The 2010–11 season is Sampdoria's 64th in existence, and eighth consecutive season Serie A. Sampdoria finished the 2009–10 Serie A season in fourth place.

Contents

Sampdoria competed in the UEFA Champions League for the first time since finishing runner-up in 1991–92.

The season was a disastrous one relative to the success of 2009–10, with the club suffering relegation following the January departures of star players Antonio Cassano and Giampaolo Pazzini.

UEFA Champions League

By finishing in fourth position in Serie A, Sampdoria will play in the play-off round of the Champions League. The draw for the play-off round took place on 6 August. Sampdoria were unseeded in the non-Champions route of the draw. They were drawn against four time German champions Werder Bremen. [4]

The first leg, played at Weserstadion in Bremen, was won 3–1 by the home side. Werder Bremen scored all three of their goals in the second half, including a 67th minute penalty from Torsten Frings. The penalty was given after Stefano Lucchini brought down Sebastian Prödl in the area. Lucchini was given a second yellow card for the foul, which led to his sending off. In the last moments of the match, Giampaolo Pazzini gave Sampdoria some hope with an away goal.

The return at Stadio Luigi Ferraris in Genoa saw Sampdoria jump out to an early lead on a pair of Giampaolo Pazzini goals. Antonio Cassano scored a late goal to put Sampdoria ahead 3–0 in the match and ahead 4–3 on aggregate score. In added time, Werder Bremen answered back through Markus Rosenberg to force extra time. In the first half of extra time, Claudio Pizarro scored giving Werder Bremen a 5–4 lead on aggregate. Sampdoria were unable to respond, and they were eliminated from Champions League play.

The 1989–90 Serie A season was another successful year for Napoli, with Diego Maradona being among the leading goalscorers in Serie A, behind Marco van Basten of Milan and Roberto Baggio of Fiorentina. But while Baggio's Fiorentina narrowly avoided relegation, Maradona's Napoli won their second Serie A title in four seasons, while Van Basten helped Milan retain the European Cup as compensation for their failure to win the Serie A title, having finished two points behind Napoli. Demoted to Serie B for 1990–91 were Udinese, Hellas Verona, Cremonese and Ascoli. In Europe, Sampdoria won the Cup Winners Cup and Juventus the UEFA Cup, making this year the most successful in Italian football history.

Associazione Calcio Milan enjoyed perhaps the greatest season in its history, winning three trophies, most memorable for the 4–0 victory against FC Barcelona in the Champions League Final in Athens. That game saw a goal explosion from a Milan side that had been extremely defensive during the entire league season. Milan won Serie A for a third consecutive time with a mere 36 goals scored in 34 games, but conceding only 15, which was largely down to their strong defensive line, with Franco Baresi and Paolo Maldini as key players to thank for their third consecutive domestic success. Milan's match against struggling Reggiana at San Siro on 1 May 1994 came on a day when the sporting world was overshadowed with the death of Formula One racing driver Ayrton Senna in the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix, but the football world was focused on AC Milan's attempts to seal a 13th title. It was a narrow 1–0 defeat by Reggiana, with a goal from Massimiliano Esposito, but mathematically enough to seal the Scudetto by league trophy handover ceremony. This team is widely regarded as one of the best teams of all time.

New signing Adrian Mutu was able to compensate for Luca Toni not having such a spectacular season as the one before, and both players netted 16 goals. Goalkeeper Sébastien Frey also had a top-class season, conceding only 31 goals all year, despite having a defensive line without renowned stoppers.

S.S.C. Napoli won their second ever Italian championship, thanks to a new club record in points scored over the course of the season.
