West Bengal Judicial Academy is a training institution for the Judges of the Indian state of West Bengal and officers of the West Bengal Judicial Service. The institution organises Induction Level Training for newly appointed Judicial Officers as well as entry level District Judges of West Bengal. [2]

History

The Law Commission of India recommended to establish Judicial academies in various state of India for training of all Judges of the subordinate Judiciary. Subsequently, the Supreme Court of India accepted those recommendations and on 28 February Calcutta High Court issued a notification to set up a state Judicial Academy under the name of West Bengal Judicial Academy. [3] On 3 September 2005, the Chief Justice of India Mr. Justice Y.K. Sabharwal inaugurated the Academy in Kolkata. [2] Initially it was started in Bijan Bhawan, Salt Lake but latter transferred to a new campus in Action Area - III of New Town. [4]

Suvra Ghosh is an Indian judge, currently sitting on the Calcutta High Court in West Bengal. She has adjudicated in a number of significant cases, including those concerning the imposition of the death penalty in India, and notably imposed a fine on the Calcutta High Court itself after ruling that the Court had previously erred in ordering a magistrate to retire following alleged misconduct.

Madhumati Mitra is a former judge of the Calcutta High Court, in West Bengal, India. She briefly served as the registrar of the National University of Juridical Sciences as well as of the Calcutta High Court before being appointed as a judge at the High Court. During her tenure as a High Court judge, she adjudicated in a number of significant cases, including in litigation concerning the Saradha Group financial scandal.

Abhijit Gangopadhyay is an Indian judge presently posted in the Calcutta High Court. Gangopadhyay started his career as a West Bengal Civil Service (WBCS) officer. Then he resigned from the position and practiced as a State Advocate in the Calcutta High Court. In the High Court on 2 May 2018, he joined as an additional judge, and on 30 July 2020, he became a permanent judge.
