The 2016 South American Under-23 Championships in Athletics was the seventh edition of the biennial track and field competition for South American athletes aged under 23 years old, organised by CONSUDATLE. The tournament was held in Lima, Peru at the Villa Deportiva Nacional between 23 and 25 September.

Contents

Brazil was the dominant nation, winning 19 gold medals in its haul of 33. Colombia placed second with eight golds among its 22 medals. Ecuador and Peru were the next most successful nations. Brazilian sprinter Rodrigo do Nascimento was the most successful athlete of the tournament, taking four gold medals across the 100 metres, 200 metres, and relay races. Three other athletes won two individual gold medals, all of them women; Pía Fernández took a middle-distance double for Uruguay, while Claudine Gimenes won a horizontal jumps double and Izabela Rodrigues a shot/discus double for Brazil.

Participation

Nations could enter up to two athletes per event, and one team per relay, with a squad limit of 85 athletes. [2] Venezuela declined to participate as a result of the Venezuelan economic cris. [3]

The 1986 Ibero-American Championships was an athletics competition which was held at the Estadio Pedro Marrero in Havana, Cuba from 27 to 28 September 1986. A total of 36 events, comprising 21 men's and 15 women's events, were contested by sixteen countries. It was the second edition of the Ibero-American Championships, and the first to be held in Latin America. The Chilean city of Valparaíso was initially chosen to host the event, but the competition was moved after organisation difficulties. The 4th South American Under-23 Championships in Athletics were held in Medellín, Colombia, at the Estadio Alfonso Galvis Duque at the Unidad Deportiva Atanasio Girardot on March 20–23, 2010. The championships, organized by CONSUDATLE, were held as a part of the South American Games. A detailed report on the results was given. The most prominent result was achieved in the heat of the women's 100 metres by Ana Cláudia Lemos Silva. Her time of 11.17 equaled the South American and Brazilian record, and set a new championships and games record.

The 2013 Pan American Junior Championships was held at the Estadio Alfonso Galvis Duque in Medellín, Colombia, from 23 to 25 August. The competition was originally scheduled for 2–4 August in Lima, Peru. Lima was ruled out as the host and the dates were also amended in April, due to the clash with the 2013 World Games in Cali and its proximity to the 2013 World Championships in Athletics.

The 2015 South American Championships in Athletics was the 49th edition of the biennial athletics competition between South American nations. The event was held in the Peruvian capital of Lima from 12 to 14 June at the Videna Stadium. It was the eighth time Lima hosted the event, having last done so for the 2009 edition. A total of 44 events were held, evenly divided between the sexes, continuing with the event programme established in 2001.

Athletics, for the 2017 Bolivarian Games, took place at the Bureche Athletics Stadium in Santa Marta, Colombia from 21 to 25 November. A total of 47 events were contested, divided between the sexes bar the men's 50 kilometres walk.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">South American University Athletics Championships</span> International athletics championship event

The South American University Athletics Championships was an international athletics competition for student athletes from South American countries. It was staged on one occasion in May 2005 at the Estadio Modelo Alberto Spencer Herrera in Guayaquil, Ecuador. Four nations competed: Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. A total of 42 athletics events were contested, 22 by men and 20 by women. Women did not compete in the pole vault, 3000 metres steeplechase or half marathon, while the men did not compete in a combined track and field event. The host nation topped the medal table, winning 22 events and a total of 55 medals. Peru were runners-up with eleven gold medals, while Chile and Colombia finished with six and three gold medals, respectively.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Athletics at the 2022 South American Games</span> Athletics competitions at the 2022 South American Games

Athletics competitions at the 2022 South American Games in Asunción, Paraguay will be held from 12 to 15 October 2022 at the Athletics National Center in the Parque Olímpico cluster in Luque, a sub-venue outside Asunción, with the marathon and 35 km racewalks being held at Costanera José Asunción Flores.
