The Emperor's Cup JFA All-Japan Football Championship Tournament, commonly known as The Emperor's Cup or Japan FA Cup, and rebranded as The JFA Emperor's Cup from 2024 onwards, is a Japanese annual football competition. It has the longest tradition of any football match in Japan, dating back to 1921, before the formation of the J.League, current JFL and their predecessor, Japan Soccer League.

The Japanese association football league system is organized in a pyramidal shape similar to football league systems in many other countries around the world. The leagues are bound by the principle of promotion and relegation; however, there are stringent criteria for promotion from the JFL to J3, which demands a club being backed by the town itself including the local government, a community of fans and corporate sponsors rather than a parent company or a corporation.

During the 2007 season, Kashima Antlers competed in the J. League 1, Emperor's Cup and J. League Cup, finishing the season as champions of the first two, whilst they were eliminated from the J. League Cup at the semi-final stage.

During the 2007 season, Urawa Red Diamonds competed in the J. League 1, the top tier of Japanese football, in which they finished as runners-up. The club also competed in two domestic cup competitions, the Emperor's Cup and the J. League Cup, being eliminated in the fourth round of the former, and at the quarter-final stage in the latter competition. The club also competed in the 2007 Japanese Super Cup but lost 4–0 to Gamba Osaka.

The 2013 J.League Division 1 season was the 48th season of Japanese top-flight football and the 21st since the establishment of the J.League in 1992. The season began on 2 March and finished on 7 December.

The 2014 Gamba Osaka season was Gamba Osaka's 21st season in the J.League Division 1 and 27th overall in the Japanese top flight. It also included the 2014 J.League Cup and 2014 Emperor's Cup. The season was one of unparalleled success as it saw them win the treble with an incredible comeback in the second half of the league season which saw them crowned J.League champions following a 0–0 draw away to Tokushima Vortis in December. In addition they added both the J.League Cup and the Emperor's Cup to their trophy cabinet. The feat was made all the more incredible by the fact that Gamba were only promoted back to J.League 1 at the beginning of 2014 following a one-season spell in the Japanese second division.
