Steffi Graf was the most successful player at the tournament, winning the singles competition three times and the doubles competition in 1989 partnering American Pam Shriver.

Angelique Widjaja is a retired Chinese Indonesian tennis player. She won the junior championships at Wimbledon in 2001, defeating Dinara Safina. She reached a peak of No. 55 in the WTA singles rankings in March 2003, and a peak of No. 15 in the doubles rankings in February 2004. She retired from the professional circuit in 2008.

The tournament was classified as Tier III in 1988-1989, Tier I in 1990 and Tier II until 1997, and was played on indoor carpet courts.

The 2014 Garanti Koza WTA Tournament of Champions was a singles-only tennis tournament played from October 28 to November 2, 2014, on an indoor hard court. It was won by Andrea Petkovic. For the second year of a two-year deal, the tournament by Turkish construction firm Garanti Koza. This was the sixth edition of the tournament as part of the 2014 WTA Tour as well as the third and last held at Arena Armeec in Sofia, Bulgaria. Defending champion Simona Halep did not take part since she qualified for the 2014 WTA Finals.
