The 1996 1. divisjon , Norway's second-tier football league, began play on 28 April 1996 and ended on 29 September 1996. The league was contested by 24 teams, divided in two groups and the winner of each group won promotion to Tippeligaen, while the runners-up played a promotion-playoff to win promotion. This was the last season that this league was divided into two groups, so bottom six teams was relegated to 2. divisjon, while the sixth-placed team place a play-off against the winners of the group-winners in the 2. divisjon.

Lyn and Haugesund won promotion to Tippeligaen as group-winners, while Sogndal was promoted after beating Odd in the promotion play-off. Jevnaker, Tromsdalen, Ullern, Elverum, Stålkameratene, Mjøndalen, Fana, Strindheim, Nardo, Vidar, Åsane and Fyllingen was relegated to the Second Division, while Harstad and Byåsen avoided relegation through after winning the playoff.

The 2007 1. divisjon season was a Norwegian second-tier football season. The season began on April 9, 2007 and concluded on November 4, 2007. It was the tenth and final season in which teams competed for two automatic promotion spots and one playoff spot.

The 2010 Tippeligaen was the 65th completed season of top division football in Norway. The competition began on 14 March and ended on 7 November. Rosenborg was the defending champions, having secured their twenty-first league championship in 2009. Haugesund, Hønefoss and Kongsvinger entered as the three promoted teams from the 2009 1. divisjon. They replaced Fredrikstad, Bodø/Glimt and Lyn who were relegated to the 2010 1. divisjon.

The 2010 1. divisjon was a Norwegian second-tier football season. The season began play on 5 April 2010 and ended on 7 November 2010.

The 2011 Tippeligaen was the 66th completed season of top division football in Norway. The competition began on 20 March 2011 and ended on 27 November 2011. Rosenborg were the defending champions, having secured their twenty-second League Championship on 24 October 2010. Sogndal, Sarpsborg 08 and Fredrikstad entered as the three promoted teams from the 2010 1. divisjon. They replaced Hønefoss, Kongsvinger and Sandefjord who were relegated to the 2011 1. divisjon.
