The 2002 Greek local elections elected representatives to Greece's super-prefectures, 54 prefectures, provinces, and approximately 1,033 communities and municipalities.
The local elections in Greece traditionally occur during the month of October.
Candidates at local elections do not run under the official name of the party they belong, but form electoral platforms with different names for the purpose.
Candidates supported by New Democracy won in all the three major municipalities, Athens, Thessaloniki and Piraeus.
Dora Bakoyannis, a prominent member of New Democracy, won the election and replaced Dimitris Avramopoulos as mayor of Athens (first term).

Fofi Gennimata won the mainly ceremonial position of the super-prefect of Athens-Piraeus (first term) supported by PASOK. The coalition supported by New Democracy suffered a setback because of the unpopularity of Ioannis Tzanetakos and because of the candidacy of Georgios Karatzaferis.

Constantine G. Simitis is a Greek retired politician who led the 'Modernization' movement of Greece. He succeeded in leadership Andreas Papandreou, the founder of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK), and served as Prime Minister of Greece from 1996 to 2004.
The Panhellenic Socialist Movement, known mostly by its acronym PASOK, is a social-democratic political party in Greece. Until 2012 it was one of the two major parties in the country, along with New Democracy, its main political rival. In the June 2023 Greek legislative election it once again held firm on to its position of one of the ”big three” political parties of Greece.
The Ecologist Greens are a Greek green political party. They are a member of the European Green Party.
Dimitris Avramopoulos is a Greek politician of the conservative New Democracy party, and former career diplomat. He has served in various high-level cabinet posts, including Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for National Defence, and was Mayor of Athens in 1995–2002. He served as EU Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship in the Juncker Commission between 2014 and 2019.
Manolis Glezos was a Greek left-wing politician, journalist, author, and folk hero, best known for his participation in the World War II resistance.
Nea Alikarnassos is a town and a former municipality in the Heraklion regional unit, Crete, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Heraklion, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 16.1 km2. Population 14,624 (2021). It is located on the north coast of the island and is served by the Nikos Kazantzakis International Airport. In the settlement of Prassas, the Minoan ruins of two houses were found.
Spyridon-Adonis Georgiadis, commonly known as Adonis Georgiadis, is a Greek politician, author, publisher and former telemarketer. Often described as being on the far right of the political spectrum, he currently serves as Vice President of New Democracy and Minister for Health in the Second Cabinet of Kyriakos Mitsotakis. He previously served in the same cabinet as Minister for Labour and Social Security (2023–2024), Minister for Development and Investment in the First Cabinet of Kyriakos Mitsotakis (2019–2023), Minister for Health in the Cabinet of Antonis Samaras (2013–2014) and Deputy Minister for Development, Competitiveness and Shipping in the Cabinet of Lucas Papademos (2011–2012).
A leadership election was held on November 11, 2007 in the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK), Greece's main centre-left party, after it was defeated in the parliamentary election earlier that year. The incumbent, George Papandreou, had stated right after the general elections that he would ask party members to renew their confidence in him, while Evangelos Venizelos and Kostas Skandalidis also declared themselves candidates.

Michalis Chrisochoidis is a Greek politician and member of the Hellenic Parliament for the Athens B2 constituency with New Democracy. He currently serves as Minister for Citizen Protection in the Second Cabinet of Kyriakos Mitsotakis. He previously served in the same role on four separate occasions, as a member of PASOK and an independent politician. He has also served as Minister for the Economy, Competitiveness and Shipping (2010), Minister for Regional Development and Competitiveness (2010–2011), Minister for Development, Competitiveness and Shipping (2011–2012), Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Networks (2013–2015) and Minister for Health (2023–2024).
Christos Papoutsis is a Greek socialist politician who has served as Minister for Citizen Protection (2010–12), Mercantile Marine Minister (2000–01) Member of the European Parliament (1984–95) and European Commissioner for Energy and Euratom Supply Agency, Small business and Tourism (1995–1999). He has also served as the Secretary of the Parliamentary Group and Parliamentary Spokesman for the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK), the majority party in Greece (2009–2010). He also was candidate for Mayor of Athens (2002).
The Ministry of Macedonia and Thrace is a former ministry of Greece. Responsible for the regions of Macedonia and Thrace, since 2015 it has been demoted to the level of a sub-ministry within the Ministry of the Interior. The incumbent Deputy Minister for Macedonia and Thrace is Stavros Kalafatis of New Democracy.
Thessaloniki Alpha is an electoral constituency of the Hellenic Parliament. With an electorate of 531,732 eligible voters (as of 2019) in the urban area of Thessaloniki, Central Macedonia, it elects sixteen members of parliament.
Nikos Androulakis is a Greek politician who serves as president of the PASOK – Movement for Change since 2021. He served also as Member of the European Parliament from 2014 to 2023.
The PASOK – Movement for Change is a political alliance in Greece, which was founded in March 2018, initially as "Movement for Change", mainly affiliated with the centre-left of the political spectrum. It includes the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) and Movement of Democratic Socialists (KIDISO).
Apostolos Katsifaras is a Greek politician with PASOK. From 2004 on, he served as a member of the Hellenic Parliament, and shortly held the post of a deputy minister. Katsifaras served as the Regional Governor of Western Greece from 2011 to 2019.
Fotini "Fofi" Gennimata was a Greek politician who served as president of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) from 2015 to 2021. During her tenure as party leader, she also co-founded and led the Democratic Alignment and the Movement for Change, two successive political alliances of centre-left parties formed around PASOK. She was the daughter of Georgios Gennimatas, a high-profile government minister during the PASOK administrations of the 1980s and 1990s.
Yiannis Charalambous is a Greek lawyer and politician who has served as a Member of Hellenic Parliament and Minister with the PASOK party, as well as Mayor of Nea Ionia.
