2015, Sogani exhibited ‘Mahatma in Me’, a set of stainless steel sculptures, at the Mahatma Mandir Convention Center in Gandhinagar. [5] The sculptures were created as a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. [8] [3] The exhibition then made its way to Zimbabwe [9] and Tanzania in 2017, where it was hosted in several national galleries. [4] [10] Sogani is a member of the Indian Design Council since May 2017. [11]

Artworks

Public art installations

"Sprouts": a 40 feet high installation in the heart of New Delhi. It is spread over 6 acres of greens in an area near Delhi's All India Institute of Medical Sciences. [12] The installation symbolized a nascent nation, growing and ‘sprouting’ after 60 years of independence. [3] [13]

"Kalpavriksha – The Wish Fulfilling Tree": A 35 feet high light art installation, in Arvind Group's Uplands, Ahmedabad. Sited at a 100-feet roundabout, it is the largest public art installation in the state. [14] [15]

"Joy – Larger than life and simple in form, ‘Joy’ is an ode to celebrating all that is beautiful, joy giving and unadulterated in life. Standing 30ft tall, crafted in mirror finished stainless steel spheres, this bouquet of balloons reflect the ever-changing environment around them as the passer by catches a glimpse of themselves in it. Solo exhibitions

Gujarat (2015): He exhibited for the inauguration of "Mahatma Mandir" in Gujrat. [5] [3]

Australia (2016): His exhibition at Australia for Gandhi Jayanti & International Day of Non-Violence by United Nations received international recognition. [17]

Zimbabwe: In August 2017, his exhibition was held at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in Harare which featured 12 artworks in stainless steel. The exhibition was supported by Government of India and the ICCR. [9]

Tanzania: In December 2017, his exhibition traveled to the National Museum in Dar es Salaam of Tanzania. The exhibition was supported by ICCR and the High Commission of India in Tanzania. [10]

Trophy design

Sogani has designed several trophies over the years for national and international events, including: Prime Minister's Award for Excellence 2016, Nexa Excellence Trophy 2016, Prime Minister's award for Best Integrated Steel Plant, Elle Décor Design awards 2014, Samsung Cup (India- Pakistan Cricket Series in Pakistan −2004), Pepsi Cup (India –Pakistan Cricket Series 2005), The PHL Trophy (Premier Hockey League), The Hutch-Delhi Half Marathon, Allianz Cup (Pakistan vs. India Test Series 2006, ONGC-Nehru Football Cup (2007–08). Awards and honours

Sogani was named Best Lighting Designer of the year at the Elle Decor International Design Awards for 2008, 2011, and 2018. [19]

He received the 2006 Best Exhibition Design award at the Defexpo, New Delhi; and the 2015 Platinum Winner, Grand Stand Awards at Acetech, Mumbai.

Kanaiyalal Maneklal Munshi

Kanhaiyalal Maneklal Munshi, popularly known by his pen name Ghanshyam Vyas, was an Indian independence movement activist, politician, writer and educationist from Gujarat state. A lawyer by profession, he later turned to author and politician. He is a well-known name in Gujarati literature. He founded Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, an educational trust, in 1938.

Anjolie Ela Menon Indian artist

Anjolie Ela Menon is one of India's leading contemporary artists. Her paintings are in several major collections, including the NGMA, the Chandigarh Museum and the Peabody Essex Museum. In 2006, her triptych work "Yatra" was acquired by the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, California. Other works also been a part of group exhibitions including 'Kalpana: Figurative Art in India', presented by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) in London's Aicon Gallery in 2009. Her preferred medium is oil on masonite, though she has also worked in other media, including Murano glass, computer graphics and water colour. She is a well known muralist. She was awarded the Padma Shree in 2000. She lives and works in New Delhi.

Prayag Jha Chillar, also known as Prayag Jha, is a contemporary Indian artist, specializing in etching. Her works are in collections all over India, including the National Gallery of Modern Art in Delhi. Jha's work was showcased in solo exhibitions from 1971 to 2012 across Jehangir Art Gallery, Taj Art Gallery, Bajaj Art Gallery and Art Heritage New Delhi. Her work depicts scenes from the ancient Indian epic Meghdoot and is inspired by natural forms such as grass and leaves. Jha's earlier works were primarily monochrome, but have evolved to include strong colors.

Lalita Lajmi is an Indian painter. Lalita is a self-taught artist born into a family involved in the arts, and was very fond of classical dance even as a child. She is the sister of Hindi film director, producer, and actor Guru Dutt. In 1994 she was invited to the Guru Dutt Film Festival, organised by Gopal Krishna Gandhi- Indian High Commission at Nehru Center, London. Her work is also influenced by Indian films such as those made by her brother Guru Dutt, Satyajit Ray and Raj Kapoor.

Rashid Rana is a Pakistani artist. He has been included in numerous exhibitions in Pakistan and abroad with his works in abstractions on canvas, collaborations with a billboard painter, photographic/video performances, collages using found material, photo mosaics, photo sculptures, and large stainless steel works.

Pratiksha Apurv Indian painter

Pratiksha Apurv is an Indian painter, whose work is based on her uncle Osho's teachings. Before moving to painting, she was a successful fashion designer. Apurv won the National Award 2015-16 given by the Lalit Kala Akademi, Ministry of Culture for her painting 'Cosmic Balance', and has exhibited her artwork across the country. Her artwork has featured in books and magazines, and in 2018 she wrote and illustrated her own book, The Mystic and Her Colours.

Jatin Das is an Indian painter, sculptor and muralist. He is counted amongst the most contemporary artists of India.

Haku Vajubhai Shah was an Indian painter, Gandhian, cultural anthropologist and author on folk and tribal art and culture. His art belonged to the Baroda Group and his works are considered in the line of artists who brought themes of folk or tribal art to Indian art.

The National Gandhi Museum or Gandhi Memorial Museum is a museum located in New Delhi, India showcasing the life and principles of Mahatma Gandhi. The museum first opened in Mumbai, shortly after Gandhi was assassinated in 1948. The museum relocated several times before moving to Raj Ghat, New Delhi in 1961.

Mahatma Mandir

Mahatma Mandir is a convention and exhibition centre located at sector 13C, Gandhinagar, Gujarat, India. It is inspired from life and philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi. It is one of the biggest convention centre of India spread over 34 acres.

Bose Krishnamachari

Bose Krishnamachari is an internationally acclaimed Malayali painter and Artist-Curator based in Mumbai, India. He was born in 1963 at Magattukara village near Angamaly, Kerala. He had done his early schooling at GHSS Puliyanam. He took his BFA from Sir J J School of Art, Mumbai in (1991), and then completed his MFA from Goldsmiths College, University of London in(2000). He was a recipient of the award of the Kerala Lalita Kala Akademi(1985), British Council travel award (1993), Mid America Arts Alliance Award(1996), Chales Wallace India Trust Award (1999–2000), Life Time Fellowship Award- Kerala Lalita Kala Academy and was first runner up for the Bose Pacia Prize for Modern Art, New York, 2001. His work comprises vivid abstract paintings, figurative drawings, sculpture, photography, multimedia installations and architecture. Since 1985 he lives and works in Mumbai. Bose is the founder member and President of Kochi Biennale Foundation and Biennale Director of international exhibition of contemporary art, Kochi-Muziris Biennale.

Balan Nambiar

Balan Nambiar is an Indian painter, sculptor, enamellist, photographer and an academic researcher.

Chintan Upadhyay is an Indian artist. He was awarded the Charles Wallace Foundation Award for Residency in Bristol, UK in 2012. He began as a painter, but now creates sculptures and installations, the surfaces of which he paints.

Sadashiv Sathe or Bhau Sathe is an Indian sculptor. His notable works include the 5-metre high statue of Mahatma Gandhi that is part of the main structure of the National Salt Satyagraha Memorial situated at Dandi, Navsari and the 18-foot equestrian statue of Shivaji at the Gateway of India, Mumbai.

Jagadish Chandra Dey, also known as Jagdish Dey, is a renowned Indian Painter and Printmaker, known for his unique style of surrealism, where the real and unreal coexist. He has been a member of many prestigious art societies and juries.
