2012 MLS supplemental draft

The 2012 MLS supplemental draft was a secondary draft that was held by Major League Soccer via conference call on January 17, 2012. [1] The draft was four rounds and all 19 MLS clubs participated.

Changes from 2011

Selection Order

The official selection order was set by Major League Soccer on October 21, 2011:

  1. 2012 expansion team Montreal Impact had the first selection;
  2. The eight clubs which did not qualify for the playoffs received picks #2 through #9 (in reverse order of season points);
  3. The two clubs eliminated in the Wild Card round of playoffs received picks #10 and #11 (in reverse order of season points);
  4. The four clubs eliminated in the Conference Semifinals received picks #12 through #15 (in reverse order of season points);
  5. The two clubs eliminated in the Conference Finals received picks #16 and #17 (in reverse order of season points);
  6. The club which lost the 2011 MLS Cup received pick #18;
  7. The club which won the 2011 MLS Cup received pick #19.

This selection order held for all four rounds of the Supplemental Draft.

  1. #5: Chivas USA → Sporting Kansas City → Chivas USA. 29 November 2011: Chivas USA acquired this first-round selection from Sporting Kansas City in exchange for midfielder Paulo Nagamura. [ref 1] On 21 November 2011, Sporting Kansas City had acquired this selection and a third-round Supplemental Draft selection from Chivas USA in exchange for midfielder Ryan Smith. [ref 2]
  2. #6: San Jose Earthquakes → Real Salt Lake. 1 December 2011: Real Salt Lake acquired this first-round selection from San Jose Earthquakes in exchange for midfielder Jean Alexandre. [ref 3]
  3. #7: D.C. United → Houston Dynamo. 14 August 2009: Houston Dynamo acquired a then third-round SuperDraft selection from D.C. United in exchange for defender Julius James. [ref 4] This pick became a first-round Supplemental Draft pick when MLS shortened the 2012 SuperDraft to two rounds.
  4. #12: New York Red Bulls → Houston Dynamo. 17 December 2010: Houston Dynamo acquired a then third-round SuperDraft selection and the rights to defender Hunter Freeman from New York Red Bulls in exchange for allocation money. [ref 5] The traded pick is New York's natural selection. This pick became a first-round Supplemental Draft pick when MLS shortened the 2012 SuperDraft to two rounds.
  5. #14: Colorado Rapids → Toronto FC. 30 November 2010: Toronto FC acquired a then third-round SuperDraft selection from Colorado Rapids in exchange for midfielder Joseph Nane. [ref 6] The traded pick is Colorado's natural selection. This pick became a first-round Supplemental Draft pick when MLS shortened the 2012 SuperDraft to two rounds.
  6. #15: Seattle Sounders FC → Chicago Fire. 26 August 2011: Chicago Fire acquired a then third-round SuperDraft selection and the #6 position in the MLS allocation order from Seattle Sounders FC in exchange for the #4 position in the MLS allocation order. Seattle then used the #4 allocation position to select forward Sammy Ochoa. [ref 7] This pick became a first-round Supplemental Draft pick when MLS shortened the 2012 SuperDraft to two rounds.

  1. #28: Chicago Fire → Chivas USA. 23 March 2011: Chivas USA acquired a 2012 Supplemental Draft pick, which became this pick, from Chicago Fire in exchange for the rights to defender Yamith Cuesta. [ref 8]
  2. #30: FC Dallas → Chivas USA. 1 April 2011: Chivas USA acquired a then first-round 2012 Supplemental Draft pick from FC Dallas in exchange for the rights to forward Maykel Galindo. [ref 9] This pick became a second-round pick when MLS shortened the 2012 SuperDraft to two rounds.
  3. #33: Colorado Rapids → FC Dallas → Seattle Sounders FC. 15 December 2010: Seattle Sounders FC acquired a then fourth-round SuperDraft selection from FC Dallas in exchange for goalkeeper Chris Seitz. [ref 10] This pick became a second-round Supplemental Draft pick when MLS shortened the 2012 SuperDraft to two rounds. On 30 July 2010, FC Dallas had acquired a conditional 2012 SuperDraft selection, which became this pick, and a fourth-round selection in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft (which was converted to a first-round selection in the 2011 MLS Supplemental Draft) on 30 July 2010 from Colorado Rapids in exchange for defender Anthony Wallace. [ref 11] The conditional 2012 SuperDraft pick became a second-round Supplemental Draft pick when MLS shortened the 2012 SuperDraft to two rounds. [ref 12]
  4. #37: Houston Dynamo → Chivas USA. 21 January 2010: Chivas USA acquired a then fourth-round SuperDraft selection from Houston Dynamo in exchange for midfielder Kevin Harmse. The trade was for a conditional third-round or fourth-round selection. [ref 13] As Harmse was released before playing a game for Houston the pick was fourth-round. This pick became a second-round Supplemental Draft pick when MLS shortened the 2012 SuperDraft to two rounds. [ref 13]

Round 4 Trades

  1. #62: Chivas USA → Los Angeles Galaxy. 17 August 2011: Los Angeles Galaxy acquired a then third-round 2012 Supplemental Draft pick from Chivas USA in exchange for forward Juan Pablo Ángel. [ref 14] This pick became a fourth-round pick when MLS shortened the 2012 SuperDraft to two rounds.
  2. #73: Sporting Kansas City → San Jose Earthquakes. On draft day, San Jose Earthquakes acquired this fourth-round 2012 Supplemental Draft pick from Sporting Kansas City in exchange for the rights to midfielder Michael Thomas. [ref 15]

Note on SuperDraft Trades

MLS reduced the 2012 MLS SuperDraft from three rounds to two rounds on October 21, 2011, which in turn affected trades involving 2012 SuperDraft Round 3 and Round 4 selections. These selections became 2012 Supplemental Draft Round 1 and Round 2 selections.

Following the signature of the first MLS players' union contract, the MLS Superdraft was limited to four rounds. As a result, the Supplemental Draft was re-incarnated to hold the additional rounds. The 2005 MLS supplemental draft, held on February 4, 2005, was the first re-incarnation of the MLS supplemental draft. The four-round event followed January's 2005 MLS SuperDraft, as teams filled out their developmental rosters. Expansion clubs Real Salt Lake and Chivas USA received the first picks in each round.

The draft was followed by the 2006 MLS Supplemental Draft.

In Major League Soccer in the United States and Canada, the 2006 MLS supplemental draft, held on January 26, 2006, followed the 2006 MLS SuperDraft, as teams filled out their developmental rosters.

The 2007 MLS SuperDraft was held in Indianapolis, Indiana on January 12, 2007. It was the eighth annual Major League Soccer SuperDraft. The first selection belonged to expansion team Toronto FC.

The 2007 MLS supplemental draft was held on January 18, 2007, following the SuperDraft, as teams filled out their developmental rosters.

The 2008 MLS SuperDraft took place on January 18, 2008 in Baltimore, Maryland. It was the ninth annual Major League Soccer SuperDraft. The first selection was made by the Kansas City Wizards, after acquiring the selection from the expansion San Jose Earthquakes. It was followed by the Supplemental Draft.

The 2009 MLS SuperDraft took place on January 15, 2009, in St. Louis, Missouri. It was the tenth annual Major League Soccer SuperDraft. The first selection was owned by the expansion Seattle Sounders FC. Unlike previous years, the SuperDraft was not followed by the Supplemental Draft due to roster changes for the 2009 season decreasing the number of developmental spaces.

The 2010 MLS SuperDraft was the eleventh annual SuperDraft presented by Major League Soccer. It was held on January 14, 2010 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, during the 2010 NSCAA Convention. The 2010 SuperDraft consisted of four rounds with sixteen selections each, for a total of 64 players selected during the draft. The draft preceded the 2010 MLS season.

The 2011 MLS SuperDraft was the twelfth annual SuperDraft presented by Major League Soccer. It was held on January 13, 2011 in Baltimore, Maryland, during the 2011 NSCAA Convention at the Baltimore Convention Center. The 2011 SuperDraft consisted of three rounds with eighteen selections each, for a total of 54 players selected during the draft. The draft preceded the 2011 MLS season.

The 2012 MLS SuperDraft was the thirteenth annual SuperDraft presented by Major League Soccer. It was held on January 12, 2012 at 12:00 p.m. (ET). The draft was reduced from three rounds to two with the 19 MLS clubs selecting a total of 38 players. The expansion Montreal Impact had the first overall selection.

The 2011 MLS supplemental draft is a secondary draft that was held by Major League Soccer on January 18, 2011. The draft consisted of three rounds with each of the 18 MLS clubs participating. The return of the Supplemental Draft after a two-year hiatus coincided with the return of the MLS Reserve Division in 2011.

The 2012 Colorado Rapids season was the team's eighteenth year of existence. The team's first match was on March 10 at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2013 MLS SuperDraft</span>

The 2013 MLS SuperDraft was the fourteenth SuperDraft presented by Major League Soccer. The draft took place on January 17, 2013 in Indianapolis, Indiana at the Indiana Convention Center.

The 2013 MLS supplemental draft was a secondary draft that was held by Major League Soccer via conference call on January 22, 2013. The draft was four rounds with all 19 MLS clubs participating.

The 2014 MLS SuperDraft was the fifteenth SuperDraft presented by Major League Soccer. The first two rounds of the four round draft took place on January 16, 2014, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at the Philadelphia Convention Center. Rounds three and four took place on January 21, 2014, via conference call.

The 2015 MLS SuperDraft was the sixteenth SuperDraft conducted by Major League Soccer. The SuperDraft is held each year in conjunction with the annual National Soccer Coaches Association of America convention. The 2015 convention was held January 14–18, 2015 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The first two rounds of the 2017 SuperDraft were held in Los Angeles, California on January 13, 2017, as part of the NSCAA 2017 convention. The 2020 MLS SuperDraft was the 21st edition of the SuperDraft conducted by Major League Soccer. The 2020 SuperDraft was the first SuperDraft held exclusively via conference call and web streaming. The first two rounds of the 2020 SuperDraft were held on January 9, 2020 while rounds three and four were held on January 13, 2020. Previously, the SuperDraft had been held in conjunction with the annual January United Soccer Coaches convention.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2021 MLS SuperDraft</span>

The 2021 MLS SuperDraft was the 22nd edition of the SuperDraft conducted by Major League Soccer. The SuperDraft is held every January prior to the start of the MLS season. The 2020 SuperDraft was the first held exclusively via conference call and web streaming. The Draft was once again held virtually, and began on January 21, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time, and consisted of three rounds. Compensatory picks were conveyed to teams that received fourth-round picks via trades.
