"We Shall Overcome" is a gospel song that is associated heavily with the U.S. civil rights movement. The origins of the song are unclear; it was thought to have descended from "I'll Overcome Some Day," a hymn by Charles Albert Tindley, while the modern version of the song was first said to have been sung by tobacco workers led by Lucille Simmons during the 1945–1946 Charleston Cigar Factory strike in Charleston, South Carolina.

Sanders was provost and interim president of Goddard College (1996–1997) and president of Burlington College (2004–2011). In June 2017, she founded the think tank The Sanders Institute. She has been married to U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders since May 28, 1988. She has also served as the first lady of Burlington, Vermont, during her husband's term as mayor.

In August 2016, Weaver was named president of Our Revolution, a political organization created by Sanders, a position he held until June 2017.
